Using self-hypnosis for labour and birth has become more popular in recent months. Some NHS hospitals are now offering Natal Hypnotherapy as part of their antenatal education whilst others are commissioning research into the benefits of self-hypnosis for labour. According to the media, the Duchess of Cambridge is preparing to use self-hypnosis during her labour and even Kim Kardashian used self-hypnosis to lessen her anxiety during her recent pregnancy.

The ideal condition for pregnancy and birth is for a mother (and father!) to feel calm and relaxed as they prepare to meet their baby. This is not always easy to achieve and many parents approach labour with apprehension. Friends stories and television programmes about birth can make it seem dangerous, terrifying and impossible without medical intervention. Fear and tension in the body or the mind during labour can interfere with the delicate process of birth, increasing pain and stress and leading to a greater need for medical intervention.

Natal Hypnotherapy can provide parents with the tools to be able to manage any fears and to view birth in a positive way. The techniques of deep

tsrelaxation, breathing and guided visualisation enable mothers to labour and birth without fear and can be used whatever sort of birth is planned. Parents often report that their babies are calm after birth, which is a reflection of their parents state of mind.

Anyone can learn the simple relaxation techniques which can be used during times of stress to return calm and relaxation to body and mind. If you are feeling any tension then try this simple exercise:

Take a moment and stop what ever you are doing. Ideally keep your feet on the floor and close your eyes. Take a full breath, filling your lungs until full, pause for a moment and then breathe out, exhaling completely like a sigh and let your shoulders drop. In your mind count to six, as you breathe out (do not worry if you struggle with this, count to three instead - it is not a competition). This will slow down your breathing making you feel instantly calmer.

GO4GOALS is an organisation aimed at developing young childrens football skills throughout Warwickshire and West Midlands. Coaching will be provided for all levels, the children will develop technically and improve their social skills for later in life.

GO4GOALS football sessions cover the following age groups;
