WelcomeIt’s hard to believe I have been here at the JCC just over half a year. In just this brief time our board and staff have made amazing progress on a number of new initiatives and improvements that will start to unfurl over the coming year.

Our JCC is an incredible institution and we are always striving to make it more relevant to our members and the community. To this end we conduct a yearly benchmarking survey to get feedback from you about our services and programs. I want to personally thank all of you who participated in this survey this past fall. You should know that we take your feedback very seriously.

Some of the big changes you will start to see as a result of this survey is an increased focus on member and guest services – specifically in the area of hospitality and facility upgrades.

We will soon be saying goodbye to our “checkpoint” and “front desks” in their current format as they become transformed into interactive service centers for members and guests.

Our facilities are in the process of being upgraded so that we can provide our members and guests with a more vibrant, welcoming and state-of-the-art experience. You may have already noticed the new paint colors and cardio machines in our fitness centers. Stay tuned there is more to come!

As we move into the summer and fall you will start to see new program offerings especially in the area of arts

& culture and youth. In just a few weeks the Shapiro Rec Park will open with exciting plans for ongoing family activities throughout the summer.

All of these changes are our way of telling you how much we value your membership. We want to be here for you and your family at every stage in your life – whether you’re here to work out, take a swim lesson, attend Kids Center, participate in JCC Maccabi, create a work of art in one our many enrichment classes, or all of the above. We want to be your center!

We also want you to know that because of your membership, and the support of THE ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, our JCC has the incredible opportunity to do great things for our community including supporting the frail elderly, teens at risk, and children and adults with disabilities.

I want you to remember that we are always open to your feedback and ideas. Feel free to contact me at any time at [email protected] or call 410.559.3502, or you can make suggestions at our Member Services centers. We look forward to hearing from you.

Fondly,Barak

Fitness & Sports Events

If you missed former University of Maryland’s all time leading

scorer Juan Dixon during his visit to the JCC back in March, not

to worry…he’s coming back. This time for a full day basketball

clinic in June designed for kids ages 4-16 (separated by age

and ability.)

Born and raised in Baltimore, Dixon is not only an NCAA

National Basketball Champion but also a successful NBA player

who retired recently after 10 years because of a knee injury.

Dixon is excited to be working with kids again, encouraging

them to work hard and believe in themselves. His workshop will

blend basketball training, including unique stations, footwork,

shooting, and skills with games and competition, in a fun and

energetic environment. Dixon and his team of elite coaches will

also cover performance training strategy and speed and agility

training. There will also be time during the day for Dixon to

speak to the participants as a group.

“This year’s partnership with Juan Dixon and his basketball

camp is just the beginning of our soon to be revamped sports

camp program that is already starting to focus on a Junior

Varsity and Varsity program for age appropriate campers for this

summer. Next summer we will be expanding our program to

include two weeks of Premier Basketball Camp as well as other

specialized sports camps that will be available on a weekly

basis. We believe that this will take our camps to a new level.

Explains Roman Gerstovich, JCC Sports Camp Director and

Sports League Coordinator.

Workshop fee: $110/child (includes t-shirt & lunch of pizza, salad, apple & a beverage). To sign up call: 410.988.3583 or

Swimming Lesson PolicySometimes the pool becomes unavailable for swimming lessons due to circumstances beyond our control. If the pool is unavailable for swimming lessons due to inclement weather or health & safety related issues; our instructors will conduct a land-based session including either water safety and/or land-based stroke drills at the instructor’s discretion. Make-up lessons will not be scheduled if a water session needs to be missed for one of these reasons. The JCC does not provide refunds for missed water sessions.

Early Childhood EducationThe Benefits of Family Style Dining Featuring the Stoler Early Childhood Education Center

Family Style Dining is one of the newest trends in the fight against childhood obesity. It has been found to be especially effective with young children when they are presented with healthy food offerings paired with the opportunity to serve themselves. It is a tactic that Christine Sigman, RN. Director of Healthy Choices Programming at the Stoler ECE in Owings Mills, has implemented as part of the school’s Healthy Choices initiative.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recently reported on the success of our ECE’s family dining effort, sharing our story with over 11, 500 preschools and childcare centers across the country.

Sigman explains that, “In the process of serving themselves, children learn fine motor skills as they pass bowls and use tongs.” Of course child-sized tongs, utensils and bowls are necessary for smaller hands and consequently allow children to feel confident in serving themselves. The sense of taking responsibility for their meal time is one more step toward a sense of independence for preschoolers.

Another aspect of family style dining is the idea of children waiting for each other to take their individual servings, which encourages patience and embraces sharing. If parents decide to use the idea at home, this is the perfect time to discuss their day as they take time to learn how to use the utensils.

Sigman also says that “children learn to take what they feel they’re hungry for and gauge how much food they need on their plates.” If you try this at home, encourage children to try new foods by putting small amounts on their plates to taste. They can always take more if they like it. Try to encourage a well-rounded sampling of each dish in the process. Don’t force them to eat what they don’t like, but encourage them to at least try what they don’t like from time to time as children’s tastes evolve. And be sure to have lots of paper towels and a smile on hand for the inevitable spills.

Healthy Choices is a program developed by the Stoler Early Childhood Education center housed in the Owings Mills JCC. It was one of twelve preschool programs nationwide recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity initiative, Let’s Move! Childcare Challenge. The curriculum encourages kids to move more and eat lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy protein. As part of Healthy Choices, all snacks and meals at the preschool are served in this family style dining format.

If you’d like to learn more about this program for your child or grandchild please schedule a tour with Ilene Meister at 410.559.3554.

Award Winning Healthy Choices Program in Owings MillsOur students learn about “sometimes” foods and “anytime” foods by following the new Food Plate. They also learn about portions, vitamins, minerals and the benefits of physical activity. By eating together as a group, family-style, children take charge of how much and what they eat. They are encouraged to recognize when they are hungry and when they are full. With daily activities and lessons focused on eating right and getting exercise our students are learning wellness skills that will empower them to make healthy choices throughout their life.
