Dear DIC partners,

I perfectly remember when, nine years ago, Wilson Mathias Júnior, M.D. came to me, taken by a feeling of joy, pride and emotion, to tell he had gained, from the President of the International Society of Cardiovascular Ultrasound (ISCU), Prof. Navin Nanda M.D., the possibility to bring to our country, specifically to the city of São Paulo, the XVII World Congress of Echocardiography and related techniques. We never imagined, by that time, that the dear Echocardiography Department would become the Cardiovascular Image Department of SBC. Holding, at that time, the office of Financial Director for Depeco, I immediately notified the President, Carlos Eduardo Suaide Silva, M.D. who, after being excited, did not hesitate to say that we could never lose such excellent opportunity to disclose to the world what we had of best in our country. We led the proposal to the Department’s ordinary meeting which, not only accepted such challenge but also unanimously approved the name of Wilson Mathias, M.D. to chair it. I say it is challenge because we were in the middle of a financial crisis and it would not be an easy task to host such a great event.

These years went by really fast. Our Department got financially stable, grew in all aspects and suffered deep changes, becoming the “house” of all image techniques in cardiology. Currently, we are a strong, cohesive Department and, therefore, we are able to meet such achievement. For nearly one year from the beginning of such an extraordinary event, we had the first big challenge: choosing a team ready to transform into reality all our aspirations. We looked for colleagues who were able to join the wisdom of expertise to the impulse and strength of the youth and we got to the name of Jeane Mike Tsutsui, M.D. to chair the scientific commission. Such a great congress required an applicable scientific structure and thus we chose to divide its scientific elaboration into the most different areas. To direct the large acquired echocardiography area, we chose Rodrigo Bellio Mattos Barretto, M.D. and to arrange the echocardiography area in the congenital cardiopathies, Estela Suzana Kleiman Horowitz M.D. The mission of leading the vascular echocardiography stayed with Mônica Luiza de Alcântara, M.D. while the image area was commanded by Ibraim Masciiarelli Francisco Pinto, M.D., Carlos Eduardo Rochite, M.D. and João Vicente Vítola, M.D. Ultimately, we assigned to Valdir Ambrósio Moisés, M.D. the task to head the clinical module, one of the large attractions of the congress.

The numbers of such great scientific meeting in cardiovascular image impressed even those who are most used to attend international congresses of the area. Nothing less than 258 colleagues were invited to take part as lecturers. Out of them, 50 are international guests, being 8 from South America and the remaining ones from the other continents of the planet. We hope to receive nothing less than 1.500 congressmen who shall have at their disposal six auditoriums which shall work simultaneously, allowing for everyone to have a broad choice within what’s new in the area desired, in addition to three rooms exclusively intended to the Tutorials, a traditional activity in our events. Virtually 200 scientific essays were sent to the decision board, coordinated by David Costa de Souza Le Bihan, M.D., Ana Cristina Camarosano, M.D. and André Schmidt, M.D. Out of them, 152 were chosen for the oral presentation, poster or commented poster.

It is worth stressing that our task of arranging the World Congress would had been much worse if we did not have the significant participation of the echocardiography equipment companies and the other Department partners. Such useful partnership which injects resources to DIC, allows for us to holding events according to the requirements of our partners, the actual “owners” of the Congress and, to the companies, sell their products as they wouldn’t in any other event.

We should not fail to stress that, for the first time in history, whether of the former Depeco or the recently created DIC, a Congress was created jointly by two Boards. Such understanding between the colleagues who left and those that now manage our Department was harmonious and essential so that the event organization would not suffer any type of interruption. Although some failures may become evident, some mistakes may be seen, I am fully certain that those who dedicated to the Congress, from the Department employees to the colleagues in charge of the scientific area and of the organization did not fail to strive. Everyone dedicated intensely, abdicating from times of leisure and rest so that the partners may have a Congress with the highest quality, similar to the Cardiovascular Image Department of SBC.Finally, we hope all congressmen take advantage of such meeting as best as possible and, that they bring at the end of the event, the best remembrances, of that which may be a real landmark in the history of imaging of our country.

It gives us a great pleasure to welcome you for the XVII World Congress of Echocardiography and 2nd Congress of the Cardiovascular Imaging Department of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology. This meeting will be a three day meeting with intensive academic activity of echocardiography and cardiovascular imaging. It has been made possible because of the overwhelming response of highly reputed faculty, both from abroad and from Brazil. More than 50 highly reputed international faculties have already confirmed their participation. They will be discussing various aspects of cardiovascular imaging, including recent advances in diagnosis, prognosis and its implications for therapy. Cardiovascular imaging has now evolved as a fully integrated technology in a patient workup right from diagnosis to therapeutic decision making. In this meeting, the cardiovascular imaging module faculty will be absolutely dedicated in discussing the use of integrated imaging modalities. The clinical module is specifically designed to promote a thorough merge between clinicians and imagenologists as the vascular module will work integrated with the adult echo and clinical module, in special, in sessions dealing with coronary disease.The pediatric echocardiography module will discuss deeply innovations in the area of pediatric, intra - operative and Fetal echo, not to mention the traditional and very interesting case study sessions.

As such, in this congress a very informative scientific program, offering a comprehensive and innovative set of educational sessions, has been designed in concordance with the growing demands of the various disciplines of echocardiography. This hopefully, will be achieved by the planned symposia, case studies, tutorial workshops and meeting with the expert’s sessions.However, the success of any conference depends upon the participating delegates. As such, I take this opportunity to invite you to join us in this endeavor.We hope, besides enjoying the scientific sessions, you will enjoy São Paulo for its finest museums, shopper’s paradise, courtly grace and exquisite cuisine besides being the main air travel hub for Rio de Janeiro, Iguaçu Falls, Amazon, Northeast states beaches among other Brazilian paradises.We look forward to welcoming you for an exciting and unforgettable World Class Congress.
