Sullivan University students have access to four Proquest® databases.

The ProQuest Databases: What are They?

“This is the quintessential accountant's database. It brings together highly ranked global and scholarly journals with key resources for locating quick and precise results covering current news and topics, as well as the trends and history influencing important accounting and tax issues of the day.” (http://search.proquest.com/accounting?accountid=14142)

Accounting and Tax – What is it?

“This database provides full-text articles for over 210 publications of the alternative and independent presses, from 1970 to current.” (http://search.proquest.com/altpresswatch?accountid=14142)

Alt-Press Watch – What is it?

“ProQuest Career & Technical Education is the definitive source for vocational information. The database includes nearly 600 titles, with more than 500 available in full text for quick access to research on virtually any technical topic.” (http://search.proquest.com/career?accountid=14142)

Career and Technical Education – What is it?

“This database is the world's most comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses from around the world, spanning from 1861 to the present day and offering full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997.” (http://search.proquest.com/pqdtft?accountid=14142)

Go to http://library.sullivan.edu (You can access this site through the student portal under Campus Resources)

Select Articles and E-Books in the left navigation.

Read the login instructions. Select Click here to login to databases and

log in as needed. Select ProQuest from the list of popular

databases.

How to get to the ProQuest databases

Searching ProQuestThe Basic Search screen will appear. At this point you are searching in Multiple Databases (all of the databases) .

To access ONLY one of the Databases:◦ Click the 4 databases link. ◦ A listing of the available databases will appear.

◦ Click on the database that you would like to search.

◦ OR: To search more than one database but not all of the databases, check the checkboxes next to your chosen databases.

The Search Methods are at the top of the ProQuest screen. These indicate different ways in which the databases can be searched.

Click the name of the type of search you’ll be performing.

The Basic Search method allows you to search by entering a word, words or specific phrase in the search box.

Capitalization does not matter in a search. MICHAEL JORDAN, Michael Jordan, or

michael jordan will all find the same results.

There are several steps to performing Basic Search. 1. Enter one or more words in the search box. 2. Check the box next to Full text if you want to

retrieve only complete articles. 3. Check the box next to Peer Reviewed if you

want to retrieve only peer-reviewed journals.

The format in which the article can be viewed will be listed underneath the citation to the article. If there is no listing underneath the citation, only the abstract and citation are available.

Full Text: The complete text to the article is available.

Citation/Abstract: Only a citation and a brief summary of the article is available.

Text+Graphics: The article is available in full text form. Any graphics or pictures are also available.

Full Text - PDF: The article is available in a scanned format. Adobe Acrobat software must be installed in order to view the article.

Preview - PDF: An excerpt of the article is available in a scanned format.

Searching ProQuest – Basic Search

During a search, you can use truncation operators (also known as wildcards).

A question mark can be used to search for a specific number of letters. For example, wom?n can be used to find woman or women.

An asterisk is used to search for words with a common word root. For example, child* finds child, children, childish, childhood, etc.

1. Type a word or phrase in the first entry box.

2. Use the pull-down menu to click on a search field.

3. Use the pull-down menu to select a Logical Operator (or accept the default AND).

4. Type a second word or phrase.

5. Choose limiters and select other search options as needed.

6. Finally…click Search!

The Publication search can be used to find a particular issue of a magazine or journal.

Click on the Publication link located near the top of the screen.

Type in the complete title of a publication or just a word that may be in the title. For example, you can type in the word Food. Then click Search.

Once you have entered a search, a listing of publication titles containing the word(s) will appear.

Click on the title that interests you.

Click the issue you wish to view. A listing of available articles will appear.

You can also choose to search within the publication by clicking the Search Within Publication tab located near the top of the publication results page.
