Principal's News

Dear parents and carers, ensuring that all students and staff at our school are safe, supported and respected is always our highest priority.

If you read my previous email, you will be aware that a person was escorted off the school premises on Friday morning at about 8:55am. This is now a Police matter. Thanks to a quick response by staff and parents, any risk to children was removed.

I strongly recommend that you discuss safety messages with your child at home. For example:

• Make sure your parents are aware of where you are at all times.• Always walk straight home. Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths

where there are a lot of other people.• Don’t talk to people you don’t know and never get into a car with someone you

don’t know. If a car stops on the side of the road and you don’t know the person inside, do not stop.

• If you are scared and can use a phone, call Triple Zero (000) and tell them you are scared.

Coincidentally, last Friday was Day for Daniel, an initiative from the Daniel Morecombe Foundation. Teachers had already prepared lessons linked to this program but after

the incident, I asked all teachers to reinforce the importance to students of Stranger Danger.

I have provided resources below that can help parents.

The video from NSW Police Protect your children - Safe People, Safe Places is very useful resource for parents. The booklet Keeping Me Safe aims to help children identify the safe adults in their community, as well as safe places to go when they are lost, feeling unsafe or frightened or are in danger.

I trust these resources are helpful.Any queries on this matter can be directed through the office.

Other goals include enabling children to develop their own personal safety strategies, to respect their bodies and their personal space, to feel empowered with the ability to say NO and seek help when they feel unsafe or unsure, and to have the confidence to tell a trusted adult if they are being harmed in any way.

Grandparents Day



Thank you to everyone for joining us to celebrate Grandparents Day last Thursday. In particular, thank you to K/1R and Ms. Horton for a spectacular program.

There so many highlights, in particular, the students of K/1R who were wonderful hosts. The video interviews with their own grandparents in our new Green Room were very enjoyable. The K-2 student audience was also outstanding.

Aunty Fay's speech about respect for elders was a very well-received message. The entertainment provided by BBPS Violin Ensemble, School Choir, Recorder Ensemble, Sand Skippers and Junior Dance Ensemble were also very popular. The Year 6 Cake stall, classroom tours and the Library Book Fair were a great success.

Some grandparents came from far away including flying in from New York on Thursday morning, just in time for the big day. These events are a team effort. Thank you for the wonderful feedback phone calls and emails.

BBPS Boundary ChangesA hard copy of the new boundary changes will be available in the office for your viewing from the beginning of next term. Sibling rights and a sunset clause for those living within these boundary changes are now in place. All 2018 Kindergarten enrolments will also be accepted if their current address falls within these boundary changes. There will be further discussions at the next P&C meeting.

CONGRATULATIONS to our BBPS filmmaker Ayla (4C) for being a finalist in the Bloodfest Kids Horror Film Competition she entered.

She plays the starring role in her film, entitled '3AM' which was 1 of 8 finalists selected out of 50 entries!

We have just realised we have a clash with the Melbourne Cup on 7 Nov. Consequently, the date is now changed to the following week, being Tuesday the 14th Nov at 7pm and we’ll send around an agenda well beforehand to try to lure people there. Apologies if this causes any schedule clashes for anyone.

Term 4 – Tue 14 Nov at 7pm - 8.30pm in the staffroomStrict finishing time. We shall circulate an agenda ahead of time so you can see if there’s anything that may interest you to come along. All Welcome!

P&C NewsJust a quick wrap on the kids disco night. Thanks to the almost 50 parents that helped out in some capacity on the night. Wrangling the kids back into the hall was a full-time job for the security detail and I’ve never felt more like my parents while barking at the kids to “get back inside.”

An enormous thank you to Jo Schaeffer for being a one woman wonder and pulling off the impossible. All our volunteers were amazing and high spirited and endlessly gracious with their time and whilst I don’t want to single anyone out, there must be a special thanks to Nicky in the canteen, Eve on punch duty and Will in the hall. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

We had around 500 kids out of a school of 650 and I thought my son looked best in vintage Richard Simmons. We raised around $5k on the night on the top of it being a huge amount of fun. And Jo, once again, thank you.

The next fundraiser requires you to only eat, so please get on and order your boxes of mangoes on-line on the QKR app. See below.

P&C - Mango Fundraiser

Summer is coming, and so is the long anticipated Mango Season…. Nothing says summer more than fresh, ripe mangos.

The final fundraiser for Bondi Beach Public School for 2017 is The Mango



Fundraiser. This has been successfully running for many years at other organisations with delicious mangos coming direct from the Orchard in Bowen, Queensland to you at school – completely bypassing the supermarket. You can’t get much fresher than that.

Trays of Bowen Mangos (previously known as Kensington Pride Mangos) will be available for $29.00 per tray, and will be delivered to Bondi Beach Public School during the last week of November (exact date will be confirmed in mid November). You will be able to collect your tray (or trays…!) of Mangos from school and take them home to be demolished the day they are delivered to ensure maximum freshness.

The trays will hold between 12 large mangos up to 23 smaller mangos – depending on size of the fruit on the trees.

This is an exceptional opportunity to enjoy the freshest of mangos delivered directly to school. They could make an amazing early Christmas present (or just the best fruit to eat during the week!) and will also support the P&C raise much needed funds.

Ask your family, friends and neighbours if they would like a tray/s. Orders can be made via QKR from now until Friday, 27, October 2017. No late orders will be accepted. If you do not have access to QKR, either download the app for free or chat to a friend about ordering through their account.

Year 5 - Intention to apply for 2019 Yr 7 Selective High School

Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 15 March 2018.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2019, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from 10 October 2017 in a printed application information booklet from your child's classroom and at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.

and- opportunity-classes/year-7 on 10 October 2017 and closes on 13 November 2017. You must apply before the closing date.

There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access or require assistance, please see your child's teacher or Mrs Shehadie for assistance after 10 October 2017.

Lovely news - staff member Billy has just welcomed his first baby into the world. A beautiful daughter called Tabitha. Congratulations Billy!

Our new Netball Club is proving very popular. Thumbs up to educators Nick & Charlie for introducing this great club and keeping the kids active and happy.

It's getting hot now. The Hive is aligned with the school policy of NO HAT NO PLAY. Please, kids: remember your hats!!!

OPAL Card - Bus Passes

Applications for 2018 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) and Term Bus Pass (TBP) travel entitlements are now open.

In coming days students who hold an SSTS entitlement and are changing grade bands i.e. going from year 2 to 3 or year 6 to 7 and changing school, and students whose entitlement was approved under a medical condition, will receive notification by email or post informing them of the pending expiry of their entitlement. TBP holders will also receive notification.

Students enquiring about pending cancellation should be advised to go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails to update details/make application for next year’s entitlement.

Application needs to be made before 31 December 2017 to ensure their entitlement is updated and their current card is not cancelled. If application is made after the expiry of their entitlement (31 December) the system will automatically cancel their card and a new one will need to be issued.

Please note: Students who are changing grade band and are remaining at the same school will not receive notification and do not need to reapply (the system now automatically validates a student’s on-going eligibility if at the same school and going from infants to primary or primary to secondary). Where a student meets the new eligibility the system will automatically update their entitlement and card.

Free Effective Parenting Mondays from November 13 - 11 December 6:00pm - 8:00pm

This five week course is facilitated by experienced clinicians specializing in adolescent development and behavior. The course will assist parents to build stronger parent-child relationships and better manage and understand their adolescent’s behavior. This is a skills building and educational program only. Bondia moment to yourself at Parida Enjoy



Bondi Splash N Dash is a major fundraising event for WAYS.Since 2014, Andrew Reid (ex WAYS client, Lifeguard and Bondi Rescue star) has held this event at Bondi Beach and raised $20,400 much-needed funds for WAYS.

This year Bondi Splash n Dash will be held on Saturday, November 18 and WAYS is asking for help with volunteers and 10 prizes for raffles. Raffles will be sold on the day at the presentation of the awards held at North Bondi RSL at 11am.

The hours of volunteering start and finish early - 5:30 am - 11 am.



It really is a fun day at the beach. Volunteers are mainly required for marshalling, setting up, giving out drinks, looking after bags, registration of participants to check in etc, and - even better on a lovely day - standing on the golden sands of Bondi Beach is a nice way to start the day.

We need a minimum of 10 people who can start at 5:30 am then everyone else by 7:00 am. A full shift is not necessary but if you can do one - perfect!
