motorbikes zooming around in a ‘Well of Death’ , while a few steps away people

were buying and selling camels – an older mode of transport.

POEM- THE SOLITARY REAPER

The Summary

‘The Solitary Reaper’ is a beautiful description of the poet’s personal experience. Once,

while passing through the hills of Scotland, a melodious song catches his attention. He

sees a young girl reaping and binding grain in a field. She is all alone and is singing a sad

song. The poet stops there to listen to her song. He makes no noise so that she is not be

disturbed.

The poet finds the song very enchanting and melodious. The entire valley is flooded with

her beautiful voice. The song is sweeter than the song of a cuckoo or a nightingale. The

poet then says that no nightingale could have sung so sweetly to welcome and soothe the

tired travellers of the Arabian deserts as the solitary reaper. Her song is sweeter than the

song of the cuckoo bird that disturbs the seas’ silence in the distant islands.

The poet cannot understand the theme of this reaper’s song as the dialect is quite

unfamiliar to him. So, he makes some guesses. Perhaps, she is singing about some

tragic event of the past or some familiar event of her life, like the loss of parting from the

dear ones. It could have been about some battles that were fought long ago.

Then the poet moves on to say that whatever is the theme of the song, the music of her

song and the melodious voice leaves the poet spellbound. He stands motionless to listen

to the girl’s song. It seemed as if the song was never ending. The poet listens to her as

she reaps and binds the grains bending over the sickle. Then the poet goes up the hill but

he carries the music of the melodious song with him. The song leaves an everlasting

impression on his mind and haunts him for long.

POEM

THE SOLITARY REAPER - William Wordsworth

(Question & Answer)

1. What was the reaper doing when the speaker first saw her?

Ans. The speaker was cutting and binding stalks of grain in field. She was singing a

sad yet melodious song to herself while working.

2. Why does the speaker seem unsure about whether he wants to stay or move

on?

Ans. The speaker seems to be unsure about whether he wants to stay or move on

because he is enraptured by the beauty of the reaper’s song. She sings without being

conscious of any audience around her.

3. Why does the speaker compare the reaper’s song to that of a nightingale and

the cuckoo?

Ans. The speaker becomes completely captivated by the reaper’s song. He compares

her song to the calm and soothing notes of a nightingale’s song which relieves the

weariness of the travelers in the Arabian deserts. Her song echoes in the valley like

the song of the of the cuckoo whose song shatters the silence of the seas in the

remote areas. He feels that the reaper’s song is as beautiful and melodious as the

songs of the nightingale and the cuckoo.

4. Why is the speaker not sure about the theme of the song? What are the

alternatives he suggests?

Ans. The speaker is not sure about the reaper’s song because he is not familiar with

the language she was singing in. He imagines that the song could be about sad or

unfortunate distant events or about ancient battles. The song could also be about the

reaper’s pain sorrow or loss from which she is suffering at present.

POEM

THE SOLITARY REAPER - William Wordsworth(Cont’d)

I listened, motionless and still;

And,as I mounted up the hill,

The music in my heart I bore,

Long after it was heard no

more.

1. How did the speaker feel as he walk away from the scene?

Ans. The tune and music of the song stayed with him long after he had left the field.

The speaker says he carried the song in his heart even as he climbed the hill till he

could hear it no more.

2. Did the song affect the narrator greatly?

Ans. Yes the song affected the speaker greatly. In spite of not being familiar with the

language the reaper was singing in, he was deeply affected by the beauty of the

song’s tune and melody.

3. Write the rhyming scheme of the above stanza.

Ans. aa,bb

4. What is this poem about?

Ans. In this poem the poet describes an incident when, on one day of his walks in

Scotland, he came across a Highland girl singing melodiously as she cut and bound

the grain in the field. He tries to understand what she is singing about but the tune

affects him so deeply that he carries the music in his heart long after he has left the

scene.
