The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.
The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each financial year, due after the yearly AGM. Fees for the 2010/2011 year are currently:
Interstate: $90 (Seniors card - $85) ● Single: $100 (Seniors card - $90) Joint/family: $105 - (Seniors card - $90)

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Welcome to the new club year. Last year I was not sure if I would make it back as president for another year, being ready to hand it on. This time around I am not as surprised, given the unusually low attendance at the recent AGM. The low attendance, while unavoidable, nearly made the AGM a non-event, with it being a real struggle to achieve a quorum on the night.
Due to a number of regular attendees being absent, we really did make it through the AGM proceedings by the skin of our teeth. I am glad to say that we completed the general and annual meetings without too much drama and even got a committee elected in the process. Thanks to Martin for acting as secretary for the night, due to Peter’s absence, and also to Cynthia for chairing the committee elections, again.
There has been little change in the committee, except for the addition of Dale, the resignation of Dave and the return of Bev, albeit briefly. On the night, Bev offered to come back onto the committee, but we have since been advised that we can have only two ordinary members, not the four elected. As a result she has agreed to again step down from the committee. This still leaves us with three ordinary members so Jessica has offered to take up the role of trip and social officer, subject to ratification at the next club meeting.
I am sure that Jessica will take up this position with the same enthusiasm she has shown since she joined the club so please come along to the next meeting and show your support for her. I am pleased to welcome Dale onto the committee and look forward to his knowledge of outback travel being of great value as we consider travelling further afield in the coming year. Already, Dale has provided some valuable input to our committee planning day, held recently at our farm at Woodside North in Gippsland. Details from that meeting will be shared over the coming weeks. [See notes on p25 - Ed.]
Dave has finally given up his position on the committee and will now hopefully have more time for the family and for keeping his Outback on the road. The later seems to be the bigger effort given some of the dramas Dave has experienced with the Outback recently. I cannot remember the last time that Dave was not on the committee as he was already there when I came on five years ago. It was then that Dave was busily preparing for the 30
th birthday
celebration. With the 35th birthday approaching maybe Dave thought it was a
good time to leave the committee, knowing the work involved in planning such an event. Thanks Dave for all your contributions.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
While we survived the past year without a venue officer it is becoming increasingly difficult to operate without one. I am sure that none of you want to see the club abandon its monthly general meetings however it is almost impossible to organize items of interest for the general meeting when there is no-one dedicated to doing so. This role is an important one of both coordination and facilitation and one that we really need to fill as soon as possible. Please see me if you are interested in helping with this very important position.
As I mentioned earlier, the club’s 35th birthday is coming up, very soon in fact.
We have earmarked the weekend of October 15th for our celebration of this
very noteworthy event. The club will be celebrating with a spit roast and line dancing party on the Saturday night, at our farm in Woodside North, followed by a leisurely Sunday morning and maybe some mechanical instruction or an historical tourist drive for those interested.
Having the celebration at the farm allows us to minimize the cost to members, to make it easily accessible and to expose members to an area of the state that we would not normally explore. We can also combine it with a mechanical session, something we have not done for some time. Being at the farm will also make it possible for members to bring their own campers or caravans, or stay in the farmhouse itself, again minimizing the cost of attending.
We will be confirming the details of the party in the September magazine so please reserve the weekend of October 15
th for what should be a most
enjoyable event.
On the weekend leading up to the party we will again be participating in the Melbourne Leisurefest show at Sandown racecourse. We will be looking for volunteers for the stand who will hopefully attract some new members as a result. If you would like to attend the show you can probably do so for free, for the small cost of being on the club stand for a couple of hours. We will probably have four tickets available for each of the four days of the event and we will make these available to anyone willing to help.
In the next month I will be attending the association’s combined special general and president’s meeting. The special meeting will be voting on the move of the AGM to November. I will report on these meetings next month.

Robert Anwyl will be providing us with a presentation about Molecular Science Products oil additive.
Andrew and Lisa Jantke currently use this additive and claim that it makes a big difference to performance and fuel consumption of their Impreza and Rodeo.

LAKE EYRE TRIP:

I am planning to head to Australia's inland sea this October. It would be great if you could come along. See page 8 for the proposed itinerary.
The trip is dependant on the road conditions and the weather (it has already been put off once). The standard trip requirements as listed on page 9 are the minimum needed, including a full-size spare wheel/tyre, and plenty of drinking water. The plan is to stay in caravan parks for the most part, but we need to be totally self-sufficient just in case. If you are thinking of coming and don't have everything on the list, please talk to me.
Please give me an indication at the August meeting if you are thinking of coming along, so I can plan appropriately.
Bear in mind that this trip overlaps with the Border Track trip time-wise, however it is possible to stitch the two together by heading off early from Lake Eyre to meet the other group at Pinnaroo, by arrangement with Peter Bellis (see page 8).

STANDARD TRIP EQUIPMENT & RECOVERY GEAR
The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experience in the bush, increasing 4WDing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clarification of individual trip requirements and standards.
Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to increase confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not
participate until payment is received.
Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recommends that each vehicle carry the following items of equipment on every trip:
a) Personal details form as specified by FWDV, copy to Trip Leader
b) Two Rated D- Shackles (minimum 3.2t);
c) Rated “Snatch’em” Strap;
d) Recovery Points, Front & Rear; plus optional bridle strap, according to
vehicle design;
e) AM (27Mhz) Channel 5 or UHF (477Mhz) Channel 16 CB Radio;
f) Fire Extinguisher, accessible to the driver;
g) Spare Tyre (full size);
h) Jack and Wheel Brace, or equivalent;
i) Emergency Supplies (matches, food, water and clothing);
j) Sufficient Fuel, Oil and Water for the trip and delays;
k) A Tyre Pressure Gauge; Compressor (according to the trip)
l) An Axe, Bow or Chain saw;
m) A Sturdy Shovel (collapsible shovels are no good);
n) Spare Parts (appropriate to the nature of the Trip);
o) A Tool Kit;
p) Personal First Aid Kit;
q) The Vehicle Manual.
Any vehicle not carrying at least the first five (5) items of equipment should contact the individual Trip Leader before leaving. Any Club member unsure about any of the items of equipment listed above are advised to contact the the Trip and Social Co-ordinator or the Trip Leader concerned.
All Trip Leaders carry a complete First Aid Kit in case of emergency. All non-emergency medical needs are expected to be meet by individuals own medical supplies.

“GERMANTOWN” DAY TRIP

A damp July morning saw us gathering in a quiet back street in Thomastown against an old stone wall. As rain pattered down, we waited to be let through the wooden gate into the garden of Ziebell’s farmhouse. At the stroke of eleven, our guide Tatiana Joukoff appeared and invited us in for morning tea. While we waited for the rest of the group to arrive, we looked through the house, which was set with period furniture and explanatory signage.
At 11:15am Tatiana and her friend commenced the tour, which took us through the 1860s house and surrounding outbuildings. This included the original stone farm sheds and the eight metre deep hand-hewn underground water storage (now capped for safety). Walking across the reserve beyond we passed by the original Lutheran church which served the German farmers and their families 160 years ago and is still a functioning place of worship.
Finally we walked t h r o u g h t h e cemetery, where burials still take place (providing you can establish your parentage).
At 12:30 we said goodbye to our genial hosts and also to Alby and Rae Turner who had another appointment. We started off towards Whittlesea, half an hour to the north. Busy urban High Street gradually became more and more rural as new subdivisions appeared and finally open countryside.
The convoy had spread out, with Martin up ahead relaying instructions over the radio.

Unfortunately contact was lost, and Phil (who was following up) was unable to confirm directions, so he led the cavalcade into Whittlesea by the most direct route.
Meanwhile Martin and Dot were sitting at a quiet intersection 10 Km away wondering what had become of everyone! It may be a first, losing an entire convoy (gold coin fine). Phone contact was made with the group as they were arriving at the pub for lunch. See you in ten minutes, was all Martin could say!
After the joyful reunion, a hearty lunch was enjoyed by all, including Bev who had joined us after finishing her volunteer tasks at Fed Square. The group then set off (in close convoy this time) and immediately took the wrong turn out of town. In fact it was Hill Street (Martin and Dot live in Hill Street but not that one). A quick correction and we were on the perimeter road around the top of Yan Yean reservoir, which provided some stunning views of the city and the water. Then along the Arthurs Creek Road for a couple of kilometres and a right turn into Middle Hut Road, a dirt road which runs through farm country straight as a die for five or six kilometres. The urban sprawl hasn’t reached here yet, although it’s not far away.
The plan was to take as many unsealed roads as possible to Doncaster, our final destination. We managed this quite well, with a lot of ducking and weaving to avoid the major arterials, especially through Wattle Glen.
Despite tour best efforts, suburbia started to enclose us as we circled around the back of Eltham on Reynolds Road. We could not avoid rejoining the bitumen in crossing the Yarra along Fitzsimons Lane (no longer a rural backwater but a major highway); then through the suburbs to Victoria Street and the little piece of history on the hill called Schramm’s Cottage.
The cottage was originally located on Doncaster Road and was moved to the present site when the road was widened in the seventies. The house is set up as if the owners were still present, with an impressive array of domestic items and costumes modelled by mannequins in each room.
Around the site are a variety of historic exhibits, including a

fruit-sorting and packaging shed from the orcharding days, a smithy, and a Slade hut, containing teaching materials for practical construction using hand tools. There is a replica of the tram that used to take sightseers from Box Hill station to the mighty iron lookout tower on the hill where Doncaster Shoppingtown now stands. There is also an original cemetery set among the pine trees, which tells a grim tale, as many of its graves mark young children who didn’t survive the many illnesses prevalent in those times.
Altogether an fascinating day with as interesting a drive as can still be achieved in metropolitan Melbourne.

8.1. The following motion had been put to the members in the June magazine:
In rule 6.d replace the words “the day of the Annual General Meeting” with “31
st May”.
In rule 5.b replace the words “two (2)” with “one (1)”.
Moved Peter Bellis, seconded Damian Stock.
8.2. In Peter’s absence, Damian as seconder spoke to the motion. Martin read out the existing clauses of the Rules of Association affected by the motion. Damian read the motion, which was then put to the members. The motion was accepted unanimously on show of hands and Damian duly declared the motion passed.

9.1. Mention was made of Peter and Jean’s absence due to a bereavement in the family.
9.2. Damian advised that Val and Alan Chrystal will not be renewing their membership due to personal circumstances and wish members well.

Minutes of the meeting of the committee of the Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc held on 14th August 2011 at the farm of Angela and Damian Stock in Woodside North starting at 10:00am.

3. Quorum: A quorum was achieved with 6 committee members present.
4. Minutes of the Previous Meeting
4.1. Minutes of the July 2011 committee meeting were accepted without amendment.

4.2.1. Leisurefest – Registered interest with FWDV. Awaiting advice.

Martin has requested the club purchase Microsoft Publisher so when someone else takes on the editor role the software would be handed over so the next person would not have to purchase.
Motion: That the Club purchase a copy of MS Publisher 2010. Moved Martin Foot, seconded Jessica Walsh CARRIED. Action: Damian Stock to investigate cost options.

Discussion about putting all the committee positions in the mag so it visible to all members.
After subsequent discussion with Bev, she will not be taking up an ordinary committee position.
Trip and social needs to provide details of the trips to the editor for publishing. Trip leader to provide the details to trip and social.
Driver education – Jessica has indicated she will take on the role.

8. Committee Planning Day: [After lunch.] Discussion around:
What is working
What is not working
Not showing that there are extended trips on the web site.
What needs to be changed
Committee meetings need to keep on track.
Look at time keeper.
Look at a time limit.
Look at rotate the chair.
To be considered
Look at doing trips where smelling the roses is the main reason for the trip, so that means people can stop when they like so look at things.
Share the food preparation, so to have a common meal with trip members. People come together not isolated cooking. More social environment.
Look at a door prize to fill out trip survey. Look at survey monkey to do it electronically.
Put in the news letter the birthdays of the month.
Need to make people feel included.
Create an email for the membership number. Then people would be able to send emails to other for birthdays, etc.
How do you see yourself fitting into the club?
Those people who don’t come to things but keep paying. What do they see in the club?
Test the members to see if they are too busy.
Exit survey for club members who don’t wish continue their membership.
Big trip every couple years.
Need 2 years to organise and make sure people are available.
Need to consider how you are getting to the desitination. eg train and then drive.
Don’t want to drive all day.

How do we attract more members?
In house driver training.
Promote private training property.
Ongoing driver training for the club members.
Push the vacancy’s every month until they filled.
Succession planning.
Focus on the electronic media, look at facebook, twitter, maybe a blog.
Promote to the new owners they will feel safe with their cars after doing driver training.
Promote via Eastern and Cambur.
Business cards – Club cards that can be handed out. Limited details with contact details.
Free introductory driver training.
Club website needs to show that we are active. It looks like we are static.
Need to look at a video on the first page loading.
When the page first loads before you need to scroll the page needs to be catchy.
Builds the interest.
Turn the vision into a strategy.
