The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.
The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2013/14 year were agreed at the general meeting in April 2013 and are as follows:
● Interstate: $105 (Seniors card - $100) ● Single: $115 (Seniors card - $105) ● Joint/family: $135 - (Seniors card - $120). Joining Fee $10 ($20 for Joint/Family)

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Welcome to the July magazine and my latest president's report. I am writing this while sitting under a clear sky and almost full moon, in the Birdsville caravan park. The members of the Simpson Desert trip have just returned from the Birdsville pub where we enjoyed a buffet meal of ribs, shanks and other meats, together with various sides. We rendezvoused at the pub after some of us returned from a visit to Big Red where we enjoyed the sunset and got to see what we would be in for when we started our crossing in the coming days. All vehicles, except mine, made it safely up to the top of what is supposedly the largest sand dune in the Simpson and we then enjoyed the sunset as the temperature plummeted. My vehicle was not there as I decided to tag along with Jessica and take photos of the event in comfort. We did have a bit of a drama on the way back to Birdsville but that will have to wait for the trip report. Of course outback Queensland is a huge departure from where I have been for the last month or so. After California, Angela and I briefly visited Long Island, New York, before flying off to Ireland for a little over a week. We then returned to New York for their Fourth of July celebrations, which included the customary Macey's fireworks. There is nothing like standing with a few hundred thousand people looking at four identical sets of fireworks being launched from barges in the Hudson River. They certainly went for a long time but, without musical accompaniment, it was not very exciting but at least we can say that we were there for the event. Unfortunately, while New York was sweltering through near century temperatures, on the old scale, with extremely high humidity, Ireland was not enjoying summer weather at all, with nothing like the warmth we were expecting after the great weather we had when we were there last September. It was very grey and gloomy with temperatures closer to what Melbourne was experiencing in the middle of winter, if not lower. I think that I ventured out in shorts for one day, only to realise how foolish I was and to quickly return to much warmer attire. Anyway Angela enjoyed meeting some family that she had not met before and spending more time exploring graveyards in search of distant ancestors. One such encounter involved a personal tour of Queen's University in Belfast, conducted by one of Angela's distant relatives, who is a professor in the law department there. He is also a published author who spends much of his time traveling around the world helping with political issues in other countries. The university is one of four that were established around Ireland to allow not just Anglicans, but also Catholics and Presbyterians, to attend university. The university library is the most modern building on campus with one of the

largest collections of books in the country. After our four week overseas trip I had little less than a week to get the Forester ready for the Simpson trip. This was shortened by nearly two days as my son, Matt, had not finished the work he was doing on it. As a result, there was a mad scramble for the remaining time to finish the car and get everything packed into it. As a result, I didn't get to leave Melbourne on the Sunday, well after everyone else were well on their way to our meeting place at Hattah Lakes. It was not until I was nearly at Hattah before I realised that I had left my mattress behind so had to do a quick purchase in Mildura the following day, after an uncomfortable night spend in the front seat of the Forester. This was partly due to the missing mattress and partly due to the lateness of my arrival into Hattah and the inclement weather we encountered on arrival. So far, the trip has been fairly uneventful, apart from a small navigational error leaving Mildura and a road closure causing us to bypass Menindee Lakes, and our overnight stop there. Still, this gave us a little more time in Broken Hill to organise desert passes and the like, before heading off into the outback. With eight club vehicles on the trip, with six of these being Subaru’s, I am sure that there will be plenty of fun and games by the time we make it back to Melbourne in early August. Apart from Jessica, who has to be back in Melbourne earlier for work, the rest of us on the trip will miss the July meeting so I hope that you have a great time in our absence. Jessica will be chairperson for the meeting, as she did while I was away in July. Please make sure that you come along and support her in this role. By the time we next meet, at the club's general meeting and AGM in August, the trip will probably be just a blur but I am sure that we will find plenty to talk about, and plenty of fines to fill the club's coffers. We will, of course, be electing a new club committee at the AGM so if you are interested in being more involved please have someone nominate you for a position. All positions will be open although some existing committee will be standing again. Don't forget also to fill in your club awards nominations as these are an important part of the AGM agenda. I am sure that you can think of someone deserving for each of these awards. Anyway, that’s enough from me for this month. EDITOR’S REPORT
There are no formal trip reports this month with the group being in the Simpson Desert. From what I have herd they are having lots of fun, but some unexpected occurrences have already happened!
A reminder that we are no longer sending out hard copies of the magazine before the general meetings to the majority of members. The exceptions are those who have not registered an email address with the club. Everyone else will receive an electronic link to the magazine on-line and can collect their magazines at the meeting or print them using the files provided in the email.

JESSICA’S JOTTINGS
Do you know the height of your car? Or how much it weighs? These are important considerations when packing for a long trip. Putting things on the roof will increase the height and that tree you used to get under in the driveway may now be too low to clear the extras.
Make sure you know your GVM (gross vehicle mass) as that will tell you the maximum weight permissible. Don't forget the weight of any passengers and fuel. They all add up. If you are too heavy you will affect the handling of the car and the stress may increase the risk of mechanical failure. Not to mention that you could possibly void your vehicle warranty.

Commencing in Sunbury, this fun, social navigational run will take you across some picturesque countryside while challenging your brain (so make sure you bring it with you!). Keep your eyes peeled throughout the day too as you can’t miss a thing. There’ll be plenty of socialising and we’ll enjoy a BBQ lunch at the halfway point. A great day for the kids! All roads are 2WD, formed roads with some of them dirt roads.

8. Special Resolution
The club is required to update its constitution in light of the Associations Incorporation Reform Act. If the club does nothing, then it will be obliged to operate under the model rules that are specified in the Regulations. Peter gave a brief run-down on the major changes from the current consti-tution to the proposed constitution, which was circulated to members in May 2013 and discussed in some detail at the May meeting.

I, Peter Gordon Bellis, propose that the club’s current constitution be re-placed with a new one that complies with the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 and associated regulations and ministerial directives. Moved by Peter Bellis, seconded by Jessica Walsh. The motion was put to a vote of the members present via a show of hands. Jessica declared that the special resolution was unanimously carried. Jessica moved a motion of thanks to Peter for all his work and effort in putting together the new constitution. Motion was accepted and carried with applause from the members.

● Vacuum packing cannot only be used for food but also for towels and clothing (keeps the dust out) and spare parts (such as bearings, spark plugs, etc).

● Freshield is based in Clayton. ● Have both a 12 volt vacuum pack/sealing machine and a container
system with a hand vacuum pump. ● Rolls of vacuum sealing film are available in two different widths. ● Members were so impressed with what was on offer that 4 vacuum
pack/sealing machines, and some container systems were purchased after the presentation.

Jessica’s Sale: 17" alloy rim to suit the current model Outback. It is fitted with an almost new Kumho 225/60 R17 road tyre that has done about 500km (max). $200 3x 225/60 R17 Yokohama Geolander G012 A/T-S tyres to suit the current Outback/Liberty. Two of them have been driven about 30,000km ($50 ea.) and the other is near new with about 4,000km of use ($100).

Minutes of the meeting of the committee of the Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc held on Tuesday 2nd July 2013 at the home of Dale Rebgetz starting at 7:45pm.

– at least $1,500 worth. ● Trying to achieve a balance of guest presenters who are selling prod-
ucts and presenters who have been on a trip or have knowledge of something.
● Timing of guest presenter’s presentations – have it at the start or the end of a general meeting?
● “Fines and Fun” – should be just “fines and fun”, not an extended trip report.

● Had 2 membership renewals in the past week. ● Still have 12 memberships outstanding. Will follow up by phone. ● Have not received any membership application from Jed. Wants to

● Will be undertaking the necessary 4WD driving courses with 4WD Victoria to finalise her 4WD Instructors’ course.
● 4WD Victoria General meeting regarding the constitutional changes almost did not happen as there was barely a quorum. Under the new pro-posed constitution, proxies will be taken into account in deter-mining the quorum. Also, it was agreed that there will be 3 spe-cial general meetings and the annual general meeting per each. Any meetings of club presidents’, etc, are separate meetings and are advisory only.

STANDARD TRIP EQUIPMENT
The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experi-ence in the bush, increasing 4WDing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clari-fication of individual trip requirements and standards.
Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to in-crease confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not
participate until payment is received.
Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recom-mends that each vehicle carry the following items of equipment on every trip:
a) Personal details form as specified by FWDV, copy to Trip Leader
b) Two Rated D- Shackles (minimum 3.2t);
c) Rated “Snatch’em” Strap;
d) Recovery Points, Front & Rear; plus optional bridle strap, according to ve-
hicle design;
e) AM (27Mhz) Channel 5 or UHF (477Mhz) Channel 16 CB Radio;
f) Fire Extinguisher, accessible to the driver;
g) Spare Tyre (full size);
h) Jack and Wheel Brace, or equivalent;
i) Emergency Supplies (matches, food, water and clothing);
j) Sufficient Fuel, Oil and Water for the trip and delays;
k) A Tyre Pressure Gauge; Compressor (according to the trip)
l) An Axe, Bow or Chain saw;
m) A Sturdy Shovel (collapsible shovels are no good);
n) Spare Parts (appropriate to the nature of the Trip);
o) A Tool Kit;
p) Personal First Aid Kit;
q) The Vehicle Manual.
Any vehicle not carrying at least the first five (5) items of equipment should contact the individual Trip Leader before leaving. Any Club member unsure about any of the items of equipment listed above are advised to contact the the Trip and Social Co-ordinator or the Trip Leader concerned.
All Trip Leaders carry a complete First Aid Kit in case of emergency. All non-emergency medical needs are expected to be meet by individuals own medical sup-plies.
