The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.

The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2013/14 year were agreed at the general meeting in April 2013 and are as follows:

● Interstate: $110 (Seniors card - $105) ● Single: $120 (Seniors card - $110) ● Joint/family: $140 - (Seniors card - $125). Joining Fee $10 ($20 for Joint/Family)

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to the August club magazine and my last report as club president. After a number of years in this position it is time, or maybe overtime, that I moved on and allowed someone else to guide this ship. Who that someone might be will be revealed at next week’s AGM, when the nominations for all committee positions will be announced, so please come along and witness the changing of the guard, so to speak. There may even be a spare position going that you might be interested in.

It seems like no time since we had our last meeting, at Ringwood Trade Training Facility, but a few things have happened since them. The last meeting itself was well attended with many club members taking the opportunity to examine the underneath of their vehicles and, in some cases, under their bonnets as well. There were a few surprised looks when a few extra dints and dings were found in some unexpected places. I am sure that a bit of repair work was going to be the result of the evening for some members.

It was great to see a potential new member in attendance, Lynette, having just moved over from WA a few months ago. Lynette was a member of the WA Subaru club before moving to Victoria so she has some experience driving although probably in terrain unlike what we have her in Victoria. I believe that Lynette got some good exposure to snow soon after the meeting when she attended the club’s snow day trip on the following weekend. I hope that it has raised her interest in seeing more of the high country in the future.

It was also great to see one of our former club presidents, Mike Dunne, at the club meeting, all the way from Warragul. I hope that we see more of both Lynette and Mike at our club events in the future.

As I mentioned earlier, a snow day trip was run on the weekend following the July meeting, thanks to some quick organizing by Katie and Peter, assisted by our trip and social coordinator, Martin. There had been a good level of interest shown at the July meeting for a snow trip so Katie and Peter offered to organize one, at short notice, in the Rawson area. Unfortunately the planned trip leader, Rick, could not make it for this trip however he has committed to run a second one, in the coming weeks, if the snow hangs around.

There are certain requirements that the club needs to fulfill in order to be covered, from and insurance perspective, when we run a trip. One of these is that the trip is registered with the trip and social coordinator and advertised, which this one was, so it was merely up to Katie and Peter to contact all of the

Page 5: Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria - August 2014 magazine online edition

Page: 5

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

members, who had registered interest, to ensure that they were aware of the the change of date. The result was a well-attended trip with plenty of snow for the attendees to enjoy.

Hopefully, in the future, an e-trip registration system will allow prospective trip leaders to register a trip and members will be able to electronically register their interest in attending. This will require members to be advised electronically that a trip is being run and, for those that are not on email, the trip coordinator or leader will have to advise them by phone, SMS or some other means. I am sure that, over time, this will be a very positive development in the way the club plans, organizes and runs trips.

Just after the July club meeting the association was to have its quarterly presidents’ meeting however, shortly before the meeting, an opportunity was presented to me, as association president, to have Victoria’s newest senator, Ricky Muir, attend the meeting. As this would be a great chance for the senator to meet with the club presidents and delegates in attendance this opportunity was taken and the president’s meeting was postponed in order for the senator to attend.

The result was a very informative meeting where the presidents heard from Ricky about his new role and Ricky heard all about the great work that the association clubs are doing for the community. This included a presentation on the association’s newest program, Clean Up The Bush, which Ricky and his entourage were clearly impressed with. This will be a great program for our club to get involved in when it is officially launched in the coming weeks.

Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, this will be my last report as club president however I hope to contribute in the future as immediate past president. I look forward to seeing you all soon, hopefully at the AGM, or wherever our paths might cross. Take care.

Damian

Saturday 13 September

Trip Rating: Social

Trip Leader: Stephen Whittaker, email: [email protected]

Now that the club has a strong connection to a little café called Cog, it’s time we all sampled the fine food and coffee we hear comes out of this quaint little place. That’s right; it’s a trip to visit Doug and Michelle at Cog Bike Café and it’s your choice of means to get there -- bicycle or vehicle?

Whether travelling by two or four wheels, we will all meet in the car park of the Launching Place Hotel (at the junction of Don Road and the Warburton Hwy) in Launching Place at 10:30am for an 11am departure.

We’ll then split into two groups: those travelling by bike and those travelling by car – and meet again at Cog Bike Café.

Getting to Cog – the choice is yours:

• Bike Ride: from Launching Place to Warburton (finishing at Cog). Enjoy an approximate 10.5km ride to Warburton along the scenic rail trail. • Drive: from Launching Place to Warburton (finishing at Cog). Mike will lead approximately an hour’s scenic drive on very easy 2WD roads from Launching Place to Warburton and the Cog Bike Café.

Let’s pack the café and have a great lunch together at the beginning of spring. After lunch, the cyclists will hit the Rail Trail again back to Launching Place and drivers can head straight home or take another scenic drive back to Launching Place. Looking forward to seeing you all on the day – no matter your mode of transport!

TRIP REPORTS

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

by Jean Bellis

Saturday 19th July saw Christmas in July return after a break last year while some members of the Club did the Simpson Desert Trip.

Bev and Enid arrived about 4pm to help with the final food preparations and Peter had the BBQ’s hot and ready to go. Once we had everything on and cooking we set and decorated the tables. Enid decorated the Christmas tree and we were ready to go.

Elaine said Grace, asking God’s blessing on all those present and their families and giving thanks for the food and fun we would have.

We enjoyed a great meal of roast beef, pork and chicken, baked potatoes and a variety of other vegetables. The Christmas Bon bons were pulled and we all laughed at the little gifts they contained which included tiny yoyos, shoe horns, tiny packs of playing cards, a stapler etc. We all donned the party hats but we certainly didn’t laugh at the jokes.

The main course was cleared away with lots of willing helpers.

Then it was time for desert. Enid took on the task of whipping the cream and I am still finding cream on things in the pantry from when she lifted the whiz out of the cream without turning it off. Dave and Angela prepared and served the plum pudding and custard.

Page 11: Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria - August 2014 magazine online edition

Page: 11

TRIP REPORTS

Peter had made a very y u m m y r a s p b e r r y cheesecake which he served. We also had ice cream.

A few of us had a laugh when Peter asked Dave to get a solid spoon out of the drawer to serve with and Dave produced a measuring cup and a soup ladle before finding the ice-cream scoop. (Not sure how much ice-cream Dave wanted.)

With many willing helpers the kitchen was quickly put in order.

We then drew door prizes. The winners were, Bob Marshall, Bev Davison, Jean Bellis, Edith Fullalove, Michael Hartshorne and ?????.

As some people started to leave others were happy to sit and just enjoy each others company.

Thank you to everyone who assisted and I hope that all who attended had a great evening.

TRIP REPORTS

SNOW TRIP - RAWSON

Saturday, 2 August

by Katie Mynard

Peter and I saw the weather forecast for the weekend after the July club meeting and decided late that Thursday night that we needed to do a snow trip on the Saturday. After madly texting and emailing those that put their names down for Rick's trip on the Friday morning, we were running a snow trip! Unfortunately Rick was not able to come, but he is still planning on running another snow trip later.

Everyone was to meet up at our place on the Saturday morning and we'd head off from there at 9am. Lynette was the first to arrive, followed by Peter & Edith, Graham & Kerry and Andrew & Lisa. After a quick cuppa and relieving our lemon tree of a few lemons, we were on our way!

We met Jamie in Moe and headed north. Following a rather slow Prado up the hill and spotting a wallaby on the side of the road, we eventually got to Erica where we were going to hire chains for those without them. Then we had to make a slight change of plans - Erica Ski Hire had run out of chains to fit Lynette's Forester so we decided to leave the Forester behind and Lynette travelled with Jamie. Once everyone else was sorted (the queue being out the door) we headed north again.

Our first sighting of snow was just after Parkers Corner – it was looking promising!!

We turned off towards Mt St Gwinear and the snow on the ground kept increasing. It was not long until we had constant snow. Two other vehicles ended up in our convoy and when we turned right instead of heading up to Mt St Gwinear they kept following us. The two vehicles didn't know what to think when we all stopped for our first fallen tree - they thought we were going up to the mountain - they were wrong. Both vehicles eventually turned around and headed back the right way. Lynette was (finally) able to get out and experience her first snow and many photos of the scenery were taken whilst Jamie cut up the offending tree with his chainsaw and we were on our way again.

A couple of fallen trees later (Peter had to get our bigger chainsaw out as well) and we started travelling on snow that no one else had driven on - Peter was

Page 13: Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria - August 2014 magazine online edition

Page: 13

TRIP REPORTS

very happy. We were all enjoying driving through such a beautiful winter wonderland and many more photos were taken. We had to fit chains to our car at one point in order to get moving again, and along the way some of us found out that drains can be tricky to escape if you stop in them, but there was no damage done.

Unfortunately all of the tree clearing and the bumper bar/axle-deep snow meant that we ended up having a late lunch at our planned morning tea stop (where we had stopped on previous trips) and we decided that it would be best to turn around and go back the way we came instead of continuing on the loop we had planned.

On the way back Peter and Edith were kind enough to assist us with a tow when we pulled over to wait for everyone and couldn't get moving again (we'd removed the snow chains at lunchtime).

Coming back to Trafalgar was uneventful, we remembered to pick up Lynette's car at Erica and we all decided that dinner at the Trafalgar Pub was a good idea.

A lovely dinner was had by all, some were even able to eat all of their meal, and then everyone headed off home.

We had plenty of powder snow, some of us learned that snow can not only fall from the sky but also from the trees and a snowman appeared and was subsequently murdered by a hit and run driver, and apart from the snowman, everyone had a great day.

VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I attended the FWDV President’s meeting on behalf of the club last weekend [16th August - ed]. It was well attended with about 40 clubs being represented. There are now 76 affiliated clubs so that is over half the membership present.

The Association’s finances were discussed, and whilst the final figures are still before the auditor, it was clear that we are in a much stronger position than we were six month’s ago. The combination of some cuts to expenditure, a loan from the national body and advance payment of fees by many clubs has helped the bottom line and the short term cash flow issue.

The association has received a $200,000 grant from the state government based in no small measure on the work the clubs do across the state. Something that we as a club should do is consider some volunteer/environmental work from time to time. The Association is also working towards establishing some continuing funding as well, to remove some doubt from our income.

The members spent a couple of hours in a workshop as part of the meeting, discussing such things as communication opportunities, the website and driver training. The results of this will be discussed by the board and a summary should be available soon.

The meeting was also attended by Senator Ricky Muir from the Motoring Enthusiasts Party, who spoke on his background. He fielded quite a few questions from the audience, and it was quite clear that he will be an ally in Canberra for us.

Finally, this month the club is holding its annual general meeting where all committee positions will be declared vacant. Please consider standing as it is only though the support of the members on the committee that the Club can continue to prosper.

Happy Travels

Jessica Walsh

TECHNICAL TORQUE

We are fortunate to have access to a host of after market accessories. Some are specifically manufactured for particular vehicles like bull bars, and others are generic such as radios or spot lights.

Whenever we fit anything to our vehicles we need to make sure that we don't contravene the Australian Design Rules (ADRs) because they don't just apply to new vehicles. Will the accessory affect the vehicle's weight, or towing ability? Will the new tyres be too wide or the new suspension lift the car too much?

An accessory retailer may not know the particulars of your car and what can and cannot be done with it, so it pays to ask around. For example, spot lights must be fitted in pairs symmetrically on a vehicle - which rules out a single LED light bar under the ADRs. This rule is in the process of being changed in Victoria and it would be a pretty tough police officer who would choose to enforce it, but it is important to realise that it is there.

So please take the time to investigate what you want to add to your vehicle, and the best way to do it.

Happy Travels,

Jessica Walsh

My car recently became an RACV Connected Vehicle. This involves a gadget plugged into the OBD-II port, which mechanics use to monitor the car’s state of health in the workshop. On my 2003 Forester, this is under the dash slightly to the right of the steering column.

Using Bluetooth, this device talks to your Android or iPhone via the RACV Connect app about how the car’s chugging along. In particular, if it’s thrown an error code, the system deciphers it (haven’t experienced this as yet).

The app has other functionality such as calculating travel times and petrol station locations and you can also use it as a logbook. Total Care customers get a good deal ($20 establishment and no annual fee) whereas other RACV service members pay $100 and $50 per year.

I’ll report after I’ve had it for a while on how useful I think it is — Martin Foot
