“From a brand point, the market con-tinues to be fragmented in nature of thesupply base and marketplaces will not beable to enter and organize the GI sellermarket. The government will have toput in effort on the ground through self-help groups to train these artisans andindividuals,” said an e-commerce execu-tive, seeking anonymity.

A GI tag is essentially used on prod-ucts that correspond to a specific geo-graphical location or origin, including acertain town or region, such as Darjeel-ing tea, Coorg Arabica coffee, and Kash-miri saffron, which are largely soldthrough offline retail.

By listing GI products, the govern-ment is pushing the mandate for localbusinesses, as it looks to increase focustowards indigenous goods, said anothere-commerce executive. DPIIT and con-sumer affairs ministry has mandatede-commerce firms to ensure that sellersmention the ‘country of origin’ for newand existing listings, a move that is turn-ing out to be a nightmare for online com-merce firms.

The department for promotion ofindustry and internal trade(DPIIT) on Wednesday met

e-commerce majors, including Flipkart,Amazon, Snapdeal, Pepperfry andPaytm Mall, to discuss the scope of list-ing geographical indication (GI) prod-ucts on their platforms.

The government said it is contemplat-ing a proposal to make GI tagging andlogo mandatory for such products, andsought the advice of the e-commercefirms to create a separate category ontheir respective platforms.

Representatives of retail chainmajors, including Vishal Mega MartPvt.Ltd, were also present at the meet-ing, along with state department repre-sentatives of Kerala and Odisha, amongothers.

“The meeting was a collaborativethought on how e-commerce compa-nies can list these products and under-take promotions to push sales of these GIproducts… It was also discussed that themanufacturers of these products shouldundertake putting the GI logo, like it isdone for ‘Make In India’ products, toensure that resellers know that it is a GIproduct,” said a person who was presentat the meeting. However, a detailedtimeline has not been set for releasingthe guidelines for the initiative, the per-son said.

Participants highlighted the role ofthe government in cataloguing, stan-dardizing and scaling of GI products. They also said that linkages need to becreated with suppliers and manufactur-ers.

Advocate PrashantBhushan has filed anapplication before the

Supreme Court to defer thehearing on the quantum ofsentence in the suo moto con-tempt case, which has beenlisted for 20 August after thetop court on 14 August heldhim guilty of contempt ofcourt for two tweets criticizingthe judiciary.

Bhushan has said in hisapplication that he intends tofile a review against the orderof 14 August after studying it indetail and seeking appropriatelegal counsel as the ramifica-tion of the order is of graveconstitutional significance, inparticular on the right to freespeech.

“It is respectfully submittedthat the deferment of the saidhearing, as prayed in thepresent application, would bein the interests of justice inview of the underlying publicpolicy with respect to safe-guarding liberty of a citizenunder Article 21 till such timeas his first appeal (in this casethe review application) is con-sidered,” the application said.

Bhushan also submitted, “Incriminal contempt proceed-ings, this Hon’ble Court func-tions like a trial court and isalso the last court. Section 19(1)gives a statutory right ofappeal to a person found guiltyof contempt by the HighCourt. The fact that there is noappeal against an order of thisHon’ble Court makes it doublynecessary that it takes theutmost precaution to ensurethat justice is not only donebut seen to be done.”

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairper-son and managing director ofBengaluru-based Biocon Ltd,said covid-19 presents India withan opportunity to leverage its

talent pool and become a part of the globalinnovation value chain, instead of justbeing a service provider.

In a podcast with Michael (Mike) Milkenof the Milken Institute, a US-based thinktank on philanthropy, Shaw said the pan-demic could help India become the “inno-vator and not just the maker”, consideringits strengths in information technology, analytics and data science. The large num-ber of engineering and medical graduatesmust innovate and not just offer services orcontract manufacturing, she added.

“We’ve got to start creating value. Andwe’ve got to start leveraging our science, our technology, and really move up theinnovation part.” The Biocon chief, whotested positive for covid-19, said the pan-demic also brought the spotlight on Indiaand how it should look at the future, espe-cially in terms of its presence in the phar-maceutical sector, which accounts for just3% of the global market, despite being the biggest pro-ducer of generic medicines.

India is home to zoonoticviruses such as SARS andH1N1, but has done little to ini-tiate research, but now thatthe pandemic led to all sorts ofhardships, a sense of purposeshould drive research to make affordablemedication for global use, she added. “It’sabout a billion patients, not just a billiondollars. The billions will come later, but it’sabout serving those billion patients first, which to me is my sense of purpose. That’s

why I’m very committed to compassionatecapitalism.”

Shaw also spoke about the pandemic andthe post-lockdown spike in covid-19 cases, making India one of the worst affected

countries with a caseload of over 2.8 mil-lion, and over 53,000 fatalities. She said thespread of the infection was successfullycontained during the lockdown, especiallyin places like Bengaluru.

“But the moment the unlocking hap-

pened, I think people were under theimpression that the virus has been chasedaway and we can now go back to normallife. And that was a big mistake,” she said.

She said metros such as Bengaluru,Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi, which were the worst affected, are expected to peak by theend of November. Accordingto Shaw, better access to treat-ment was possible becausepatients with mild symptomsremained in home care to freeup hospitals, which also

helped to keep mortality rates under check. The recent sero-surveillance had indicatedthat people living in Mumbai slums andother parts of the country which have con-gested spaces seem to have developed herdimmunity, Shaw added.

Revenue in FY20 fell 11.7% to

₹3.5 trillion rupees, said Acma

said Deepak Jain, president,Acma.

Jain said the auto partsindustry is seeing businessreturning to pre-covid levelsin segments such as two-wheelers and tractors butmuted demand for commer-cial vehicles continues to be anarea of concern.

“The auto componentindustry faced acute challen-ges on the front of working

capital, produc-tion and dysfunc-tional logistics.The industry’sperformance ise x p e c t e d t oreturn to pre-covid levels bythe festive sea-son,” Jain said.He, however,

warned that intermittent lock-downs in states where facto-ries are located and a shortageof skilled labour remainthreats to production ramp-upplans.

Jain said Acma has recom-mended the government toaccord “continuous produc-tion industry” status to theautomotive industry to allowregular operations despitelocal lockdowns.

The industry body said alsothat total imports of auto partsfell to $15.4 billion in FY20,from $17.7 billion in the previ-ous year. China was the biggestexporter of auto parts to Indiawith a 26% share, followed bySouth Korea at 14%.

MUMBAI

India’s auto parts industryrecorded a drop in revenueafter five years, hit by a pro-

longed slowdown in thedomestic market and theglobal impact of the coronavi-rus pandemic.

Revenue in the fiscal yearended 31 March fell 11.7% to₹3.5 trillion rupees ($49.2 bil-lion), the Automotive Compo-nent Manufacturers Associa-tion of India (Acma) said onWednesday.

“The auto parts industryhad last seen a marginal dropof 2% YoY in FY13-14. Postthat, it has been growing onthe back of growing demandfor vehicles, exports and in theaftermarket,” Vinnie Mehta, director general, Acma said ina phone interview.

He said sale of parts to auto-makers, exports and aftermar-ket sales contributed 60%, 25%and 15%, respec-tively to the autoc o m p o n e n tindustry’s annualturnover.

A decline of18% in domesticvehicle sales inFY20 led to partssuppliers record-ing a fall of about17% in total sales to automobilecompanies during the year at$40.5 billion.

Meanwhile, parts exportsdeclined to $14.5 billion inFY20, from $15.2 billion inFY19. The automotive after-market recorded a turnover of$9.8 billion, marginally lowerfrom $10.1 billion in FY19.

“Subdued vehicle demand, investments made for transi-tion from BS-IV to BS-VI,liquidity crunch, lack of a clar-ity on policy for electrificationof vehicles and slowdown inkey export markets, amongothers, had an adverse impacton the performance of thecomponents sector in India asalso on its expansion plans,”

The National PaymentsCorp. of India (NPCI) onWednesday launched

NPCI International PaymentsLtd (NIPL) to extend the servi-ces offered by Unified Pay-ments Interface (UPI) and cardpayment network RuPay inother countries.

“NIPL is tasked with theresponsibility of exportingNPCI’s indigenously devel-oped offerings and technolog-ical acumen to foreign mar-kets, thereby revolutionizingthe global payments land-scape. The primary focus ofNIPL would be internationali-zation of RuPay and UPI, alongwith a few more offerings ofNPCI,” according to an officialstatement.

UPI and RuPay already havea presence in Singapore andthe UAE. The growing popu-larity of UPI can be attributedto its simple, safe, cost-effec-tive, and mobile-based pay-ment system. UPI paymentsgrew 9% sequentially, clocking1.49 billion transactions inJuly, to hit yet another highsince its launch four years ago.

“NPCI has achieved the pin-nacle of success at developingan exemplary robust paymentssystem that is cost-effective,secure, convenient and instan-taneous. Several nations havedisplayed an inclination forestablishing a ‘real time pay-ment system’ or ‘domesticcard scheme’ inspired by theexemplary innovations byNPCI in the country,” accord-ing to the statement.

“We are glad to launch oursubsidiary, NIPL, to take ourunique payment system toglobal markets. It is also a mat-ter of pride for NPCI that sev-eral countries in Asia, Africaand the Middle East have dis-played interest towards repli-cating our model in their ownnations,” said Dilip Asbe, man-aging director and chief exec-utive, NPCI.
