TheD90Plusisideallysuitedforapplicationoncircuitswherefastfaultdetectionandsmallbreakerfailuremarginarerequired.TheD90Plusallowstransmissionlimitstobe maintained or even increased whilerespecting the transient stability limitsofthepowersystem.
D90Plus Sub-cycle Distance Protection
TheD90Plussub-cycledistancealgorithmemploys a combination of energy-basedintegrator/comparators and high-speedphasecomparatorstodetermineifafaultisinternalorexternal.
The energy integrator algorithm usesboth themagnitudeof theoperatingandpolarizing signals as well as the relativephase information to provide fast, secureoperation for obvious internal faults. Thehigh-speed phase comparators examinetheangularrelationshipbetweenoperatingand polarizing signals independent ofmagnitude to provide greater security inthepresenceofCCVTtransients.Forfaultswith low SIR or close-in high magnitudefaults, the D90Plus can provide trip timesunder½cycleforphase-phasefaultsandbetween ½ to ¾ of a cycle for groundfaults.
Capacitive Coupled Voltage Transformer Transient Filter
Transients generated by CapacitiveCoupledVoltageTransformers(CCVT)tendto have relatively significant magnitudesand long durations. The impact of thesetransientsisparticularlypronouncedwhenprotecting transmission lines where theSource Impedance Ratio (SIR), the ratiobetweenthesystemequivalentimpedanceand the relay reach impedance, is large.The voltage signals are crucial for properoperation of a distance element, butbecomesignificantlydistortedbytransientcomponents that are generated but theCCVT.Thispresentsasignificantchallengeparticularly for fast impedanceprotectionalgorithms.
Generally, CCVT transients will causethe magnitude of the voltage signal tobe underestimated, causing distanceelements to overreach. Most relays

detect CCVT transients under high SIRand incorporate an intentional operatingdelay on the distance elements to ride-through the period with CCVT transients.Dynamically reducing the reach of thedistance elements to prevent them fromoverreaching is another strategy to copewithCCVTtransients.
The D90Plus introduces a true digitalfilter into the voltage signal path thatremoves distortions generated by theCCVT, resulting in a signal that is amoreaccurate reproduction of the powersystem voltage. The D90Plus is then ableto provide sub-cycle distance protectioninthepresenceofCCVTtransients,withoutaddingintentionaldelaysorreducingfaultcoverage.TheD90Plussub-cycledistancealgorithmissecureandsufficientlyfastforawide rangeof power system scenarios.The CCVT filter increases the speed ofoperationoftheD90Plusforanevenwiderrangeofcontingencies.
As with all filters, the D90Plus CCVT filterneedstobetunedtoaspecificapplication,so that the behaviour of the CCVT ischaracterized and reduced to 3 criticalparameters that become settings for therelay.

Fast Breaker Failure reset
Withstabilitylimitsshrinking,theabilitytoachievefastbreakerfailureresettingtimesbecomes more challenging to achieve.When the total worst-case clearing timeincludingbreakerfailurestartstoapproach10-12cycles,oftenthereislittlemorethan1 cycle margin left to allow for breakerfailureprotectionstoreset.
The D90Plus provides fully independentbreaker failure protection for breaker-and-a-halforringbusarrangementswithconsistentsub-cycleresettingtimes(5/8ofapowersystemcycle),allowingforshortercritical clearing times and increased lineloading.

Series-Compensated Lines
The D90Plus provides enhanced stabilityand security by employing an adaptivedistance reach control to cope with theoverreaching and sub-synchronousoscillationswhenappliedto,orinthevicinityof, series compensated lines. Dependingon theneedsof theapplication, the relaycan be programmed to dynamically beself-polarized or use memory voltage forpolarizationforadditionalsecurity.
