Frank and Lois Wuluman live in a wukastle and drive a wukar, wubarbecue on weekends and love to howl on a three full-

moon night. You see, Frank and Lois Wuluman are Wulumans, those not-so-scary beasts that live in Wululand. One day, the

couple discovers an infant girl left on their doorstep. Theyinstantly fall in love with her and adopt her. Everything is

perfect about the child except for one itsy, bitsy problem.

Lily is a Zobeing, the mortal enemies of the Wulumans. Longago, the Wululanders and Zobeings were friends. They all

had something they needed from one another: theWululanders had wuludirt and the Zobeings had bluzulu seeds.

But now they’ve been waging war for centuries, but they can’t

remember how or why they became such mortal enemies.Into this world filled with intolerance and ignorance comes

Lily, a child of both cultures, who, through imagination andoptimism, helps create a healing sanctuary out of the rubble

of war. Lily plants a garden- the first garden to be seen incenturies—where broken toys grow into beautiful plants and

trees of memory. An inspiring and timely allegory about a

child who brings hope to troubled times.

Have you ever

been to a live

 performance

before? What did

 you like about it?

What is thedifference

between seeing a

live performance

and watching a

show on T.V.?

Purposes of Theatre

To entertain

To teach about

other people,

 places, andculture

To make us think

about other

beliefs, ideas, and

concepts

SOCIAL

SCIENCE    Some countries have been at war for centuries.

The play is a story about two different types of people at war,

known as the Zobeings and the Wulumans. Many years ago

these two groups of people were friends, each sharing what

they had to make life better for everyone. The Wulumans had

wuludirt  and the Zobeings had bluzulu  seeds. With the dirt

and the seeds, the Wulumans and the Zobeings could grow

beautiful gardens. But that was long ago; so long ago that no

one can remember the day when they were all friends or

what they are now fighting about. What is going on todaythat people are still fighting over, something that happened

many, many years ago? What do you think they should do?

Should we look into why the trouble started in the first place?

Then, evaluate whether it is even relevant today?

How would you feel if nobody liked you?

Lily’s parents are Wulumans , but Lily is a Zobeing.

The Wuluman clan did not want Lily to live in their

community because she was not like them—she was

like their enemy. The Zobeings did not want Lily to

live amongst them either, because she acted and

sounded like a Wuluman , and reminded them of

their enemies. So Lily and her mother were forced to

live in the Land of Rubble, a place where the

Unwanted live. What do you think about makingsome people (who are different than you) leave your

community and live in an ugly, broken place (like the

land of rubble in the play)?

Most creatures live by day, but some

come out only at n ight .

In the play, the Zobeings  are plant-like

creatures that are diurnal, meaning they are

active during the day. The Wuluman’s are

animal-like creatures that are nocturnal whichmeans they are active during the night. The

sunlight is too bright and hot for them. Whatother animals like to come out only during the

night? Are humans diurnal or nocturnal? Why?

What features do nocturnal animals have that

help them survive in the dark?

The planet Earth has one moon.

Do all planets have moons?

Our solar system  actually has 170 moonsthat orbit the eight planets in our solar

system and 1 dwarf planet, Pluto. The

planet in the play has three moons. What

might the sky look like from a planet thathas three moons?

What do wolves like to do when there is a

full moon? They howl at the moon.

What do Roses, Ladybugsand Aphids have in

common?

Aphids  are tiny insects that love to suck the juice from plants, especially

roses. Roses  are exceptionally sensitive plants, so sensitive that

aphids  can cut through the tissue ofthe stems and leaves where plant

diseases can then enter and kill the

rose. Ladybugs  love to eat aphids .Therefore roses  like to have

Ladybugs  eat the aphids  from theirleaves and stems.

Aphids  are parasites  for roses.

Puppetry

In this show you will see many types of puppets. Puppets are wonderful to use in playsbecause they help create the story and appeal to our imagination!

Puppet Project

Some puppets in this show mimic or look similar to the actors that are playing them.Give each student a paper lunch sack and some art supplies including glue, pipecleaners, markers, construction paper etc., and have them make a puppet ofthemselves trying to match their puppets as closely to how they look as possible(clothing, facial expressions, etc.)

OR

Use same craft supplies and have students make puppets of characters from the showand have them act out the following scenes from the play with a partner and discusstheir thoughts on the scenes (what they think it means, why is it important, etc.)

Skit 1

MAMA WULUMAN: We Wulumans believe that everything has a soul.

LILY: Do teddy bears and broken toys have souls?

MAMA WULUMAN: If someone thought to create it, shaped it by their loving hands, then itmust have a part of their soul too, don’t you think?

Skit 2

LILY: I can’t go back there, Papa.

PAPA WULUMAN: Why not?

LILY: Because everything I love goes kaboom.

PAPA WULUMAN: From up here I can see your garden. It shouldn’t exist but it does. Youtook your kaboom and turned it into something beautiful.

LILY: But, Papa, all I see are children hiding in rubble afraid to play and laugh.

PAPA WULUMAN: Your garden is a beginning and isn’t that what hope is?

Music represents

Lily’s tears.

How does music influence

your emotions?

Have you ever heard

music that made you

feel happy or sad?

The next time you watch

a T.V. show, listen to

the music playing in

the background. How

does it contribute to

the performance? Does

it affect your mood?

Was this performance a

musical?

What makes a theatre

performance a musical?

Musical theatre combines

song (singing), acting and

dance.

What are some examples ofmusicals you may have

seen?

Choreographer: someone who composes dance sequences

If you were asked to choreograph a dance to the music

of a performance, what would your music sound like for

happy, sad, scary or even funny parts of the story?

What would your dance motions look like?

The Basics of Making Pinwheels

To make a pinwheel, cut a piece of paper 4 inches square. Number thecorners 1, 2, 3, and 4 as seen in figure 1. Join corners I and 3 and corners 2and 4 with dotted lines. Then draw an X as shown in Fig. 2. Color each

section, repeat the colors on the opposite side of the paper, as in Fig. 3.Now cut along the dotted lines up to the X at the center of the paper. Then take corner I and lay it over the center. Place corner 2 on top ofcorner I. Then put corner 3 on top of corner 2, and corner 4 on top ofcorner 3. Push a pin through all the corners and into the top of a lollipopstick or a straw.. Hold your pinwheel against the wind. It will spin. Seewww.pinwheelsforprevention.org (a Prevent Child Abuse website).

LET’S MAKE A CASTLE!

In Lily Plants a Garden you see a castle. Why not make your own?

Pirate or Princess Preschool Castle

Ziggity Zoom's castle crafts are ideal for younger children, particularlypreschoolers. Materials include four toilet paper rolls, a plastic straw, a paperflag, scissors, black or pink paint and four index-card-sized pieces of cardboard.Assemble the materials into a castle shape by cutting slits in the toilet paper rolltowers and sliding in the cardboard walls. Some preschool children may be ableto assist with assembly, but those who can't, will enjoy painting the castle anddecorating it with princess jewels or pirate stickers. This craft takes about 45minutes to one hour to complete.
