Lesson 1

ADAM — THE FIRST MAN

5

LESSON TEXT: Genesis 1:19, 26-28; Genesis 3:1-19; Genesis 5:1-5

INTRODUCTION: Men make history. Men direct the course of history. Biography is the real history of man. Without the story of life in the Bible, it would be much smaller. On the last day of creation, God created man out of the dust of the earth. He made man in His own image and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. Man was created by God and did not evolve as some would have us to believe. Man was created a triune being; body, soul, and spirit. His main reason for being brought into existence was to glorify God and have fellowship with Him personally. Adam lived 930 years. 1. ADAM

A. Made of the dust of the earth (Gen. 2:7)

B. Placed in the beautiful garden of Eden to care for and enjoy (Gen 2:8-15)

C. Obeyed his wife rather than God and yielded to temptation (Gen. 3:6, I Tim. 2:14)

1) Adam blamed God and his wife for his sin and trouble (Gen. 3:12). 2) Adam broke his fellowship with God (Isaiah 59:1-2). 3) Just as deadly and separating today as it was in the Garden of Eden

2. RESULT OF ADAM’S REBELLION AGAINST GOD

A. Driven from the Garden (Gen. 3:23-24) B. They were afraid of God—the birth of fear (Gen. 3:10).

Adam — The First Man Lesson 1

6

C. A man-made covering for sin invented—fig leaves (Gen. 3:7) D. Suffering—an animal slain to provide a covering—a type of Christ (Gen. 3:21) E. Sorrow, sickness, death (I Cor. 15:21-22) F. The woman brings forth children in sorrow and she is in subjection to her

husband (Gen. 3:16). G. The ground cursed for man’s sake. He labors and eats bread by the sweat of his

brow. Genesis 3:17, And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

H. Return to dust

Genesis 3:15, And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

CONCLUSION: When Adam and Eve fell, they lost everything, including the glory of God in which they were clothed. Adam sold out to the devil, so Christ bought us again with His own blood. As in Adam all die, so in Christ all are made alive. The trail of the serpent is seen from Genesis to Revelation, but so is the scarlet line. Through Christ we will gain all we lost.

ABEL — THE FIRST MARTYR

LESSON TEXT: Genesis 4:1-10 INTRODUCTION: In Genesis we have the first promise of a Redeemer. Genesis 3:15, And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. God said that through the seed of the woman, Satan will be destroyed. The devil, therefore, tried to destroy the seed of the woman by destroying Abel and making Cain a murderer, thus eliminating him as a Redeemer. Satan tried to keep the Word of God from coming to pass. God has declared, Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away (Matthew 24:35). 1. THE TWO BROTHERS

A. Abel — Type of true Christians

1) True worshipper 2) Faithful in spite of opposition 3) His godly life was a rebuke to the wicked. 4) He was hated—the first man to die. 5) Hebrews 11:4, . . . he being dead yet speaketh.

B. Cain — Unrepentant sinner

1) Jealousy Genesis 4:5, But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

ENOCH — WALKED WITH GOD

9

LESSON TEXT: Genesis 5:18-24 INTRODUCTION: Adam, federal head of the human race, deliberately and defiantly sinned against the revealed will and purpose of God. We could only expect that his offspring would do likewise. Inevitably a dark cloud of sin, sorrow and sickness hovered over humanity as a result of this sin. Out of this abyss of antediluvian darkness came a person with a beautiful God-like character named Enoch. Enoch’s name means “teacher.” 1. ENOCH WAS A MAN OF POTENTIAL FAITH

A. God had not directly spoken to man since the Garden of Eden, yet Enoch believed that God would speak to him.

B. In a world of great sin, he believed that he could live a good life.

2. ENOCH WAS A PROPHET

A. Enoch prophesied of the Lord’s coming with 10,000 of His saints.

Jude 14, And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

B. He named his son Methuselah, which means “Judgment comes at his death.”

Genesis 5:25-26, And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech: v. 26, And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters:

Enoch — Walked With God Lesson 3

10

3. ENOCH WALKED WITH GOD

A. He was alone in his quest for God. It isolated him from modern society. It made him unpopular.

B. Enoch pleased God.

Hebrews 11:5, By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

The first miracle after the calamity of Eden was the translation of Enoch. He was 365 years old (victory for each day of the year).

4. ENOCH IS A TYPE OF THE BRIDE OF CHRIST

A. He lived in an age of apostasy. B. He was personally separated from the wickedness of his age. C. He prophesied of Christ’s coming.

Jude 14, And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

D. He foretold coming judgment—the flood. He escaped that period of

Tribulation. CONCLUSION:

A. Enoch found God—he walked with Him. B. God found Enoch—He translated him. C. We, too, as we find God and walk by faith with Him, someday shall be caught

up to meet Him in the air and so shall we ever be with the Lord in His glorious presence.

D. I Thessalonians 4:16-17, For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with

a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: v. 17, Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

13

LESSON TEXT: Genesis 12:1-5; 13:1-12; 17:1-8; 18:22-33 1. THE BACKGROUND OF ABRAHAM’S LIFE

A. His country (Chaldea) was highly civilized, but godless (Genesis 11:4, 8, 9). B. His people, despite their culture, were idol worshippers. They served other gods

(Joshua 24:2). Both his environment and his heredity were contrary to Abraham’s faith. He was not the product of his day.

2. THE TURNING POINT IN ABRAHAM’S LIFE

A. The call of God

1) God revealed Himself to Abraham (Acts 7:2). 2) God called Abraham to separation.

Acts 7:3, And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall show thee. Genesis 12:1, Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee:

Lesson 6

JACOB — A NEW NAME

15

LESSON TEXT: Genesis 25:19-34 INTRODUCTION: Jacob was a new name in history. He was also considered the most popular man in history. Isaac, who was Jacob’s father and Abraham’s son, is now getting old and is practically blind. Acting as prophet-priest of the family, he decides to bestow a blessing upon Esau, his elder son and his favorite. However, before the boys were born, God had said the elder would serve the younger. The elder son, by precedence of birth, was the heir to the birthright, which was a spiritual authority, and this made him prophet-priest to the family upon the death of his father. Great respect was paid to him in the household and he also received a double portion of his father’s property. The relationship between the brothers, Jacob and Esau, should have been intimate and loving for they were twins. These two men, however, were born struggling, an indication of the rest of their lives. 1. ISAAC ASKED GOD FOR CHILDREN.

A. Isaac and Rebekah had been married 20 years and were without children. Isaac was 40 when he married. He was now 60 (Genesis 25:20-26).

1) Isaac interceded with God on behalf of Rebekah, his wife (Genesis 25:21) 2) Isaac received a miraculous answer: twins were born (Genesis 25:23-24). 3) Differences between the twins 4) Esau, a hunter, unconcerned regarding his spiritual birthright, was a hairy

man who had no inclination to cherish spiritual values.

Page 17: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · STUDY GUIDE LLESTER SUMRALL TEACHING SERIES GREAT PEOPLE OF HISTORY Lesson 2 ABEL — THE FIRST MARTYR 7 LESSON TEXT: Genesis

Jacob — A New Name Lesson 6

16

5) Jacob, a shepherd and concerned with the greatness of the family birthright, desired the birthright. He knew that it belonged to Esau, though only by a few minutes. Jacob bargained to buy the birthright from Esau for a bowl of soup. Jacob’s method of obtaining a spiritual birthright was wrong, but his desire was commendable. He was seeking God’s power (Genesis 25:29-34).

2. JACOB AND REBEKAH, HIS MOTHER, WENT AHEAD OF GOD.

A. Isaac, the father, desired to bless Esau, his first-born (Genesis 27:1-4). B. While Esau was hunting for deer, Jacob and Rebekah were busy (Genesis 27:5-

29). C. Lesser blessing left for Esau (Genesis 27:35) D. Isaac did not die as he expected. He lived another 50 years (Genesis 28:5).

3. JACOB’S FIRST VISIT TO BETHEL

A. Genesis 28:10-22 B. Wandering from home, his birthright blessing of little comfort (Genesis 28:7) C. A curse of sin is the destruction of home-life without the blessings and

fellowship of God (Genesis 28:16). D. The beginning of growth in grace: a vow to God (Genesis 28:20)

4. JACOB REAPED WHAT HE SOWED.

A. It is a law of God and can be depended upon (Galatians 6:7). B. Jacob deceived his father and he was later deceived by his Uncle Laban

(Genesis 27:16; 29:25). C. Jacob told a lie to his father and his sons later lied to him (Genesis 27:24;

37:32). D. Jacob and his mother sinned together. After leaving home, Jacob never saw his

mother again.

5. JACOB MET JEHOVAH GOD WHEN ALONE.

A. Jacob first met God at a place he named “Bethel.” B. Next he met God at Peniel (Genesis 32:30).

Page 18: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · STUDY GUIDE LLESTER SUMRALL TEACHING SERIES GREAT PEOPLE OF HISTORY Lesson 2 ABEL — THE FIRST MARTYR 7 LESSON TEXT: Genesis

Jacob — A New Name Lesson 6

17

C. At Peniel, Jacob made a full confession and had his name changed (Genesis 32:28).

CONCLUSION: You have a birthright today. It is salvation. It is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, healing for the body, the hope of the coming Lord, of Heaven, and many, many more spiritual blessings. Our soul’s welfare depends on how we value it. We may cherish it and be saved and blessed, or we may despise it and lose the blessing of God and our souls for all eternity.

Lesson 7

JOSEPH — CRADLE TO GRAVE

19

LESSON TEXT: Genesis 37:3-11 INTRODUCTION: Of the twelve sons of Jacob, Joseph was loved the most because he was the son of Jacob’s old age and of Rachel, Jacob’s favorite wife. Because of this, he was hated by his brethren who mistreated him. Joseph’s life speaks to us of faithfulness to God, in waiting and prayer. Joseph was ready to obey and trust God in good circumstances or bad. Although his life stands before us as a fine example, we must remember that Joseph was very human. 1. EARLY LIFE

A. Jealous brothers

Genesis 37:11, And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

B. Joseph was Jacob’s favorite.

Genesis 37:3, Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

C. Joseph—brought the evil report of his brothers (Genesis 37:2).

2. SOLD TO ISHMAELITES

A. Jacob reaps his deceitfulness. Sons lead him to believe Joseph had been killed (Genesis 37:31-32).

Joseph — Cradle To Grave Lesson 7

20

B. Joseph waits on God in captivity; continues to do his best. Genesis 39:2, And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

3. JOSEPH IN EGYPT

A. Servant in Potiphar’s house (Genesis 39:1) B. Falsely accused, imprisoned

Genesis 39:20, And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.

C. Interpret’s dreams. Gives glory to God (Genesis 40:8) D. Joseph waits faithfully and serves well (Genesis 40:23).

4. JOSEPH PUT INTO PHARAOH’S SERVICE

A. Interprets dreams

Genesis 41:28-32, This is the thing which I have spoken unto Pharaoh: What God is about to do he showeth unto Pharaoh. v. 29, Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt: v. 30, And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land; v. 31, And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous. v. 32, And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

B. Manages crops and stores grain for the famine (Genesis 41:48) C. Brothers come to him for grain (Genesis 42:3) D. Dream comes true. His brothers bow before him.

Genesis 42:6, And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

E. Joseph repays evil with good. Puts money and grain in sacks (Genesis 42:25)

F. Reunion with Jacob

Genesis 46:29, And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.

CONCLUSION: Joseph’s patience in undergoing hardship and his loyalty to righteousness made him a worthy servant of God. What better indication of strength of character could be given? How often it is true that men who were bold in their confidence during prosperity become hopelessly morose and bitter in adversity and depression.

Lesson 9

JOSHUA — A NATION-BUILDER

27

LESSON TEXT: Exodus 17:8-13 INTRODUCTION: Joshua was born in Egypt during Israel’s bondage and was probably about 40 years old when they departed. The first time we hear of him is at the battle of Rephidim where he led Israel to victory. This incident revealed that he was a warrior and that he was the man needed to conduct the conquest of Canaan. He was already in training. He was Moses’ closest follower and accompanied Moses to some of his most sacred appointments. This helped prepare him for the office which Moses left at his death. 1. CHARACTERISTICS OF JOSHUA

A. Faith (Numbers 14:6-8) B. Total Consecration (Numbers 32:12) C. Godly Reverence (Joshua 5:14) D. Courage (Joshua 10:25) E. Obedience (Joshua 11:15) F. Godly decision (Joshua 24:15)

2. TRAINING FOR THE FUTURE

A. Led Israel to victory (Exodus 17:8-17) B. Gave true and good report of Canaan (Numbers 13:30)

Page 29: STUDY GUIDE - Dr. Sumrall's Legacy Collection of Works · STUDY GUIDE LLESTER SUMRALL TEACHING SERIES GREAT PEOPLE OF HISTORY Lesson 2 ABEL — THE FIRST MARTYR 7 LESSON TEXT: Genesis

Joshua — A Nation-Builder Lesson 9

28

C. Constant companion of Moses (Exodus 24:13; 33:11)

3. THE SUCCESSOR OF MOSES

A. Called and commissioned of God (Joshua 1:1-3) B. Filled with a spirit of wisdom. Became a man of power and fine military

commander (Deuteronomy 34:9)

C. Moses, who represents the law, led the people to the border of Canaan. Joshua, who represents Christ, led them in their inheritance.

4. CONSIDERATE AND APPRECIATIVE

A. Although he was a general, yet he remembered a poor sinner woman who wanted to be saved (Joshua 6:17).

B. He set up a memorial consisting of 12 stones taken from the Jordan. This would

be a memorial of God’s mighty deliverance (Joshua 4:9).

5. VICTORIOUS THROUGH FAITH

A. Crossed Jordan when banks were overflowing (Joshua 3:15). B. Jericho fell without any weapons (Joshua 6:20). C. Sun stood still at his command (Joshua 10:12-13). D. Conquered Canaan with the help of God (Joshua 10; 12; 11:23)

CONCLUSION: Joshua began in faith, lived in faith, and closed his life with faith. His last charge to his people was to “fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth” and to put away other gods. Joshua 24:14, Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. He set a God-like example to his people by saying, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” By this we learn he had command of his own household. Joshua died at the age of 110 years. Joshua was one of the great military heroes and executives of all times. The power of God was manifested in a life surrendered to Him. No one knew better than Joshua the difficult task of succeeding Moses. But Joshua was not following Moses; he was following God, and he was prepared to look to Him for all provision and guidance. Joshua was never disappointed in his trust.

Lesson 10

RAHAB — FROM HARLOT TO ROYAL FAMILY

29

LESSON TEXT: Joshua 2:1-24 INTRODUCTION: Rahab was an unlikely subject for the Faith Hall of Fame. Rahab was a heathen. She was a harlot, a liar, and a traitor to her people. Rahab believed in what faith could do, and when she adopted a pure faith, she began a pure life. Three times the New Testament mentions Rahab. Considering that it does not mention many others from the Old Testament, this seems worthy of notice. Rahab is one of the women in the lineage of Christ, producing a messiah. Rahab teaches us anyone can be saved—no matter whom; the plan is the same, and Jesus is the remedy for all. 1. HER STORY

A. She lived in Jericho and was a harlot.

Joshua 2:1, And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

B. She received and hid two spies.

Joshua 2:4, And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:

30

C. She made a covenant with the spies.

Joshua 2:12, Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have showed you kindness, that ye will also show kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token:

D. Rahab and her household were saved from destruction.

Joshua 6:23, And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.

E. Married Salmon

Ruth 4:21, And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, Matthew 1:5, And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

2. RAHAB TEACHES US A LESSON ON FAITH.

A. She spoke confidently of things not seen.

Joshua 2:9, And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

B. Believed in God

Joshua 2:11, And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

C. Rahab asked for mercy for herself and her family.

Joshua 2:12, Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have showed you kindness, that ye will also show kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token:

3. HOW DID RAHAB OBTAIN THIS FAITH?

A. The evidence was given. She heard about Egypt and had considered it.

Joshua 2:10, For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

Rahab — From Harlot To Royal Family Lesson 10

31

B. We get faith the same way.

John 20:30-31, And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: v. 31, But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Romans 10:17, So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

4. THE RED STRING — JOSHUA 2:15-22

This may be of significance. Perhaps red was chosen because it was easily seen. Red speaks to us of the blood of Jesus and salvation. The blood of Jesus saves by faith.

SAMSON — THE STRONG LOSER

33

LESSON TEXT: Judges 13:11-25 INTRODUCTION: The story of Samson is a popular story, though a bit of a puzzle. Should we put Samson with the successes or failures? 1. SAMSON’S AMAZING EXPLOITS

A. Killed a young lion like a kid

B. Slew 1,000 men with the jawbone of an ass (Judges 15:15) C. Carried away the city gates

Judges 16:3, And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron.

D. Destroyed temple of Dagon (Judges 16:28-29)

Samson — The Strong Loser Lesson 11

34

2. SAMSON’S BACKGROUND

A. Manoah’s wife was barren; God promised a son.

Judges 13:3, And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.

B. Separation by birth

Numbers 6:5, All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.

3. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SAMSON TO ISRAEL

A. Strength was God-given (Zechariah 4:6)

1) Ordinary man (Judges 13:24) 2) Strength led Samson from God (Judges 14:1)

B. Israel — a small nation

1) Israel could not get by on its own initiative and power; it was very

dependent upon God. 2) Israel succeeded with God and failed without Him.

4. SAMSON’S MARRIAGE: THE WORLD

A. Saw a woman that pleased him

Judges 14:3, Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.

1) Based on physical appearance

Judges 14:2, And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.

2) Did not stop to think of consequences

B. Samson consulted with his parents but did not listen to them.

Samson — The Strong Loser Lesson 11

35

C. Things against success of this marriage:

1) Different races: Jew/Philistine 2) Different religions: God/Dagon 3) Different ideals: Freedom/Dominance

5. THE HARLOT OF GAZA AND DELILAH

A. Sought a woman of low class, without principles B. Betrayed by Delilah C. Became a prisoner: eyes put out, hair grows back D. Humiliated at a pagan feast, Samson prays to God and is heard. He dies with his

enemies. CONCLUSION: There are many lessons to be learned from this unique life. He may serve as a warning in many respects, but may also be an encouragement to others. His life shows that all are able to repent and come back to God.

Samuel — Born To Be A Prophet Lesson 12

38

v. 8, And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. v. 9, Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. v. 10, And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. v. 20, And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.

3. SAMUEL AS JUDGE

A. Samuel told people to return to the Lord, forsaking their idols and false gods; He sought harmony and unity (I Samuel 7:3-13).

B. Samuel as intercessor sacrifices lamb; God, as ever, is faithful to answer

(I Samuel 3:9).

C. Faithful to thank God and praise Him for answered prayer, Samuel set up a stone, Ebenezer, “hitherto hath the Lord helped us” (I Samuel 7:12).

4. SAMUEL INAUGURATES ISRAEL’S FIRST KING.

SAUL — THE TALL PRINCE

39

LESSON TEXT: I Samuel 9:1-2

INTRODUCTION: God often uses seemingly insignificant events to accomplish His will for His glory. Saul was looking for lost asses and found a throne! God had already spoken to Samuel, and when Saul appeared, God spoke again and pointed him out as the one who would reign over Israel. He reigned for 32 years.

1. SAUL DESIGNATED AS KING OF ISRAEL

A. Saul was anointed with the symbols of oil and a kiss (I Samuel 10:1). B. Proclaimed King, the lot guided by God C. There were divided reactions.

I Samuel 10:26-27, And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched. v. 27, But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.

D. Saul provided dynamite leadership.

I Samuel 11:6-7, And the spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. v. 7, And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

2. THEN SAUL BECAME DRUNK ON POWER.

A. Saul began to disregard the warnings and counsel of God’s man, Samuel.

I Samuel 15:12, And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.

When Saul disregarded his mentor, He also lost his relationship with God.

B. Saul took authority God had not given to him (I Samuel 15:13). C. Saul became irresponsible and hypocritical (I Samuel 15:14). D. Saul tried to cover up his own wrong-doings with acts which seemed very

religious. 3. THE GRAVITY OF DISOBEDIENCE

A. Saul followed the way of insubordination and rebellion (I Samuel 15:18-19). B. Bowed to pride and greed (I Samuel 15:20) C. He tried to blame it on the people (I Samuel 15:21).

4. THE PENALTY OF SAUL’S TRANSGRESSION

A. And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not (I Samuel 28:6).

B. Samuel, his advisor, had died (I Samuel 25:1). C. God had rejected Saul.

I Samuel 28:6, And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

D. David, his son-in-law, won many battles causing Saul to be jealous. E. Saul turned to witches for guidance.

I Samuel 28:7, Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.

CONCLUSION: In Saul’s life, one sin led to another. Then, when he finally realized he needed help, he went to the wrong source for it. Saul committed suicide in his desperate hour of military defeat (I Samuel 31:1-6). Jesus waits to receive us and forgive our faults.

3. GOD GAVE WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE TO THE FOUR

HEBREW CHILDREN.

Daniel 1:17, As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

6. DANIEL CHALLENGED

King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that he could not remember. He demanded his wise men to help him, but they could neither tell the dream nor give an interpretation (Daniel 2:5, 10, 11).

7. GOD SHOWS DANIEL THE DREAM AND HE GIVES THE

INTERPRETATION.

Daniel 2:19, Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

8. THE KING’S DREAM DEPICTED COMING EMPIRES.

The metallic image (Daniel 2:38-43) 9. CHRIST TO HAVE ULTIMATE REIGN

CONCLUSION: Solomon began his kingship by praying for wisdom and honoring God. Although he had fine qualities of the mind and a certain amount of spirituality, these broke down under success and luxurious living. God’s favor is found not in earthly gifts but in obedience.

DAVID — A LEGEND IN HIS OWN TIME

51

LESSON TEXT: Psalm 37:1 INTRODUCTION: David was anointed king by Samuel the prophet when he was 17 years old. David was 30 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 40 years. He ruled Judah for 7 years and all Israel for 33 years. David had to wait 13 years for the fulfillment of God’s promise to be king of Israel, when all 12 tribes recognized David as king. His official coronation was in Hebron. God is not slow in fulfilling His promises. 1. DAVID DISCOVERED

A. David was the youngest and least of Jesse’s seven sons, a little nobody in his family.

I Samuel 16:11, And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.

B. David was amazed when the great prophet Samuel anointed him king.

I Samuel 16:12-13, And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. v. 13, Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

2. DAVID RECOMMENDED TO THE KING

I Samuel 16:18, Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.

3. DAVID BECAME A LEGEND.

A. Everybody was talking about David, the youngest son of Jesse of Bethlehem.

I Samuel 17:34, 37, And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: v. 37, David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

B. David challenged the Philistine champion Goliath the Giant.

I Samuel 17:48, And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

4. DAVID BECAME KING OVER JUDAH AT 35 YEARS OF AGE

II Samuel 2:4; 5:4-5 5. DAVID’S RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

Psalm 23:1-6, The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. v. 2, He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. v. 3, He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. v. 4, Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. v. 5, Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. v. 6, Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

HEZEKIAH — THE KING WITH 4 CRISES

55

LESSON TEXT: II Kings 18:1-12 INTRODUCTION: God created man not to just contemplate, but to act. Theorists are plentiful, but men of action are rare. The wise man is he that performs the will of God. Hezekiah was such a man: he turned to God in the four crises in his life. 1. CRISIS OF CHOICE

A. Hezekiah did that which was right in the sight of God.

II Kings 18:3, And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.

B. He forsook the idols of his father and purged the kingdom from idolatry

(II Chronicles 28:24-25; II Kings 18:4).

C. He was not guided by what others thought. D. Hezekiah removed the high places, broke the images, and cut down the groves.

II Kings 18:4, He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brazen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.

E. He caused “all uncleanness” to be cast out of the temple and all the vessels to

be replaced.

Hezekiah — The King With 4 Crises Lesson 17

56

F. The things which dishonored God were broken.

II Kings 18:4, He . . . brake in pieces the brazen serpent . . . and he called it Nehushtan.

1) A silver cross is not any better than a brazen serpent as an object of

worship. Sin is sin. Money, pleasure, or worldly honor are idols.

G. Hezekiah enjoyed success.

1) There can be no failure when the Lord is with us.

II Kings 18:7, And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

2) All godless prosperity is wood, hay, or stubble. True success is gained

through faith in God. 2. CRISIS OF MILITARY INVASION

A. Showed the right kind of independence (II Chronicles 32:20)

1) Hezekiah rebelled against the king of Assyria and served him not (II Chronicles 32:7).

2) He broke the yoke of Assyria and the angel of the Lord smote 185,000 Assyrians (II Chronicles 32:20-21; II Kings 19:35).

B. The man who is most dependent on God is the man that is most independent of

man (II Chronicles 32:20-21). C. Hezekiah made a tunnel to divert the only source of water the Assyrian army

had when it came to attack. The tunnel was 1700 feet long and can still be entered into today.

3. CRISIS OF ILLNESS

A. Hezekiah was sick unto death (Isaiah 38:1). B. Isaiah told him to set his house in order (Isaiah 38:1). C. Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed (Isaiah 38:2). D. God told Isaiah He had heard Hezekiah’s prayer and saw his tears, and He

would give him 15 more years.

4. CRISIS OF PROSPERITY

A. King of Babylon sent presents (Isaiah 39:1) B. Hezekiah showed them his abundance of precious things; gold, silver, and

treasures (Isaiah 39:2). C. God was highly displeased with his boastfulness (Isaiah 39:5-7).

CONCLUSION: Are there “places” or “images” in our hearts or homes that occupy a higher position in our esteem than the things of God? Put things “in their right place.” Matthew 6:33, But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

LESSON TEXT: Nehemiah 1:11; 4

INTRODUCTION: Nehemiah was a child of captivity. He was taken from his native Israel to Persia by the Persian army. Nehemiah was advanced to the high and trusted position of cup-bearer to Cyrus the emperor. Nehemiah tasted his food for poisoning. He stood near as a protector and maybe an advisor to His Highness the Emperor. He was well-adjusted as a foreigner. This amazing change of destiny came to Nehemiah with the arrival of a relative, Hanani, his brother, from Jerusalem.

1. NEHEMIAH DISTRESSED FOR JERUSALEM

A. Prays for rebuilding of Jerusalem — Nehemiah 1:5-11 B. Dared to stand before the king with a sad countenance

2. NEHEMIAH ENCOURAGES THE PEOPLE TO BUILD.

A. Personally viewed the true condition at night alone (Nehemiah 2:12-13) B. Testified of the hand of God upon him, and the King’s word

Nehemiah 2:18, Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

C. All the people had a mind to work.

3. SANBALLAT OPPOSES THE REBUILDING OF THE WALL

A. Laughed them to scorn (Nehemiah 2:19) B. Called in army of Samaritans (Nehemiah 4:2) C. Tried to compromise five times (Nehemiah 6:3) D. Tried to intimidate with false prophet

Nehemiah 6:12, And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

4. THE REVIVAL

A. The law read and feast of tabernacles restored

Nehemiah 8:8, So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

B. The people fast and repent.

Nehemiah 9:2, And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.

C. Dedicated walls to God

Nehemiah 12:27-47, v. 27, And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with singing, with cymbals, psalteries, and with harps.

v. 2, For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. v. 3, He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. v. 4, Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. v. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

4. ISAIAH HAD A VISION OF SALVATION.

Isaiah 55:1-6, v. 1, Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. v. 6, Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:

5. ISAIAH’S PROPHECIES FULFILLED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

D. A captive to Egypt

Jeremiah 43:5-7, But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, took all the remnant of Judah, that were returned from all nations, whither they had been driven, to dwell in the land of Judah; v. 6, Even men, and women, and children, and the king's daughters, and every person that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah. v. 7, So they came into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: thus came they even to Tahpanhes.

MARY MAGDALENE — SHE HAD 7 DEVILS

73

LESSON TEXT: John 20:16

INTRODUCTION: Mary was from the city of Magdala on the Sea of Galilee. This is how we have come to know here as “the Magdalene.” She was delivered of a very sinful life and many Bible scholars believe her to be the sinner who slipped into the banquet at Simon the Pharisee’s house. This cannot be proven, but we know for a fact that she was delivered and transformed into a wonderful and pure woman.

1. JESUS CAST SEVEN DEVILS OUT OF HER.

Luke 8:2, And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,

2. SHE HELPED SUPPORT JESUS’ MINISTRY FINANCIALLY.

Luke 8:3, And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.

3. SHE FOLLOWED JESUS TO THE CROSS.

John 19:25, Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

4. SHE WAS THE FIRST ONE TO THE TOMB.

A. John 20:1, The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

74

B. She waited to anoint the body of her Lord.

Mark 16:1, And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

C. She talked with an angel.

Mark 16:5-7, And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. v. 6, And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. v. 7, But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

D. She told Peter about the empty tomb.

John 20:2, Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

5. SHE WAS THE FIRST TO SEE THE RISEN LORD.

A. Mark 16:9, Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

B. She mistook Him for the gardener.

John 20:14-17, And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. v. 15, Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? B. Andrew found food.

Lesson 25

PETER — THE BIG MAN

81

LESSON TEXT: Acts 2:14-18 INTRODUCTION: Peter bears a close resemblance to many of us living today. He was impetuous, impatient, quick to speak, hasty in temper, and fearful in times of danger. Yet he became a great leader of the Christian Church. 1. PETER DOING THINGS FIRST

A. He preached a powerful sermon of history and prophecy at Pentecost (Acts 2). B. Peter, arrested by the religious authorities for preaching and healing, defied

them to do their worst. The priests, the captains of the temple, the Sadducees and the Scribes put him in jail (Acts 4:1, 4-14).

C. Peter received the first Gentile into the exclusive Jewish Christian Church.

Cornelius, a Roman in Caesarea and a captain of the Italian army, was devout and feared God. He gave alms and prayed always unto God. An angel appeared to him and said to send to Joppa for Simon Peter. Peter came and all who heard him accepted Christ and the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:1-48).

2. LOYALTY TO CHRIST IMPAIRED

A. The chief spokesman for Christ, he denied Jesus three times. He said, “I don’t know Him.”

Peter — The Big Man Lesson 25

82

B. Jesus charged Peter, “Feed my sheep.” He was saying to Peter, “You made a mistake, I forgive you. You are a living stone and your responsibility is to look after the disciples.”

John 21:15-17, So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. v. 16, He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. v. 17, He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

C. Peter followed Christ’s teaching regardless of sacrifice, persecution, or

hardship. 3. PERSECUTION AND DELIVERANCE

A. Herod decided to remove the shepherds so that the flock would be scattered.

Acts 12:1-3, Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. v. 2, And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. v. 3, And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

B. Prayer was made to the Lord of circumstances.

Acts 12:5, Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

C. What Jesus does is with supernatural intervention. If something is possible, He

expects us to complete it (Acts 12:6-10). D. When the angel left, Peter came to the sober realization of all that had happened

to him.

Acts 12:11, And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

Peter — The Big Man Lesson 25

83

CONCLUSION: How Christ had changed Peter! Now he was truly a rock, uncompromising, fearing nothing and no one. Peter was crucified with his head down by his request, thinking it too high an honor to die in the same posture as the Lord Jesus Christ.
