MIRACLES OF JESUS

INTRODUCTION:

The study of the miracles of Jesus is one of the most thrilling topics in all the Bible. Whilehere upon the earth, Jesus performed 35 miracles that are named and described in the Bible,in addition to His own resurrection.

READING:

John 10:32, 37-38, 41-42, Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed youfrom my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?

v. 37, If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.

v. 38, But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, andbelieve, that the Father is in me, and I in him.

v. 41, And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things thatJohn spake of this man were true.

v. 42, And many believed on him there.

1. WHY DID JESUS DO MIRACLES?

A. Jesus taught spiritual lessons through the miracles.

1) When He helped Peter bring in a miraculous catch of fish, He also taught thedisciples about the success they could have as fishers of men.

Luke 5:4-11, Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch outinto the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

v. 5, And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

v. 6, And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes:and their net brake.

Introduction

v. 7, And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both theships, so that they began to sink.

v. 8, When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart fromme; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

v. 9, For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of thefishes which they had taken:

v. 10, And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which werepartners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforththou shalt catch men.

v. 11, And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, andfollowed him.

2) When He healed the centurion’s servant, He also showed the Jews that theGentiles may have more faith than the religious Jews.

Matthew 8:5-12, And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there cameunto him a centurion, beseeching him,

v. 6, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievouslytormented.

v. 7, And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

v. 8, The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thoushouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shallbe healed.

v. 9, For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to thisman, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to myservant, Do this, and he doeth it.

v. 10, When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, VerilyI say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

v. 11, And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, andshall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom ofheaven.

v. 12, But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness:there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

3) When Jesus healed the man with the withered hand, He taught the observersconcerning the errors about the Sabbath.

Introduction

Matthew 12:10-14, And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days?that they might accuse him.

v. 11, And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shallhave one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay holdon it, and lift it out?

v. 12, How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to dowell on the sabbath days.

v. 13, Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched itforth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.

v. 14, Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how theymight destroy him.

B. He proved Himself as the Son of God through His miracles.

1) In His first sermon, Jesus declared Himself to be the anointed of God throughHis miracles.

Luke 4:18-19, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed meto preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted,to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, toset at liberty them that are bruised,

v. 19, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

2) His fame was spread through His miracle ministry.

Mark 1:23-28, And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit;and he cried out,

v. 24, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth?art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

v. 25, And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.

v. 26, And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice,he came out of him.

v. 27, And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned amongthemselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for withauthority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

v. 28, And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region roundabout Galilee.

Introduction

3) Jesus proved His identity to John the Baptist by miracles.

Matthew 11:2-6, Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ,he sent two of his disciples,

v.3, And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look foranother?

v. 4, Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those thingswhich ye do hear and see:

v. 5, The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospelpreached to them.

v. 6, And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

4) The miracles were an identification of God’s presence with Jesus.

Acts 10:38, How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost andwith power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressedof the devil; for God was with him.

5) The healing of the man born blind proved that Jesus was from God.

John 9:24-33, Then again called they the man that was blind, and said untohim, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.

v. 25, He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: onething I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

v. 26, Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thineeyes?

v. 27, He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear:wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?

v. 28, Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’disciples.

v. 29, We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know notfrom whence he is.

v. 30, The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellousthing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

v. 31, Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be aworshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

v. 32, Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes ofone that was born blind.

v. 33, If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

C. Jesus showed His compassion through His miracles.

Mark 1:40-42, And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling downto him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

v. 41, And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him,and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.

v. 42, And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him,and he was cleansed.

D. Through miracles, Jesus proved that the Kingdom of God was triumphing over theKingdom of Satan.

Matthew 12:22-28, Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, anddumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.

v. 23, And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

v. 24, But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast outdevils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

v. 25, And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom dividedagainst itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided againstitself shall not stand.

v. 26, And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall thenhis kingdom stand?

v. 27, And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast themout? therefore they shall be your judges.

v. 28, But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God iscome unto you.

E. Through His miracles, Jesus proved that He accepted the outcasts of human society.

1) Moses made regulations against persons with diseases and deformities.

a) Leviticus 13:3, And the priest shall look on the plague in the skin of theflesh: and when the hair in the plague is turned white, and the plague insight be deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is a plague of leprosy: and thepriest shall look on him, and pronounce him unclean.

4. MIRACLE OF SUPPLY

A. In supplying men’s needs both physical and spiritual, God begins with something orsomeone common.

PETER’S DRAUGHT OF FISHES

INTRODUCTION:

The miracles of the Lord Jesus Christ are important because, in them, God put His seal uponChrist as His Son. Acts 2:22, Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a manapproved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him inthe midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

Jesus used miracles as a “sign” of His power, to prove that He was different from other men.

READING:

Luke 5:4-11, Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into thedeep, and let down your nets for a draught.

v. 5, And simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and havetaken nothing; nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

v. 6, And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their netbrake.

v. 7, And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they shouldcome and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

v. 8, When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for Iam a sinful man, O Lord.

v. 9, For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes whichthey had taken:

v. 10, And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners withSimon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

v. 11, And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

17

1. THE REQUEST

A. Jesus asked Peter to launch out and let down his nets.

B. Peter was weary from a full night of work.

C. After much labor, nothing had been caught.

D. It was the wrong time to fish on Galilee.

2. THE REQUIREMENT

B. In spite of his excuses, he knew enough to obey.

C. When he let down the net, he set in motion a mighty force. He was acting on theWord of God when he said, “Nevertheless at Thy word.”

D. Peter did not find those fish, he simply obeyed the Master.

3. THE RESULT

A. Peter and his companions had a great surprise.

Luke 5:9-10, For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught ofthe fishes which they had taken.v. 10, And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were part-ners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thoushalt catch men.

B. Peter’s fishing business went from poverty to plenty because of obedience.

Luke 5:7, And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships,so that they began to sink.

C. The load of fish is the least important thing in the narrative. In verse 11, they leftthem.

Luke 5:11, And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, andfollowed him.

D. Peter’s confession in verse 8 was the result of the miracle.

Luke 5:8, When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart

from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

THE COIN IN THE FISH’S MOUTH

INTRODUCTION:

Today, we have an account of Christ paying tribute. The payment was not a civil payment toRoman powers, but to publicans for service of the temple and the defraying of expenses.Christ was technically exempt from this taxation as the temple belonged to God and He wasGod’s Son. Christ waived privileges, and paid His tribute. The tribute was paid by the miracleof the coin found in a fish’s mouth.

READING:

Romans 13:7, Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom towhom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

1. TRIBUTE MONEY

A. The tax was a small sum of half a shekel, Didrachmon—approximately 15 cents.

B. This Jewish custom dates back to 1491 B.C.

Exodus 30:13, This they shall give, every one that passeth among them that arenumbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the santuary: (a shekel is twenty gerahs:)an half shekel shall be the offering of the LORD.

2. THE BIG QUESTION

A. Matthew 17:24, And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tributemoney came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?

B. This means: Did Jesus recognize the necessity of Old Testament laws? Were theselaws valid and did they fulfill the spiritual demands of God?

C. Peter answered before he spoke to Jesus. Peter knew Christ came not to destroy but tofulfill the law.

20

1) Matthew 17:25, He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesusprevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of theearth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?

2) Matthew 5:17, Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I amnot come to destroy, but to fulfil.

3. STRANGERS OR CHILDREN

A. Strangers were required to pay tribute; the children of the royal family were exempt.

B. Jesus, God’s son and Lord of the Temple, was rightfully exempt.

C. All believers in Jesus are now the sons of God.

I John 3:2, Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what weshall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shallsee him as he is.

D. We are no longer strangers.

Ephesians 2:9,12, Not of works, lest any man should boast.v. 12, That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealthof Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and with-out God in the world.

4. FREEDOM THROUGH CHRIST

Now, as members of God’s household, we are made free:

A. From slavery of sin.

Romans 6:20, 22, For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free fromrighteousness.v. 22, But now being made free from sin, and become servants of God, ye haveyour fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

B. From demands of ceremonies.

Romans 3:20, 28, Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justi-fied in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.v. 28, Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds ofthe law.

21

C. From the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:2, For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me freefrom the law of sin and death.

5. MIRACLE OF SUPPLY

A. The external poverty of Jesus was a contrast with His eternal riches.

II Corinthians 8:9, For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though hewas rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might berich.

B. Jesus voluntarily paid the tribute.

Matthew 17:27, Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea,and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hastopened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto themfor me and thee.

C. Christians are to also voluntarily pay their due tribute.

1) Romans 13:7, Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due;custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

2) Matthew 22:21, They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Rendertherefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the thingsthat are God’s.

D. Two divine qualities were in operation.

1) Omnipotence—only God could have put it there.2) Omniscience—only God could know it was there.

E. His supply is sufficient.

THE FEEDING OF 5,000

INTRODUCTION:

This is one of the greatest miracles which Christ performed. While the raising of Lazarus, for example, was as much or more obviously divine, this one brought a new revelation ofChrist’s relation to His disciples. Not only were they witnesses, but immediate partakers ofthis divine blessing from Him who is able to supply every human need. If Jesus had not madethe disciples gather up the twelve baskets, someone might have gone away and said that he didnot have enough. God is not a wasteful God; neither should we waste anything He hasprovided for us.

This is a creative miracle, a miracle of nature. The turning of the water into wine was acreative miracle. These disciples saw the miracle. They had a part in it. They handled thebread in giving it out and in gathering it up.

READING:

John 6:9-13, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: butwhat are they among so many?

v. 10, And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. Sothe men sat down, in number about five thousand.

v. 11, And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to thedisciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as muchas they would.

v. 12, When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments thatremain, that nothing be lost.

v. 13, Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragmentsof the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

1. RECORDED BY THE FOUR EVANGELISTS

Very few things were recorded in all the four Gospels. This is the only miracle to berecorded by all the gospel writers. This is a good indication as to its importance in Christ’sministry.

A. Matthew 14:15-21, And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, Thisis a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they maygo into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

v. 16, But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

v. 17, And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

v. 18, He said, Bring them hither to me.

v. 19, And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the fiveloaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, andgave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

v. 20, And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments thatremained twelve baskets full.

v. 21, And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women andchildren.

B. Mark 6:35-44, And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him,and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed:

v. 36, Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into thevillages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.

v. 37, He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him,Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?

v. 38, He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when theyknew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

v. 39, And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the greengrass.

v. 40, And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.

v. 41, And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up toheaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to setbefore them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

v. 42, And they did all eat, and were filled.

v. 43, And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes.

v. 44, And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.

C. Luke 9:12-17, And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, andsaid unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns andcountry round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

v. 13, But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, we have no morebut five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

v. 14, For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Makethem sit down by fifties in a company.

v. 15, And they did so, and made them all sit down.

v. 16, Then he took the five loaves and two fishes, and looking up to heaven, heblessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

v. 17, And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragmentsthat remained to them twelve baskets.

D. John 6:5-14, When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company comeunto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

v. 6, And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.v. 7, Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient forthem, that every one of them may take a little.

v. 8, One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him,

v. 9, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes; butwhat are they among so many?

v. 10, And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in theplace. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

v. 11, And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed tothe disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of thefishes as much as they would.

v. 12, When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragmentsthat remain, that nothing be lost.

v. 13, Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with thefragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto themthat had eaten.

v. 14, Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This isof a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

2. WONDERING DISCIPLES

A. The disciples lacked the compassion of Christ for hungry people.

1) Jesus’s compassion

Mark 6:34, And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was movedwith compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having ashepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

2) The disciples’ hardened hearts

Mark 6:36, Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, andinto the villages, and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.

3) The church today needs to learn to do all we can. We can no longer hide our headsin the sand.

B. The disciples also lacked natural means of help and they saw no other hope.

Mark 6:37, He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they sayunto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them toeat?

C. They did not believe that little could be made much. They looked at the natural and notthe supernatural and saw the few fishes and loaves and said, “What are these among somany?”

John 6:9, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes:but what are they among so many?

3. WILLING OFFERING

A. This is a selfish world. The little boy is a key figure in this story. He could have hiddenhis lunch and kept it for himself.

B. In giving it he did not lose at all. Certainly he is the one who got the twelve baskets ofleft-overs.

Luke 6:38, Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, andshaken together, and running over, shall men give unto your bosom. For with thesame measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

4. THE WAY CHRIST SAW THE CROWD

A. Sheep without a shepherd.

Mark 6:34, And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved withcompassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: andhe began to teach them many things.

B. He saw needy humanity. In every phase of existence they had a lack.

1) food2) guide3) light4) salvation5) healing6) hope

5. WONDERFUL PROVISION

A. Jesus could have created the needed bread, but He supplied it through method of change.

B. Jesus blessed, broke, and gave.

C. Disciples handled the distribution of the bread and fish. Today, Christ uses humaninstruments.

D. They did it systematically so that no one was missed. He sat them down in groups offifties so that all could get their proper share.

6. THE BLESSING CONTINUES

The Lord wants each of us to have our share. God is the same today.

THE MIRACLE OF THE WITHERED HAND

INTRODUCTION:

This miracle took place in a synagogue, or place of worship. Christ’s presence divided thecongregation into two groups. They remain divided until this day. This miracle teaches theutter inconsistency of religion without inward experience.

READING:

Matthew 12:9-15, And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:v. 10, And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.v. 11, And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have onesheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?v. 12, How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on thesabbath days.v. 13, Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and itwas restored whole, like as the other.v. 14, Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might de-stroy him.v. 15, But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudesfollowed him, and he healed them all.

1. CHRIST ATTENDED CHURCH

Matthew 12:9, And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue.

A. Our Master was faithful in all aspects of good living.

B. He was a living example in godly behavior.

28

2. A MAN WITH A GREAT NEED WAS PRESENT

Matthew 12:10, And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered...

A. We do not know if this man attended church regularly or came because Jesus wasthere.

B. He evidently did not speak to Jesus personally about his need.

3. CHRIST’S ENEMIES WERE PRESENT

Matthew 12:10, ...And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbathdays? that they might accuse him.

A. Evidently, some people go to church to criticize.

B. The Pharisees wanted Christ to declare if the sick should be healed on the Sabbath.

4. CHRIST REBUFFS HIS ACCUSERS

Matthew 12:11-12, And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, thatshall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay holdon it, and lift it out?v. 12, How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do wellon the sabbath days.

A. Christ pleaded for the Pharisees to show some mercy.

B. He declared a sheep in a pit should be saved on the Sabbath and that man is betterthan an animal.

5. CHRIST HEALED THE WITHERED HAND

Matthew 12:13, Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched itforth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.

This unknown, unnamed man became the object of God’s miraculous mercy.

6. TWO GROUPS OF HUMANS

Matthew 12:14-15, Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, howthey might destroy him.

v. 15, But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudesfollowed him, and he healed them all.

A. The Pharisees left the synagogue to take counsel on how to destroy Jesus because ofHis miracles.

B. The multitude left the synagogue and followed Jesus. All that followed Him werehealed.

C. These two groups persist until this day. There are those who believe, and there arethose who refuse to believe.

HEALING OF THE TEN LEPERS

INTRODUCTION:

This narrative shows the abounding fruit of sin: ten lepers in a group. It also shows us theabundance of divine power to overcome sin: they were all cleansed. Leprosy is a horribledisease. What a sight Jesus encountered with these ten lepers. What sights He still sees todayin this sin-defiled world.

READING:

Luke 17:11-19, And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through themidst of Samaria and Galilee,

v. 12, And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:

v. 13, And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

v. 14, And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. Andit came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.

v. 15, And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loudvoice glorified God,

v. 16, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

v. 17, And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?

v. 18, There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

v. 19, And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

1. THE LEPERS WERE REQUIRED TO PERFORM AN ACT OF FAITH

A. They had to act before they had the slightest evidence that He had healed them.

Page 32: Miracles of Jesus SG (08.19.16) - Home | Dr. Sumrall's ... · LESTER SUMRALL TEACHING SERIES MIRACLES OF JESUS INTRODUCTION: The study of the miracles of Jesus is one of the most

31

B. They had to move before they began to feel the foul blood cleansed.

C. They had to believe the horrible dryness had yielded to healthy perspiration.

D. They had to have faith before they were to go to be pronounced clean.

2. AS THEY WENT THEY WERE CLEANSED

Luke 17:14, And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto thepriests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.

A. Jesus commanded them, “Go show yourselves unto the priests.”

B. They were to exhibit faith in Christ Jesus’ power to heal.

C. As they turned to walk away, they were in the same condition as before.

D. Although still lepers, they were to start to the place where they were to be examined.

E. None of us can imagine the joy they felt when they realized they were healed.

3. ONLY ONE RETURNED TO EXPRESS THANKS

A. Only one, a Samaritan, fell at Jesus’ feet and gave thanks.

B. The other nine dropped out of the story altogether.

C. Gratitude to Christ was scarce even in His own day.

4. MORE RECEIVE THAN EVER GIVE PRAISE

A. The number who pray is greater than the number who praise.

B. These ten lepers all prayed—“Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”

Luke 17:13, And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy onus.

C. The lack of praise from the nine disappointed the Master.

Luke 17:18-19, There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save thisstranger.v. 19, And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

D. Make sure your praise does not disappoint our Lord.

THE MIRACLE OF THE NOBLEMAN’S SON

INTRODUCTION:

This narrative illustrates the rise and progress of faith in the soul. Trouble led this noblemanto make a two-day journey to find Jesus.

If it had not been for trouble, no doubt he would not have even sought after Jesus. Trouble hasdriven many people to God. God knows you and also He knows what it takes to make you turnto God and salvation. He became interested when his son got sick.

The event took place in Cana, where Jesus turned the water into wine. I am sure all this terri-tory was familiar to Jesus.

READING:

John 4:46-54, So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.

v. 47, When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him,and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point ofdeath.

v. 48, Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

v. 49, The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.

v. 50, Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word thatJesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.

v. 51, And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy sonliveth.

v. 52, Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him,Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.

33

v. 53, So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thyson liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.

v. 54, This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaeainto Galilee.

1. A SPARK OF FAITH

A. His faith rested upon the reports of others. He had heard of Jesus from others whoseword he trusted.

B. He turned his faith to practical use. He heard a rumor of Jesus and he went to find thisman of miracles.

C. Use the faith you have. Most of us have more faith than we use.

2. THE FIRE OF FAITH

He limited the power of Jesus to His local presence. He believed that if Jesus would enterthe room where the sick boy lay, He could speak to the fever and stop it. He thought Jesushad to be there. He thought that Jesus could act only through His physical presence.

3. HIS FAITH WAS ALSO LIMITED TO SIGNS AND WONDERS

A. John 4:48, ...Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

B. His faith withstood this rebuff from the Lord. He learned to act by faith not by sight.

Romans 1:17, For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith:as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

4. FLAME OF FAITH

A. John 4:50, ...Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesushad spoken unto him, and he went by faith.

He returned home with the leisure of confidence. Anxious minds are in a hurry to see.He was so sure that he started home at leisure.

B. He felt his son was all right; the fever of anxiety left the father.

C. All saw that his mind was at ease regarding his son.

34

5. A CONFIRMATION OF FAITH

A. His faith was confirmed by the answer to his prayers. He had proved the truth of theLord’s word.

B. He believed with a more assured sense than he did before.

C. He inquired about it. The more he studied the case, the more wonderful it became.

D. He rose to a greater and firmer faith.

6. HE BECAME A DISCIPLE OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

A. A man who has been helped of a severe trouble cannot forget his deliverer.

B. His family also believed. The father did not know when he went pleading about his boy, that he also needed salvation. Now salvation had come to the whole family.

John 4:53, ...himself believed, and his whole house.

May the Lord work such a wonder as that in all of our homes.

THE DEMONIAC IN THE SYNAGOGUE

INTRODUCTION:

In this lesson we find Christ teaching in the synagogue on the Sabbath. Those present “wereastonished at His doctrine for He taught as one that had authority.” He not only brought a newdoctrine, but also displayed His authority; even the unclean spirits were subject unto Him.

READING:

Mark 1:21-27, And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day heentered into the synagogue, and taught.

v. 22, And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had au-thority, and not as the scribes.

v. 23, And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,

v. 24, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thoucome to destroy us? I know thee, who thou art, the Holy One of God.

v. 25, And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.

v. 26, And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came outof him.

v. 27, And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, say-ing, What thing is this? What new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth heeven the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

1. CHRIST IN THE SYNAGOGUE

A. The scribes were professional instructors in religion.

1) They repeated and enforced the traditions of the elders.2) They taught nothing original, but continually referred back to some great rabbi.3) The scribes were an echo of what God said on Mt. Sinai.

Page 37: Miracles of Jesus SG (08.19.16) - Home | Dr. Sumrall's ... · LESTER SUMRALL TEACHING SERIES MIRACLES OF JESUS INTRODUCTION: The study of the miracles of Jesus is one of the most

36

B. Christ brought a new doctrine.

1) He referred to tradition only to condemn it.2) His doctrine was more than theory. He proved His claims with positive action.3) Christ was not an echo, but a voice.

2. SATANIC DISCERNMENT AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

A. Jesus aroused their fears that their hour of judgment had come.

Mark 1:24, ...Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth?art thou come to destroy us?...

B. The demons recognized Jesus as their superior.

Mark 1:24, ...I know thee who thou art,...

C. They acknowledged Him as the Son of God.

Mark 1:24, ...the Holy One of God.

D. The evil spirits had to obey Jesus’ command. They tried to resist, but had to yield.

Mark 1:26, And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice,he came out of him.

E. In the presence of Jesus, the evil spirit is conquered and the man is delivered.

This religious demon felt fine until Jesus appeared. Jesus was the master. This spiritbegan to argue, but he lost and had to come out of the man.

3. DIVINE AUTHORITY AND POWER

A. Authority in His presence.

1) Satan himself confessed it.

Matthew 4:3, And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son ofGod, command that these stones be made bread.

2) Angels recognized it.

Hebrews 1:6, And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world,he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

The Demoniac in the Synagogue

3) Demons felt it and cowered beneath his glance.

Mark 1:24, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus ofNazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy Oneof God.

4. NATURE KNEW IT AND OBEYED HIS COMMAND

Luke 8:24, And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, andthere was a calm.

5. ENEMIES WERE CONSCIOUS OF IT

A. They were silenced by His reasoning.

Matthew 22:22, When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him,and went their way.

B. Authority in His word.

1) At the baptism of Jesus, heaven opened and God spoke.

Matthew 3:17, And lo a voice from heaven saying, This is my beloved Son, inwhom I am well pleased.

2) Jesus spoke the word and Satan was conquered.

Mark 1:27, And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned amongthemselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for withauthority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

C. Triumphant power.

1) At all times Jesus was a master of the situation.

John 13:3, Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God.

2) All power in Heaven and earth was at His command.

Matthew 28:18, And Jesus came and spake unto them saying, All power is givenunto me in heaven and in earth.

3) At Calvary, He broke the power of Satan over our lives.

Colossians 2:15, And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shewof them openly, triumphing over them in it.

THE DEMONIAC OF GADARA

INTRODUCTION:

In Biblical language, leprosy is a type of sin in general. Palsy is a type of the helplessness ofsin. Demon possession is a type of the fury of sin.

Demon spirits are personalities without bodies. Humans are spirits with bodies. Demonsneed a body to express themselves, so they seek bodies to carry out evil missions. They talkthrough the mouth and tongue of the one they possess. Since demons are personalities, theyreveal their own personalities in the person they possess.

READING:

Mark 5:1-19, And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of theGadarenes.

v. 2, And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs aman with an unclean spirit,

v. 3, Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not withchains:

v. 4, Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains hadbeen plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any mantame him.

v. 5, And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, andcutting himself with stones.

v. 6, But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,

v. 7, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son ofthe most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.

v. 8, For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

v. 9, And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion:for we are many.v. 10, And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

v. 11, Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.

v. 12, And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enterinto them.v. 13, And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and enteredinto the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they wereabout two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.v. 14, And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And theywent out to see what it was that was done.v. 15, And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had thelegion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.v. 16, And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.v. 17, And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.

v. 18, And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devilprayed him that he might be with him.v. 19, Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tellthem how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

1. THE DEVIL DROVE HIS VICTIM INTO THE WILDERNESS

The devil is a driver. He compels his victims. This man was possessed with 2,000 evilspirits. People were afraid to come near him. He tore all the clothes from his body andwandered in the mountains and tombs screaming like a maniac.

2. NATURAL HELP COULD NOT SAVE HIM

His friends tried to bind and tame him but he was too fierce for human help. Jesus said thata stronger man must come before a person can be set free.

Luke 11:21-22, When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:v. 22, But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he takethfrom him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

3. THE COMING OF CHRIST

One day the wild man saw a small boat approaching the shore. He ran to torment them andcame face to face with Jesus. The evil spirits in him cried out for mercy. They had met the

Master. The Stronger said, “Come Out,” and the man was delivered. Demons alwaysrecognize Jesus and His servants.

A. Matthew 8:29, And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee,Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?

B. Mark 1:22, And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one thathad authority, and not as the scribes.

C. Mark 1:26, And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice,he came out of him.

D. Luke 4:40-41, Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with diversdiseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, andhealed them.

v. 41, And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ theSon of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew thathe was Christ.

4. THIS WILD MAN BECAME TAME

Luke 8:35, Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found theman, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and inhis right mind: and they were afraid.

A. He was sitting at the feet of Jesus, subdued, controlled and conquered. No longer washe a raving maniac.

B. He was clothed. Apparently a garment was given to him by one of the disciples for himto cover himself. Once he was free from the devil’s power, he immediately regainedhis moral values.

C. He was in his right mind. Humans never fully find themselves until they find Christ.

5. RESULTS OF THE DELIVERANCE

A. The healed man wanted to go with Christ but was told to go to his own people.

B. The community preferred pigs to Christ and commanded Him to leave.

C. This new man in Christ became an evangelist to the ten cities of Decapolis.

Mark 5:20, And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great thingsJesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.

D. Later, when Jesus returned to the area, great multitudes followed Him. Likely they hadheard about Jesus from the Gadarene evangelist. It was on this second visit to Decapolisthat Jesus miraculously fed four thousand with seven loaves and a handful of fish.

Mark 6:31, And he said unto them, Come ye apart into a desert place, and rest awhile: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much asto eat.

Mark 8:2-9, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been withme three days, and have nothing to eat:

v. 3, And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way:for divers of them came from far.

v. 4, And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these menwith bread here in the wilderness?

v. 5, And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.

v. 6, And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took theseven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set beforethem; and they did set them before the people.

v. 7, And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set themalso before them.

v. 8, So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that wasleft seven baskets.

v. 9, And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

MIRACLES OF RAISING THE DEAD

INTRODUCTION:

The greatest miracle is for a person, whose life is extinguished and whose soul has left hisbody, to be raised from the dead. In the Old Testament, Elijah raised a boy from the dead.Elisha also raised a boy from the dead and a man was raised from the dead by being cast uponthe bones of Elisha.

READING:

John 5:21, 24-29, For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so theSon quickeneth whom he will.

v. 24, Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him thatsent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed fromdeath unto life.

v. 25, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shallhear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

v. 26, For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life inhimself;

v. 27, And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son ofman.

v. 28, Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the gravesshall hear his voice,

v. 29, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; andthey that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

1. DEATH IS A TYPE OF SIN

A. Before the new birth all are spiritually dead.

43

Ephesians 2:1, And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.

B. Death came by one man’s sin.

I Corinthians 15:21, For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrec-tion of the dead.

C. Death passed to all by Adam’s sin.

Romans 5:12, Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death bysin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.

D. The wages of sin is death.

Romans 6:23, For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal lifethrough Jesus Christ our Lord.

2. DEATH STRIKES ALL AGES

In the ministry of Christ there were three who were raised from the dead; rather thanlooking for the undertaker, they went to look for Jesus.

A. The daughter was young and innocent.

Matthew 9:18-19, 23-26, While he spake these things unto them, behold, there camea certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: butcome and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.v. 19, And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.

v. 23, And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and thepeople making a noise,v. 24, He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. Andthey laughed him to scorn.v. 25, But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, andthe maid arose.v. 26, And the fame thereof went abroad into all the land.

B. The widow’s son had no doubt gone into sin.

Luke 7:12-16, Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was adead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and muchpeople of the city was with her.

v. 13, And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her,Weep not.

v. 14, And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And hesaid, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

v. 15, And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to hismother.

v. 16, And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a greatprophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

C. Lazarus was a mature man.

1) John 11:39-44, Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of himthat was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath beendead four days.

v. 40, Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

v. 41, Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heardme.

v. 42, And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people whichstand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

v. 43, And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, comeforth.

v. 44, And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes:and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him,and let him go.

2) There have been people raised from the dead in our lifetime. One example occuredin Brazil. A Christian woman had been dead two days. Some of the native Chris-tians entered into her room and came back out some time later with the “dead”lady leading the way. This miracle brought the mother of the President of Brazilinto Pentecost.

3) Brother Wigglesworth’s wife died. She had been dead several hours and had beenpronounced dead by the doctor. He walked into her room and commanded her towalk in Jesus’ name. She did arise and lived several more years!

3. CHRIST FACED AND OVERCAME DEATH IN THREE CIRCUMSTANCES

A. The nobleman’s daughter still in the house dead.

B. The widow’s son dead and half way to the cemetary.

C. Lazarus had been dead four days and was in the grave; the decaying process had possi-bly already begun.

4. CHRIST CAN DELIVER FROM SIN AND DEATH

A. Regardless of the depth of sin.

B. No matter how long you’ve sinned

C. No matter where or when a sinner repents.

5. SAME POWER MANIFESTED

A. When Jesus rose from the dead.

Romans 8:11, But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell inyou, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodiesby his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

B. When sins are forgiven and we pass from death to life.

Matthew 5:24, Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be recon-ciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

C. When our mortal bodies rise to meet Him in the air.

I Thessalonians 4:16-17, For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with ashout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead inChrist shall rise first:

v. 17, Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them inthe clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

MAKING MIRACLES HAPPEN IN YOUR LIFE

INTRODUCTION:

Anything Jesus did two thousand years ago, He is still doing today. Here are some keys toopening your life to His miracle power.

READING:

Mark 9:39, But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle inmy name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

1. HEARING A TESTIMONY

A. Jesus’ disciples understood the value and power of a testimony for preparing the heartsof the people to experience the miracle-working power of God. When Peter and Johnwitnessed the supernatural they said in Acts 4:20, We cannot but speak the thingswhich we have seen and heard.

B. One of the most effective ways of bolstering our faith for the miraculous is by hear-ing the testimony of what God has done for others. It is right to expect that the Godwho is no respecter of persons will certainly do the same for you that He has done forsomeone else.

2. READING AND PREACHING THE BIBLE

A. The Bible is divine revelation to man. As we read God’s Word we are inspired andchallenged by the record of many centuries of divine miracles. All that God has done,He will do again. The divinely inspired Word of God can create an attitude for miraclesin every heart, making it fertile soil in which God can perform the supernatural.Romans 10:17, So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Making Miracles Happen in Your Life

B. When the Word of God is declared without compromise God confirms that word withsigns and wonders. Mark 16:20, And they went forth, and preached every where, theLord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

3. PRAYER

It has been said that God does nothing except in answer to prayer. As one reads the Word ofGod he sees that miracles come through men who pray. I am convinced that God actuallydesires to do far more miracles for us than we ever realize simply because we do not pray. When the early church stood in need of a miracle, Acts 4:24 says, They lifted up theirvoice to God with one accord. Acts 4:31 gives the result: And when they had prayed, theplace was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled withthe Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

4. FASTING

A. When Jesus was baptized in the River Jordan and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him,He was led immediately by the Spirit into the wilderness where for forty days andnights He fasted in preparation for the miracle ministry which was to follow. Thesame Spirit which led Jesus to fast will also lead the followers of Jesus to fast onoccasion.

B. When Jesus’ disciples were unsuccessful in exorcising the evil spirits which pos-sessed a young man, Jesus told them in Matthew 17:21, This kind goeth not out butby prayer and fasting. The fasting prayer is the only way in which some miracles canbe obtained, especially over evil spirits.

5. OBEDIENCE

A. Preceeding Jesus’ first public miracle of turning the water to wine, His mother told theservants in John 2:5, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. It was through their unques-tioning obedience that the miracle was accomplished.

B. Many have not experienced the fullness of the Spirit in their lives because of disobedi-ence. In Acts 5:32 the Apostle Peter spoke of ...the Holy Ghost, whom God hathgiven to them that obey him.

6. BELIEVE

When Abraham was an old man and his wife, Sara, was well beyond the age of childbearing

they had a miracle son. The baby did not come naturally and it was not by accident. Ithappened for one reason—they believed God. Hebrews 11:11 says, Through faith alsoSara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when shewas past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

Jesus said in Mark 9:23, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
