Student Voice This Edition Is From Year 9, Izzy, Cooper and Chris

The past two terms have been filled with opportunities for Year 9. We have participated in a range of excursions including; Year 9 Anglesea camp, Bronze Duke of Edinburgh hike, Charles Sturt University visit and SRC camp and extra-curricular activities such as the school production of Wizard of Oz. Anglesea was a wonderful trip full of laughing, screaming and challenges which drew us closer together as a year group. Miss Hatton and all the staff who came with us supported us to go outside of our comfort zones and fall from 18 meters on the giant swing. Nineteen students took part in the Duke of Ed Hike to the Grampians. We had to work as a team to successfully navigate the picturesque landscape. We thank the teachers who came with us. Last term we travelled to Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. We experienced campus taking part in lectures and activities which reflected our interests. This trip enlightened us about our options after high school. We had a range of talented students assisting in the school production, including cast, musicians, stage crew and designers. We are very excited at the rumoured prospect of another production during our time at DHS. Finally this year we were lucky enough to participate in the annual SRC conference in Murrumbateman. We collaborated with students from across NSW, to discuss issues effecting SRC’s in many schools. We learned leadership, organisation and team work skills which we were able to bring back to DHS to strengthen the position and effectiveness of our

team.

Year 7 Drama Extravaganza This year’s annual Drama Extravaganza saw Year 7

classes take the stage to perform plays of their own

creation.

The brief they were given: Compose a play of no

more than three minutes for a primary school

audience, a play that has a clear message and

lesson.

In the lead-up, each class nominated the two best

plays, sending a total of ten groups through to the

final – the Drama Extravaganza.

With the rest of Year 7 as their audience, each

group got up on-stage and performed their skits.

Mrs Jenna Kaine and Miss Kermode served as

judges for the afternoon and were impressed by the

actors’ use of movement and voice as well as the

colourful props and costumes.

The best three performances went to those groups

who best met the brief:

1st – 7 Orange 2 – Don’t be a Jeffrey

2nd

– 7 Green 2 – Sharing is Caring

3rd

– 7 Red 1 – Handball.

Other awards:

Best Props – 7 Green 2

Best Costumes – 7 Green 1

Best Use of Space – 7 Green 1

We look forward to more drama in 2020!

Miss Kermode

Great Victorian Bike Ride - 2019

On Thursday the 21st of November, 14 students, 3 teachers and 7 adults set out for the 2019 Great Victorian Bike Ride. We were driven by Shane Laing to Naracoorte where bwe stayed overnight and had aguided tour of the Victoria Fossil Cave. This year the Deni High students joined 4000 other riders on the ‘Robe – Great Ocean Rode Ride for a week in another world, although for the first time ever DHS did the 5 day Ride. The conditions for the ride weren’t always the best with the students facing strong head winds, cold weather and rain for the much of the ride. Over the period of 5 days, the Deni High team rode a total of 350km. The route for the 2019 ride is as follows: Day 1 – Robe- Millicent 89km) Day 2 – Millicent-Mount Gambier (90km) Day 3 – Mount Gambier- Portland (109km) Day 4 – Portland- Port Fairy 88km) Day 5 –– Rest day in Port Fairy (Where we finished) During the event, the riders camped in tents with the 4000 other riders and were well provided for by the catering organisations. On the rest day, the students enjoyed walking through the coastal landscape and getting warm in Coffee shops. They were also entertained with bands and films playing every night as well as competitions to keep spirits up. Our students were the recipients of two awards given out by Bicycle Network for best dressed school and best riding etiquette-This award was for great communication and riding sensibly while on the road. The students represented the school to the highest level and received comments frequently on how well the students behaved and how valuable they were in helping their team and other riders on the road. They were excellent role models for their school and for Deniliquin. I would like to congratulate all students who participated in this years ride and strongly encourage them to participate in the 2020 Silo Art Trail GVBR. I would like to make a special mention to Edwina Barclay and Rachel Crockart who completed their 4

th Great Victorian Bike Ride this

year. The students and I would also like to thank the parents who attended the ride and their support during the 6 days. This years participants include: Isabella McIlwain Harry Dudley Rachael Crockart Sophie Strong Marcus Moorse Mathew Moorse Edwina Barclay Rosie North James Hood Zoe Holloway Matilda Glowrey Olivia Manzin Will McKern Sophie Murray

Duke of Edinburgh On Wednesday 4 December, 20 of our Year 9

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students set off to the

Grampians National Park to partake in their

Qualifying Adventurous Journey as a requirement of

the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The award is

Internationally recognised and enables participants

to develop their skills across a range of areas and

therefore become valuable members of society in

the school and wider community.

The Grampians hike is the culmination of the

program and challenges participants both mentally

and physically. The students were required to pack

all of their food, equipment and clothes for the two-

day expedition and carry the 12 kilogram backpack

for approximately 20 kilometres. In the two days

they summited Mount Rosea (1009m) and were

able to take in the spectacular views of Halls Gap

and surrounds. The Highlights included The

Pinnacle, Silent Street, Cool Chamber and the

Grand Canyon.

These 20 students were fantastic ambassadors of our school and thoroughly demonstrated Respect, Responsibility and Co-operation.

Year 10 Deniliquin High School Driver Education Week Last week, Year 10 students were involved in our annual Driver Education Program. The program is an initiative of the Driver Education Sub-committee of the P&C, and is supported by teaching and learning in the PDHPE Faculty Area. Throughout the week, all students attended the following sessions;

Mental Health & Wellbeing: Students attended a session with our School Counsellors, Miss Shanahan, and learn about cyber safety, mental health issues and how to support and seek assistance for a friend who is having a mental health crisis.

Around Town; Students followed the chain of command that would occur in the event of a road accident, from insurance agency & hospital, to the police station and then a mock court. At each place, students learnt what part this agency plays in processing a road accident.

Deniliquin Car Club; Students participated in a full day practical session at the Deniliquin Car Club. In addition to practising driving, students also spent time with local Driving Instructor Brian Purtill regarding traffic laws in the Deniliquin and surrounding community. They also learnt some basic mechanics from Mr Matt Huckin.

Mock Accident; Students witnessed our local emergency services in action as they responded to a mock accident and removed and treated victims trapped in a car following a collision.

Guest Speaker; Mr John Maher is an inspiring speaker whose life has been impacted by road trauma. He recounted the circumstances leading up to these events and the effect this has had on his life. He also repeated this session for a small group of parents on Thursday evening.

ATA Truck/Maritime and ATV Safety; this group travels from Northern Australia each year to be a part of our program. The truck is fitted with interactive activities to raise the student’s awareness of scenarios they may encounter on the roads when driving. This year, the session also include maritime safety for travel on our rivers and ATV safety for use on agricultural properties.

Road Rage – practical self defence: presented by past DHS student Daniel Zrajko, this session taught students about the issues involved with road rage and how to maintain your personal safety when travelling on public transport. Thank you to the dedicated Driver Education Sub-Committee and the many generous community organisations that have contributed to this most worthwhile program.

International Day of People with

Disability 3 December marked International Day of People with Disability, a United Nations sanctioned day that unites people around the world in celebrating the achievements and contributions of people with disability. Our school hosted an Inclusion Sports Event that was planned by the Year 10 PASS elective classes. The event was attended by the entire Year 10 cohort and the Support Class. The first part of the event involved an educational session on inclusion. Students were required to write a name tag without using their hands and viewed short films from the Focus on Ability film festival. The second part of the day was a tabloid-style sports event. Students participated in goalball, wheelchair (scooter board) rugby, sitting volleyball, bocce and hand tennis. It was a great day celebrating ability and inclusion.

Year 10 student, Elizabeth Leitch Elizabeth Leitch, has been accepted into a study tour of The Great Barrier Reef in April, 2020. She is one of only 16 students across Australia selected to take part in this exciting opportunity! The 10 day expedition, led by Dr Andy Lewis, takes place on Lizard Island and aims to educate students on marine conservation and reef sustainability. The program includes snorkeling, field research and classes on coral reef biology. We are very proud of Elizabeth and can’t wait to follow her incredible adventure! The school will organise a fundraising activity in Term 1 next year to support her venture and raise awareness of coral reef conservation.

Year 11 Hospitality Year 11 Hospitality catered and served a Mocktail and Cocktail Food party for Rotary on Monday 2 December. Students had the opportunity to mingle with the members of Rotary whilst gaining skills in communicating with diverse customers, front of house service and mixing a variety of non-alcoholic ingredients to prepare suitable drinks.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

Keep coughing kids home and see your GP. Whooping cough (also called pertussis) began increasing across NSW towards the end of 2018, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. NSW Health anticipates that this increase will continue into future years. School-aged children who are infected with whooping cough usually experience a troubling cough that can persist for months, but they rarely get severe illness. However they can spread the infection to younger siblings and other more vulnerable people, who are at higher risk of severe disease. Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies. What can you do to prevent whooping cough? 1. Make sure vaccinations are up to date for all family members 2. Be alert for symptoms of whooping cough 3. Keep coughing kids home, to prevent them spreading the infection to others, and see your

GP to get them tested for whooping cough For more information on Whooping Cough and vaccination visit the NSW Health Website(https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/whoopingcough/Pages/default.aspx) You can also find out about other important infectious disease alerts by visiting the alerts page(https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/alerts/Pages/default.aspx).
