GANDHINAGAR Life at GANDHINAGAR – Capital City

Gandhinagar named after Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation is capital city of Gujarat located on the banks of Sabarmati River. The total area of Gandhinagar is 65 Sq. KM (approximately). The weather is very warm from March to June and is humid from July to October. The city experiences mild winter from November to February. The population of Gandhinagar is about four lakhs. NIFT is located in an institutional area, on GH-0 Extension Road. How to reach: Gandhinagar is 15 kms. from Ahmedabad Airport and 21 kms. from Ahmedabad (Kalupur) Railway Station. Gandhinagar Capital Railway Station at Sector 14 is situated approximately 7.5 kms., away from the Institute which is near to the Sports Authority of India Complex, The Gandhinagar capital railway station is connected with Indore, Mumbai, Delhi and Haridwar. The computerized railway-booking center is situated at Sector No. 10 in the Old Sachivalaya Complex near Post Office as well as at the Railway Station. State Transport Buses are operated from Ahmedabad at intervals of 15 minutes. Roads and important Landmarks: The seven roads running parallel are named numerically as Road Nos. 1 to 7 while diagonal cross roads names as per Gujrati/Hindi alphabet as “K”, “KH”, “GH” road to “J” road etc. Circles and cross roads are known by alpha numeric names like GH-0, GH-6, CH-5 etc. The road no. 5 crossing the “GH” road, junction is known as GH-5, the center point where you have lots of open air stalls for food, snacks, ice cream, hotels and all banks are situated near GH-5. Shopping for Essentials: Shopping area, vegetable & mutton/fish markets are situated in Infocity, Sector No. 7, and Sector 21. Many banks/ATMs/Restaurants and theatres are located in this area. Restaurants & Cinemas Cinema halls and prominent hotels/restaurants catering to different cuisines as per different budgets are available near the Institute within a radius of 3 kms. Commuting to & fro Ahmedabad State Government buses operate for Ahmedabad at intervals of every fifteen minutes from Central Bus Station named as Pathikashram on a round the clock basis. Students can get the bus from GH-0 circle which is half km from NIFT Campus. These buses can also be available from Bus Stops nearby to their residence in case of non-hosteller students. It is advisable to travel by government buses. Local buses are also available from GH-0 to various parts of Gandhinagar. Canteen Facility: Canteen facility are available from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm on Campus. Students are advised to take maximum benefits of the same for healthy and hygienic food.

Medical facility: On Campus, a medical doctor is available on every working day during 8.15 – 9.45 am (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday). Over and above these visiting hours on the campus, Doctor also provides service at his consulting room on production/showing his/her identity card. A Govt. Civil hospital is located at a distance of only 3 km. The Hi-Tech Hospital is located within 2 KM, and Aashka Hospital is located within 1 km and Apollo Hospital within 10 KM respectively from the Campus. NIFT Gandhinagar has Group mediclaim and personal accident policy for the value of Rs. 50,000/-. Students are supposed to inform the hostel warden/Course Coordinator in case of hospitalization. Bus facility: NIFT provides bus facility between Ahmedabad and NIFT Gandhinagar Campus on payment basis. Prohibition: Gujarat is the state in the country having prohibition on consumption of liquor and alcoholic beverages. No student should ever consume or carry alcoholic beverages. It is a serious criminal offence to consume or even to carry alcoholic beverages. Students should also refrain from consuming any tobacco products, or any intoxicants.

RESOURCE CENTRE MEMBERSHIP RULES FOR STUDENTS

I TIMINGS :

9:30 AM TO 08:00 PM Monday – Friday 9:30 AM TO 5:30 PM Saturday

(Circulation counter will be closed before 30 minutes of closing hour. Users must leave the RC five minutes before closing time to ensure proper checking and locking of the department).

The Resource Centre will be closed on Government of India Holiday(s) and other notified day(s).

II GENERAL

1. No entry in the Resource Centre without Identity Card. 2. While entering the Resource Centre, readers should leave their personal belongings, such

as bags, brief-case, personal books and parcels outside. 3. While entering the Resource Centre, readers should show the Identity card to the security.

Mobile phone must be switched off before entering the Resource Centre.

4. Food, Cutter, Scissors and laptops are not allowed in the Resource Centre.

5. Use of camera/ camera phone is not allowed in the Resource Centre

6. Smoking is strictly prohibited.

7. Readers leaving the Resource Centre should allow the security staff to examine the items carried out and inspection on person if required.

8. Any students found to create any disturbance, may be asked to leave the Resource

Centre and may be debarred permanently for any repeated act of indiscipline in and around Resource Centre premises.

9. Readers should not deface, mark, cut, mutilate or damage Resource Centre material. If

anyone is found doing so, he/she will be charged the full replacement cost of the material and will be debarred from using the Resource Centre.

10. If any member is caught carrying any un-issued books or materials out of the RC, he/she

will pay a fine of Rs.1,000/- at the circulation counter and will be debarred from using the Resource Centre.

11. Access to the Resource Centre will be denied to those members who do not return Resource Centre books after being issued three overdue notices. The cost of the book will be recovered with penalty if the book is not returned after the 3rd notice.

12. Electronic Security Device is in use in the Resource Centre and the entire area is under

CCTV surveillance.

III BORROWING

1. Two books can be borrowed at a time for two weeks only by the students, against Identity Card.

2. For overdue books (more than one week), a fine of Rs. 10/- per day will be charged.

Overdue notice is sent every Monday to the students by email and to the concerned department as well.

3. Resource Centre Identity card is non-transferable and members are responsible for

books borrowed on their card. Loss of card should be immediately reported to the Head Librarian. A fee of Rs. 250/- will be charged for issuing a duplicate Resource Centre card.

4. Reference material/books, collections, periodical (loose/bound), Audio-Visual materials and

collection of material wing are not issued out.

5. A student will pay three times the cost of the book if lost or damaged. Lost or damaged books must be paid for before other books can be issued. An overdue fine will also be deducted from the Security Deposit.

IV RETURN / RENEWAL OF BOOKS

1. The borrower may return or renew the book on or before the due date. For Renewing presentation of the material is necessary. Renewal is not permitted if Demand is pending for the material.

2. If the borrower leaves Gandhinagar/ Ahmedabad and is not expected to return before the

due date. He/ She should return such material before leaving the city. 3. The Resource Centre has the authority to ask for return of any material any time without

assigning any reason. 4. All students/faculty will deposit the books back compulsorily 5 days before the end term

exams to facilitate the process of verification. Those not complying with this will not be allowed to appear in the exam and they will be charged as per the penalty (including cost) as decided by the authorities.

V RESERVATION OF BOOKS

To reserve book that is out on loan, students would be required to contact the circulation desk for further assistance.

VI PHOTOCOPYING

Photocopying facility is available in the Resource Centre on payment basis.

VII INTER LIBRARY LOAN

Arrangements have been made for Inter Library loan from the following 1. British Library, Vastrapur, Ahmedabad 2. NID Library, Paldi, Ahmedabad and NID PG Campus Gandhinagar. 3. EDI Library, Bhat (Airport Road), Ahmedabad 4. Ahmedabad Management Association, Vastrapur, Ahmedabad. 5. IIM, Ahmedabad

For this above purpose please contact Resource Centre Office.

VIII SECURITY DEPOSIT

This will be refunded only after clearance of the Resource Centre dues and on receiving a no due certificate from the Resource Centre.

Rules & Regulations of Information Technology Lab

Rules & Regulations for Students

1. Students who wish to work in the computer lab are required to make proper entry in the concerned register.

2. Students will not be allowed to enter computer lab without their I-Card. 3. No eatables and drinks are allowed inside or surrounding premises of the lab. 4. Printing facility is available only at NIFT shop on payment basis. 5. Students will have to maintain proper discipline in the computer lab. Mobile phones

must be switched off before entering the lab. 6. Electronic equipment and other items provided inside the lab are highly

sophisticated and expensive, hence extra care is warranted from the students using the same. In case any damage is caused to any item due to negligence, the student concerned will have to bear its cost.

7. Students are requested to save their work in their own Storage Media instead of

hard disk. Every Friday all the files will be deleted except system files. The Hard Disk can also be cleaned on any day of the week if the memory or disk space is found to be less. The computer lab will not be responsible for any data loss of the users.

8. Computer lab may be booked by the group of minimum 10 students for extra work/

assignments etc. beyond normal hours only up-to 8.30 pm on weekdays and during 9.00 am to 6.00 pm on weekend. The permission for opening of lab beyond office hours should be recommended by the concerned head of the department and approved by the Joint Director in prescribed format; however, no overnight permission is admissible.

9. Users should not make changes in the system settings, wall paper, screen saver

etc. 10. Listening to music and playing computer games is not allowed in the computer lab.

Students should not carry walkman, laptop, water bottles & bags etc. inside the lab. 11. Any student found breaking the above rules would be liable to pay a fine of Rs.

500/-.

A brief note on Students’ Attendance Policy

All students are hereby informed that they should remain punctual in attending classes. Student may be debarred from appearing in the End Term Examinations in case of shortage of attendance. Salient Features for Attendance Policy 1. A student is required to have minimum 75% attendance in total Sessions/Classes

conducted during the semester to be allowed to appear in the final assessment/end semester exams/ jury of the subjects.

2. A student is required to have a minimum 65% attendance in each individual subject taught in the semester to be allowed to appear in the final assessment /end semester exams/jury of the subjects.

a). “In extreme extenuating circumstances, relaxation in attendance may be allowed to students who have overall attendance of 75% but have less than 65% attendance in upto two subjects, with lower limit of 50%, based on self-study norms in these two subjects. The students would be given special assignments related to the topics missed by them, under the guidance of the concerned faculty and based on certification of satisfactory clearance from the faculty; the students may be allowed to appear for examination. The decision will be taken by LASC under intimation to the DG before the semester Exam starts.”

3. The student with shortage of attendance as per above would be issued three notices or warnings

(a) After four weeks of start of semester, this would be in the form of warning notice. (b) At the time of mid-term exams. (c) Two weeks before the end term exams which would specify whether the student is

required to repeat the semester or would be permitted for re-exams.

4. Uniformed absence of more than four weeks due to any causes means a loss of candidature for the student i.e. the name of the student will be struck off from the NIFT rolls.

6. In case of 0% attendance till mid-term, the student’s name would be struck off from the rolls of the Institute after the issue of a show cause notice.

Power to relax: No provision of this policy will be relaxed except with explicit approval of the Competent Authority, i.e. Academic Appeals Committee headed by Dean (A), DG (1st Appellate Authority), and Board of Governors. The student must make a serious note of the Attendance Policy which is strictly enforceable

GANDHINAGAR Discipline and Conduct issues

• Students are expected to maintain a high order of discipline in and out of the Institute.

• Reports of complaints on behavioral lapses or in-discipline from faculty, staff or from the public should be viewed seriously. As a responsible representative of the premier National Institute, students are expected to set an example through poise, politeness, community feeling and integrity in and outside the Institute.

• Students are required to give an undertaking at the time of joining the Institute as well as the beginning of each Academic Session to abstain from smoking, use of alcoholic drinks, drugs and indulging in any other undesirable activity.

Definition of Misconduct

• The essence of misconduct under this code is improper interference - in the broadest sense - with the proper functioning or activities of the NIFT, or those who work or study in the NIFT, or action which otherwise damages the image of NIFT.

Disciplinary Procedures and Penalties Any student found indulging in any activities violating the conduct rules of NIFT will invite disciplinary action.

Disciplinary Procedure guidelines The faculty members, officers reporting the misconduct shall report to the Centre Coordinator of the discipline/department and/or Joint Director. An enquiry shall be conducted by the concerned Committee (Campus/ Hostel / Examination) as per NIFT rules. Penalties

For Minor Disciplinary Violation: Where the violation is considered minor by the Competent Authority, the following penalties may be imposed at the discretion of the Competent Authority for the minor disciplinary violations:

a) A fine of upto Rs. 5000/- for each violation/offence and/or b) A requirement that the student pays the cost of any damage in relation to any

property lost or damaged or any expenditure incurred on medical expenses in case of a scuffle. The expenditure may have been incurred by the NIFT/third party or subsidiary organization and will have to be paid by the violator/s to NIFT for the violation. The same shall be deposited by the student within five days of the notification by the Dy Director (F&A)/Joint Director NIFT Centre and/or Centre Coordinator.

c) Warning/Censure: a warning will be issued to the student for first offence which may not be placed in the student's record if he/she does on repeat it. However, in case of a repeat offence the censure may be placed on the student's record and may invite action under major penalties.

For Major Disciplinary Violation: Where the violation is considered to be major by the Competent Authority the following penalties may be imposed for the major disciplinary violations: a) Suspension/debarment from the Institute where the student will be declared

'persona-non-grata' and will be debarred from entering the premises, facilities and from attending the classes.

b) Permanent expulsion from the institute c) Any other course of action which may be reasonable in the circumstances For Ragging: Ragging is a punishable offence and it is strictly prohibited as per the NIFT Rules. Any complaints on this issue are to be made to the SDAC of the respective center for further action. The case should be discussed in the Campus committee meeting and recommendations sent to Head AA through the LASC. The final decision would be taken by the DG NIFT. Penalties for Cheating in any Examination (Rule 5.5.2 of Academic Manual): a) Any student found cheating at the time of examination, will not be permitted to

complete the paper/exam. Pending the result of the enquiry, he/she may be permitted to take remaining exams with an undertaking.

b) In case students are found carrying outside material, they will be debarred from giving the exams and will have to repeat the entire semester.

c) In case students are found copying from their classmates, their answer booklets will be treated as Cancelled and he/she will have to appear in re-exam.

Appeal Procedure (Rule 5.5.3 of Academic Manual): Appeal against any penalty imposed by the Competent Authority may be made to the Director General, through Head (Academic Affairs) only if any new and relevant information needs to be considered which was not available at the time of appealing that the decision of DG NIFT would be acceptable to him/her as binding.

Ragging is a punishable offence and it is strictly prohibited as per the NIFT Rules. All students have given an undertaking at the time of admission that he or she will not indulge in any such activities. Students indulging in ragging will be punished severely and punishment would include expulsion from the institute and criminal proceedings under Indian Penal laws.
