Packing Tips

program are rarely returned Label your property Rolling clothes reduces wrinkles and
conserves space Seal up any bottles that may leak in a
plastic bag Never leave your bags without a trusted
person to watch them
Packing Tips
Alumni tips?
P2P uniform
Shirts, lanyards and luggage tags are sent to my house
You provide tan khakis Capris or pants are recommended
Cell Phones
Check with your provider for international plans
Compare prices to Cellhire through P2P
Some students bring tablets or laptops, but access to wifi will be patchy. Before packing these items think about: Can we afford to replace it if its lost/stolen? Could a cell phone serve the same needs?
Pg. 22 of protocol
Communication while traveling 2 cell phones for our delegation. Emergencies only Facebook will be the main mode of
communication Emails occasionally sent if wifi is
available
Communicating while traveling - Parents
Questions or concerns during travel? Contact the program office
If your child calls you with an issue, always ask them first:Did you tell your leader??
Mail can be tricky, but you can fax a message to a hotel. Fax numbers will be provided on the accommodations list we will receive 30 days out. Label faxes with People to People, Michele Madorma and student’s name.
Google hangout – free, but only available with wifi
Communication while traveling - Delegates
Before calling home, always talk to a leader firstBe aware of time differences aka don’t call parents in the middle of the night! There is a time and a place for cell phone use: acceptable on the bus or at hotel, NOT at meal time or during programming. If you would like to send postcards while abroad – bring a list of addresses or preprinted address labelsImportant phone numbers will be on the back of your lanyard
Exchanging Money
Save American money for airport BOTH WAYS ($20)
Order money (bank, AAA) BEFORE we leave. Sometimes it can take us several days before we get to an ATM or bank. Ireland – Euro Scotland, Wales, England – Pound
Budget
Need money for any souvenirs & extra snacks
P2P recommends between $10-25 per day (18 days)
Use the budgeting tool on page 29 to ensure delegates can stretch their money out the whole trip
If possible, use a credit or debit card rather than carrying a large amount of cash
Budget Tips
Buy all supplies at home (batteries, shampoo etc.) Plan purchases before travel and discuss with a
parent Keep a log of what you bought and for whom (in
journal) Don’t buy junk! Choose quality gifts and souvenirs.
Is it something I will appreciate in a few years?
Remember! Purchase of weapons (real or fake), lighters is prohibited.
Money Options
Options recommended by other leaders (pg. 28 in protocol)
Debit card tied to a checking account (Doesn’t always work if tied to a savings account)
If cards do not work because of age restrictions at your bank, AAA prepaid card
Both options allow parents to view spending, add more money as needed & easy to cancel is lost
Add student as an authorized user of credit card (recommended on a card that is used less frequently in case of loss)
*Advise the bank of the dates and locations of our trip for security reasons and verify the card will work in each country*
Homesickness
Tips for delegates: Spend more time with new friends Participate in all activities Talk to a leader Focus on the program and fun activities Remember, it’s normal and it will pass
•Tips for parents:• Emphasize the positive• Leave notes for the delegate in their bags• Make some space – plan to talk only every
few days. Email, text of Facebook message instead.
Did you know?? Constant contact with friends and
family back home can actually increase homesickness
Staying Healthy on Program
Hydration is key! Always choose water. Eat well Update health form if changes in medical
conditions or medications Tell your leader about all medications you are
taking or any other relevant information (can’t swim/ride bike, scared of dogs etc.) (health form)
Always tell a leader Students must be able to take their own
medicine Never share medications with other delegates
Staying Healthy on Program: P2P recommendations
Enough daily medication for entire journey, plus seven days extra in case of loss or damage
Talk to doctor about time zone changes to ensure you receive proper dosage at the proper time of day
