Why address this subject?

This project will allow to have a better understanding about occupations, trades and

professions that are practised by people within your community(we use the word

‘occupation’ because it is a more general term that remove includes volunteering, working

at home and working for yourself). This project allows you to get an idea about the world

of work. You will see in your school career that self-knowledge, knowledge of the world

of school and of the world of work are important aspects that help to prepare your

orientation. This learning situation will allow you to reflect upon the world of work.

My Professional Genealogy: What does that mean?

Your professional genealogy is simply a collection of information of your family members’

occupations; your mom and dad, your grandparents, your aunts and uncles, an important

person, etc. You will need help from them in order to do your research.

Researching your professional genealogy will allow you to discover the work of the people

around you, and discover the history of occupations of people in your family, and help you

realize which occupations interest you.

3

At the end of this learning situation, you will learn

remove occupations of five different people around

you and you will be able to develop a description of

one of the occupations that you will orally present for

your peers.

‘Developing’ means that you will have to use the

information that you learned during your interview to

transform and make your information understandable

so that all of the other students in your class can,

because of your oral presentation, learn about different occupations that exist in your

community.

To prepare for your interview with the person of your choice, you will prepare a

questionnaire with the help of your peers. To help you create your own interview questions,

you will be provided with sample questions.

In your oral presentation, you will name the five occupations of the people you interviewed.

You will then select one of the five occupations for your detailed oral presentation. Within

your detailed presentation, you will need to take into account specific criteria. You may

can use many different tools to make it interesting: PowerPoint, Prezi, objects, songs, role-

play, television journalist-style interviews, etc).

While your classmates are presenting, you will need to listen attentively in order to give

them your written feedback.

your teacher) and orientation.

Preparatory Steps for this Project

1. Show your parents the letter addressed to them. This letter explains how they can help

you to investigate (they will also have received it from your teacher by email).

2. Fill in, with your parents’ help, the table called ‘Family Occupations’ on page 6. Choose

5 people or more from your family or community, and complete the form using their names.

Refer to the legend to determine what information you need to research in order to help

you choose an occupation that interests you the most and that you will present in your oral

presentation.

3. Among all of the people you talk to, you have to choose one person that you would like

to question more thoroughly about their occupation. Suggestion: You could choose

someone you get along with the best or someone who has an occupation that interests you

and piques your curiosity. It is up to you to determine how you make your choice.

4. After the interview, you will prepare your oral presentation using the information that

you have learned, and you will present it to the other students in your class. You can use

‘Repères Internet’ to find more information about your chosen occupation.

In the next few days, your teacher will give you more details so you can develop your

presentation. Your teacher will provide you with guidance in order to help you prepare

your interview questionnaires.

For each occupation that appears on the forms, you can ask: “what can I learn about the

world of work?” I also invite you to think about your personal interests while doing this

project. Would you like to do this job one day? Why? We will discuss this further toward

the end of the project.

which allowed everyone to learn about variety of occupations.
