The Mayor of The Metropolitan Borough Of Sefton 2015 - 2016 Councillor Stephen Kermode was the guest speaker at the 2015 Hugh Baird College Student Awards Evening. The annual Awards Evening honours the hard work and commitment of students from across the college.

Councillor Stephen Kermode

Cllr Kermode was born in Liverpool and went to school in Maghull.

He became an apprentice joiner for Tyson’s of Liverpool, taking a

three year apprenticeship with the company, while attending

Hugh Baird College. After working as a joiner for six years, he set up his own business

and has since gone on to win six building awards, four for the training of apprentices and

one for building a bespoke house! Cllr Kermode has been a Sefton Councillor since 2012

and was Mayor of Maghull Town Council in 2013/14.

This award is sponsored by the Taylor Fund which was set up in recognition of the

contributions made by both Arthur and Joyce Taylor to the communities of Bootle

and Sefton. Each year the prize is awarded to a student from Hugh Baird College

who has shown special effort and achievement, and who is continuing on to

higher education.

David Rigby - Vice Principal - Curriculum and PolicyCAITLIN KELLYCREATIVE ARTS

Caitlin was quiet and lacking in confidence when she started the

Creative Media course. However, her confidence has grown so

much that she is now a key team player and is approaching

people from outside of the group to contribute to her coursework.

She has thrown herself into the course and has produced

beautiful pieces of work. Caitlin's tutors say they have seen her

transform from a very shy student to a confident, bubbly

hardworking individual who will achieve wonderful results.

Katie enrolled in college after being home tutored due to health

issues. She settled into college life well and has a positive

attitude towards her course. She is exceptionally supportive to

her peers and her family, while striving to achieve her goals and

aspirations. She is a dedicated cadet of the St John’s Ambulance

service, where she has gained further health related skills. This,

combined with what she has learned from College, even enabled

her to save her father's life when he took ill earlier this year.

Katie's long term aim is to become

a paramedic.

Megan has represented the College at all open evenings and

College events. She always hands work in before deadline and

has worked hard to ensure distinctions in most assignments.

On the Music Performance course, she is a performer tutors know

they can rely on to be professional at all times, even happily giving

up her weekends if it is of benefit to the College or a good cause.

Laura is a positive student with a can-do attitude and excellent

people skills. After working as part of the Cabin Crew team at high

profile events, she was commended by influential hoteliers. Her

outstanding work even earned her a job offer at The Sir Thomas

Hotel in Liverpool. Having embraced every aspect of the Cabin

Crew course, Laura has progressed from working at McDonalds

to serving champagne to footballers in The Sir Thomas Hotel.

Leo is a mature student who decided that he wasn’t happy with

the career he was in and was going to change his life. He left full

time employment to complete a Level 3 Sport qualification with

the aim of progressing to university to study Sports Coaching. He

is an outstanding student. Leo wanted to support and add value

to his local community and he has completed extensive volunteer

work, developing his skills and experience at the same time. As a

result, he’s been offered full time work encouraging more local

young people to participate in sport.

An excellent learner, Jack is always polite and well mannered. He

has shown great support to one of his classmates, who has been

managing his studies whilst supporting his family at home. As a

result, both students have excellent attendance and even come in

to College on days off to complete extra work in order to achieve

the best possible grades. It is Jack’s support, kindness and

motivation, that has helped his classmate through some difficult

times, and it will be due to his caring attitude that both learners will

be successful this year.

When Erin enrolled on the course, she had very low self-esteem

and confidence. However, following a work experience placement

with the Beacon Project, she began to gain confidence and was

commended by staff for her progression. She has matured into an

excellent student, brimming with confidence and bubbling with

personality and positivity. Erin has a drive and commitment for

her work and goes the extra mile, exerting maximum effort and

encouraging others to do likewise.

Jo started the course when she had just returned to work from an

illness, She juggled her fight back to full health with work, home

life and studies to get to where she wanted to be. She always

strives to do her best, taking guidance and advice from feedback

and then pushing herself to complete the next project to an even

higher standard. She opened her own floristry business towards

the end of her Level 2 course and, when she realised the first

shop was not going to succeed to the standard she aspired to,

she moved it to another area to make it the thriving business she

wants it to be.

Jordan was a shy and retiring young man when he started at

Thornton College and lacked the confidence to engage with staff

and his peers. Now a very popular member of the student group,

he works hard in all sessions and uses his own initiative in

prioritising and completing tasks. He has shown a highly creative

side and much of Jordan’s work can be seen on display around

Thornton College. Jordan also plays a key role in the working

group that visit the Sefton Green Gym Community Allotment on a

weekly basis.

David Rigby - Vice Principal - Curriculum and PolicyCLAIRE KEMPTON-ROBSHAWCONSTRUCTION AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Claire really impressed all of the joinery staff at the College from

day one. Her thirst for knowledge and passion for carpentry and

joinery is obvious. Her attitude and performance is outstanding

and her ‘never give up’ attitude is to be admired. Now employed

with a joinery company, Claire’s employer is very pleased with her

and she is on track to gain her NVQ Level 2 in carpentry and

joinery. She also balances her studies and full time job with

training with the Great Britain snowboarding squad!

Emma is a dedicated and keen student who works hard at

College and has a thirst for industry knowledge. She has been

keen to take part in work-based learning within the electrical

workshop to build her skills, often taking holidays from her job to

come in and work with the Level 1 students. She works well

when faced with new and challenging problems and likes to solve

them herself by working through them in a conscientious manner.

Emma is showing progress above and beyond expectations and

has completed her course early and to a very high standard.

Ellen has developed into a star learner this year and, whilst her

academic abilities have always been evident, she has also

developed good leadership skills, acting as a mentor for her

peers. Ellen has had a very positive effect on the rest of the

group. Whilst all of the class have performed to a high standard

throughout the year, she stood out head and shoulders above the

rest of the pack. We believe her knowledge and experience

gained during the past three years will carry her forward to

achieve her individual ambitions and goals.

David Rigby - Vice Principal - Curriculum and PolicyCALLAN MCDONALDINFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Callan is usually the first to finish his work and it is of an

exceptional technical standard. He has also thrown himself into

the rest of the Study Programme, doing very well in Functional

Skills and taking part with enthusiasm in the Enrichment activities.

Callan has shown that he has the motivation and determination to

overcome his barriers. He is a very pleasant young man, often

assisting in sessions by offering help to other learners.

Julie really struggled with her confidence at the start of the year

but has stuck with it, achieving her Level 2 Make Up qualification

and progressing onto Level 3. With a hundred hours of work

experience completed, she has received excellent feedback

regarding her professionalism and her customer services. One

such placement was at a special educational needs school where

she did face painting. The school were so happy with her that

they have invited her back to do more workshops. Julie has a

very positive attitude and applies 100% effort. She has also

achieved distinctions in all her practical

assessments.

As an administrator at HMRC, Diane took on the challenge of

completing a full NVQ Apprenticeship in Management to upskill

and gain a qualification. She took on extra responsibilities within

her job to fulfil the criteria and evidence building whilst working

towards completion of the qualification. Diane had not studied

maths or English for a long time but found learning and preparing

for the assessments enjoyable and was very happy to pass them.

Diane always performs at 100%.

Jack's performance throughout the year has been outstanding.

His attendance and achievement is excellent and he has

progressed through the year raising his own standards and

helping to raise the standards of others. He worked at Nigel

Haworth's Obsession Food Festival at Northcote where he

rubbed shoulders with the World's best chefs. Jack received

outstanding comments on his commitment and skill levels.

Dean made a great impression on his tutors and colleagues right

from the beginning of term! He is a supportive friend to many of

his fellow learners. Dean has consistently shown a mature and

patient attitude, displaying skills beyond his years. He has a

tremendous passion for music and uses this to enhance his

learning during lessons. Dean has incredible self-confidence and

uses it wisely to engage in all lessons and to champion his

friends. He sets a fantastic example to others.

Raishath has worked hard to improve her English and to integrate into the wider college and

local community. She has achieved this by showing initiative and by being consistently

conscientious in her English work.

She has shown outstanding flexibility and openness to new ideas and learning contexts. Her

hard work has meant that this year she has achieved a 7 in her IELTS. This will allow her to

continue her studies in medicine.

From an academic point of view, Colette is a perfect student.

Despite missing classes due to illness, she caught up on all of her

work independently. She is an extremely valuable member of the

group, keen to learn and very encouraging of her classmates.

Colette always has a smile and a kind word for everybody. More

importantly, she has overcome tremendous personal adversity to

get to where she is today. She doesn’t always believe in herself or

have confidence but she never lets her personal circumstances

stop her. Her tutors describe her as brave, yet humble – a true

inspiration.

Danielle is completing a full time Access to Higher Education

qualification in Health and Social Care with a view to progressing

to university to achieve her goal of becoming a Primary School

teacher. As well as working part time, she supports her local

community by delivering dance classes at a community centre

and she also volunteers at a local primary school. Danielle is

friendly, caring and very supportive of classmates. She has

excelled on her course, gaining distinctions in many of her

assignments and her standard of work is always

exceptional.

Hannah has grown from strength to strength since joining the

College. She has identified what she needs to become

employable and worked hard to develop these skills. Her

confidence has grown and, through this, she has been the voice

of reason in the Principal’s focus groups and forums. She has

also made excellent academic progress, using her ambition to

drive her forward. She is enthusiastic and requested additional

work and attended extra classes to help her achieve her goals.

David Rigby - Vice Principal - Curriculum and PolicyCLAUDIA LOUGHRANOUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Claudia has overcome many challenges to attend College. She is

studying towards the Level 2 Diploma in Travel and Tourism and

Cabin Crew.

In spite of walking to and from College in all weathers, she is

always immaculately presented and on time. She is enthusiastic,

keen to learn and is always willing to assist on any events. She

has excelled in all areas of the course and makes positive

contributions in all of her lessons.

Working with the Cabin Crew at various events, her

professionalism and desire to achieve has impressed the local

hoteliers the College works with, even earning a ‘thank you’ gift of

a spa day from the General Manager at 30 James Street.
