2011 Diversity ForumThe 2011 Diversity Forum was a highlight of the year for Welcoming Intercultural Neighbours (WIN), which wasestablished in February 2010 to bring issues of diversity to the attention of theGladstone community.With a cast oflocalandnationalpersonalities,theForum,themed‘Benefitsand Challenge of Diversity’ provided the region with theopportunitytoaccesshighprofileandknowledgeablepeopleinthefieldsofeducation,employment,integration,cultureand religion. An impressive program was developed by the

Forum’sworkinggroupofvolunteers. Inaddition,WINvolunteersplayedakeypartoftheeventwithmorethan15ofitsmemberscomingtogethertoeducatethecommunityonmatters of diversity and its challenges and benefits. The 100 attendees, including agroupofhighschoolstudents,comprisedrepresentativesfromtheeducationsector,localgovernment,communityorganisations,serviceproviders,religiousorganisations,businessesandindustry.TheeventtookWIN’sForumWorkingGroupmanymonthstoplan,ensuringthe workshops, presentations and guest speakers were of a high quality to ensure goals wereachieved.Thesegoalsincluded:Teachingabouttheregion’sgrowthandhelpingpeopleunderstandhowtomakethemostofadiverseworkforce;gainingawarenessofdiversityrelatedissues;developingtoleranceinthecontextofinterculturalconflictandgrievances;andhowtocreateasafeenvironmentwhereissuessuchasprejudiceanddiversitycanbediscussed.TheForum’ssuccessalsohelpedtoraisetheprofileofthenot-for-profitWIN,whichhasachievedagreatdealsinceitsestablishmentintheregion.

2011 Annual DisplayTheGladstoneGymnasticsClub’sAnnualDisplayshowcasesthe hard work and skills of gymnasts while allowing the communitytositback,relaxandenjoyaspectacularshow.The 2011 display, ‘Movie Mania’, featured 225 gymnastsfrom the competitive and general gym programs whoperformed to songs from their favourite movies. The displayshowcasedthegymnasts’hardwork,dedicationandskills and gave them the opportunity to perform for their coaches, friends, families, localsponsorbusinessesandthe

widercommunity.Anumberofcompetitivegymnastsalsoperformedindividualroutines,tohonourtheirremarkableperformancesattheStateandNationalChampionshipsandtheBorderChallenge.TheseroutinesincludedthreeWomen’sArtisticStatemedallists,threeMen’sArtisticStatemedallists,anAcrobaticWomen’spairthatwonStateChampionshipsandcompetedatNationals,oneBorderChallengecompetitorandoneWomen’sArtisticGymnasticsNationalQualifier. The display also featured a routine by twoof the club’sLevel10Women’sArtisticGymnasts(WAG),whoachievedthehighestlevelofcompetitivegymnastics this year andwill compete in their lastWAGcompetition inHawaii inearly2012.Theeventprovidesallgymnastsattheclubachancetoshineinfrontofacrowd

ofmorethan500.TheclubwasalsopresentedwiththeClubof theYear2011titlebyGymnasticsQueenslandandseveralmembersreceivedthehighesthonourfromthestatebodyaswell for their roles inpromotingand facilitatinggymnastics.Asa result, ‘MovieMania’highlightshowanot-for-profitorganisationcansucceedthroughthededicationofmembers and supporters.

2011 Mount Larcom Show TheMount Larcom Show is a major annual event in ourregionthat isconductedinJuneeachyear.Knownas‘TheFriendly Show’ for its country hospitality, this event isorganised by a voluntary committee with assistance fromgenerousindividualsandsponsorsandattractsthousandsofpeople through its gates annually. The show provides two days of quality family entertainment through the various sectionsofcompetition,andanextensiverangeofeventsandattractions.Itisatruetraditionalagriculturalshowwithring

events,chainsawraces,farmanimals,oldmachinery,beefcattle,showjumpingandmore,butithasmoderntouchestoensureitmeetstheexpectationsofthediverseinterestsoftoday’sshow-goers.Centraltoitsoperationisamissionstatementthatreads:“Webelievethateveryoneshouldhavetheopportunitytoimmersethemselvesinatrulyuniquecountryexperience;tostepoutoftheratraceoflifefortime;toenjoytheambienceanddiversityofcountry;tofeelasenseofpridearoundourheritage,ourhistory,ourcountrytraditions;andtodothisinaninteractive,funandaffordableway…”.TheshowisregardedinshowcirclesasoneofthebiggestandbestinQueensland.Itsextensiveofferingsin2011ensuredthe committeemet its objectives and raised funds to conduct the2012 show,plus putmoneyback intothegrounds for thebenefitof themanycommunitygroupswhichusethemeachyear.

Michael Dimitrov MichaelDimitrovhasapassionformusicanduseshistalentstopositivelypromote the Gladstone Region. He has been involved in some of the biggestculturaleventsandactivities in theregionanddemonstratesastronglevelofleadershipandcommitmentrepresentingGladstone.Withthegoalofbecomingamusicteacher,Michaelhasexhibitedadedicatedandmatureapproachtowardsextendinghismusicalability.Herecentlyparticipated in the Young Conservatoriums’ StateHonours EnsembleProgramwhereheplayedaspartofa largeorchestraandgained thepracticalexperienceneededforteachingpursuits.Michaelisproficient

in saxophone, piano, flute, clarinet and violin.He has been a prominent and respectedcompetitoratGladstoneandRockhamptonEisteddfods for thepastnineyearsandfiveyearsrespectively.Michaelhasconsistentlyreceivedencouragementawards,highestmarkawardsandbursariesforperformancesonvariousinstruments.Heproudlyacceptedthe2011GladstoneEisteddfodBursary forOutstanding Local Performer. Michael has alsoplayedasignificantpartinhisschool’smusicprogram,representingtheRockhamptonRegionintheUS.Forthepasttwoyears,Michaelhasdevelopedamentoringrole,conducting20studentsinhisschool’sstageband.Heworkswiththisbandweeklytodeveloptheirskillsandencouragesmusicappreciationandenjoyment.Whilecompletingseniorschoolstudies,Michaelalsotaughtmusicprivatelytoseveralstudentshelpingtodeveloptheirtechnicalskills. EnhancingMichael’s vastmusical achievements is his determination and effort tomakeadifferencethroughextensivevolunteerworkandservicewithinthecommunity.

Thomas Hooley At18yearsofage,ThomasHooley’svoiceandpassionformusicaltheatrehas proved a rich reward for theGladstone community. Thomas hasparticipated in numerous school and communitymusical productions,including “Les Miserables” and has entertained at various publicperformancesthroughouttheregion.In2011othercreditsincludedthelead roleofUgly in theGladstone combinedhigh schoolsproductionof “Honk”, andAladdin inGladstone StateHigh’smusical production“AladdinJr”.Thomas’singingtalentshavebeenheardcompetitivelyattheGladstoneEisteddfod,Harbour Festival and in state competitionssuchasStormtheStage.Whenatschoolhismatureoutlookprovided

himwiththeperfectfoundationtosuccessfullyjugglestudying,learningguitar,singingandperformingwhileremainingconfident,courteousandthoughtful-traitsheisnowpassingontoyoungerprotégés.Thomasdemonstratedhiscommitmenttohisculturalpursuitsbyundertakingworkexperiencetogatheranincreasedunderstandingofmusicculture.Hisworkexperienceduties includedhelpingoperate theGladstoneHarbourFestival stage,ahighlightbeinghisselectionaslivecamera-personfortheJazz‘n’ShirazKateCeberanoconcert. Throughout high school, Thomas was involved in music and choir programs,assisted with fundraising initiatives and has displayed leadership abilities. He has proudly sung the national anthem at school functions, award nights and ANZACDay services.

Thomas’ activeparticipation in the local cultural scenehasencouragedhim topursueacareerintheindustryandheiseagerlyauditioningforastudyplacement.

Ayden RobertsAyden Roberts, 17, showcases his talents by participating inmany ofGladstone’sculturalperformances.MusicplaysamajorpartinAyden’slife andhe consistentlydisplayshis ability and adaptability toperformonstage.Hisrhythmicskillisexhibitedinbandsettings,playingvariousinstrumentsthroughtoprojectionofhisvoice inmusicalproductions.AGladstoneStateHighSchoolstudent,Aydenperformsinfourschoolbands.HeplaysbassandtromboneintheBigBand,changestoeuphoniumfortheConcertBand,switchestoviolaforStringsandperformsonbassfor the Symphonic line-up. Ayden attended his school’s band tour of

NewZealandandwasamemberoftheStateCoreChoirwhichperformedinCreativeGenerations inBrisbane.Excelling in all areashepursues,Aydenwasawarded the leadroleofBullfroginthecombinedschoolsmusical“Honk”andplayedtheleadcharacterJafarinGladstoneStateHighSchool’smusical“AladdinJr”.Addingtohisachievements,AydenparticipatedinvocalsattheStateHonoursEnsembleProgramattheConservatoriuminBrisbaneandsharedthesuccessofthreefirstplacingsperformingwith“VibrantVocals”(GASSA)ChoirattheGladstoneEisteddfod.AmemberoftheMaynardSingers,thegroupwonanaggregateplacingattheQueenslandEisteddfodinMaryborough.Asasolovocalistfor“InnerCityBreakdown”,AydenhasperformedatGladstone’sBattleoftheBandsandThursdayNightEvents. In2011hewasawardedtheGladstoneStateHighSchoolCyrilGoldingCulturalAwardoftheYearforthesecondconsecutiveyear.

Samuel Thompson Two years ago,with no previous backgroundor training, 16-year-oldSamuelThompsondecidedtofollowamusicaltheatredream.Throughhardwork,perseveranceanduncompromisingdetermination,Samuelisonhiswaytowardsachievinghisgoal.Samuelwasinvitedtoattenda twoweekmusical theatre course in January2012 at theUniversityofSouthernQueensland’sMcGregorSchool.Hehasmadeasignificantculturalcontributiontothecommunity,performingasamemberoftheMaynard Singers and combined school choir Vibrant Vocals. SamuelperformedatGladstoneRegionalCouncil’sMusicintheGardensinMay

2011andgavesoloandchoirperformancesatCarolsbyCandlelight.HetooktothestageintheJuniorGLOSproductionof“TheBoyfriend”,heldthreeminorrolesinthecombinedschoolsmusical“Honk”andwasasmashhitasGenieintheGladstoneStateHighSchoolmusical“AladdinJr”.Histalentshaveextendedtomakingashortfilmaspartofthe“IntheBin”touringfestivalinJuly2010andperformingattheGladstoneRegionFestivalofArts’“Surrounding SeasDreams” inAugust 2011. Samuel participated in a play competition,“ShortandSweet”,inRockhamptonandwasnominatedasoneofthebestyoungactorsforhisoutstandingperformance.Heplacedfirstinthecharacterrecital,inalightoperaduetandchoirsectionattheQueenslandEisteddfodinMaryboroughinApril2011.Atthe2011GladstoneEisteddfod,Samuelwasawardedencouragementawardsforspeechanddramaandvocal,andperformedwithVibrantVocals,thebestoverallchoir.

Beth Jones BethJoneshastaughtspeechanddramaformorethan30yearsandhasbeenactivelyinvolvedinthelocalEisteddfodforjustasmany.ShehashelpedtheGladstoneEisteddfodCommitteeforthepastsixyears,takingthe minutes, serving as Speech and Drama Coordinator and TrophyCoordinator at the Eisteddfod. Beth prepares many students, both as individuals and in groups, for the Gladstone Eisteddfod, guides them through Trinity Guildhall and AMEB speech and drama examinations,and assists students prepare for university auditions. Beth passes on her loveofteachingtoherstudents,preparesolderstudentsandadultsfor

teachingcertificatesinspeechanddrama,andhelpsotherteacherspreparetheirstudents.Bethworkswithawiderangeofstudentsagedfivetoadult,allwithvaryingabilitiesandneeds, including special needs students experiencing speech languagedisorders,AutismSpectrum Disorder, Aspergers Syndrome, hearing impairment and various learningdisabilities.Sheisanadvocateforpeoplewithspecialneedsandhasproventhatallchildrenarecapableoflearningandappreciatingpoems,proseanddrama,teachingthemnewskillsand helping thembecome confident performers and speakers. Beth’s personal belief isthattheEnglishlanguageisrichindiversityandbeautyandthatweareallthebetterforexploringthispartofourculturalheritage.

Natalia Muszkat Since relocating to Gladstone four years ago, Natalia has dedicatedher time here to assist newly arriving migrants settle in the Gladstone Region. Natalia was instrumental in establishing the Women’sInterculturalNetwork,nowcalledWelcomingInterculturalNeighboursInc,whichboasts500networkmemberssinceitsinception18monthsago.Thisinitiativeseekstorespondtotheemergingcommunityneedsofourgrowinganddiversepopulation.NataliasourcedfundingforthenetworktoprovideservicesandprogramsthatincludeEnglishclasses,first aid courses, community classes,weekly information sessions and

assistancetoschoolstudentswhenEnglishistheirsecondlanguage.Nataliabelievesthata community is always betteroffwheneveryoneworks together tomake themostofthings.Nataliahascoordinatedanumberofculturaleventsoverthepastyear, includingGladstone’s Cultural Diversity Forum, Indonesia End of Year celebrations, a CaribbeanNightandhasalsoconductedanumberofschoolpresentationsregardingculturaldiversityin theGladstoneRegion.Herworkensures thecommunityembraces itsnewresidentsandsherepresentstheculturallydiverseneedsofthecommunityinorganisationsincludingtheWomen’sHealthCentre, SexualAssaultNetwork,GladstoneCommunityGardens,Early Childhood Network, Gladstone Communities for Children, Coordinated Community ResponsetoDomesticViolenceandFamilyViolence, InterculturalReferenceGroupandthroughinteragencymeetings.NataliaisaleaderinprovidingprogramsandservicesthatassistmigrantstoquicklyintegrateintotheRegion,encouragenewresidentstovolunteertheirtimeforthecommunity’sbenefit,andprovidevaluable informationtonewcomersabout living in Australia.

Eliza ArmitageAll-rounder Eliza Armitage’s passion for sport is evidenced by herstrong performances across a number of codes, both in school andclub competition. A member of a well-known Gladstone sportingfamily, Eliza’s versatility earnedherPortCurtis selection in volleyball,softball andhockey, goingon a step further to representCapricorniainsoftballandhockey.AmemberofGladstoneStateHigh’sVolleyballSchoolofExcellenceprogramforfiveyears,Elizawontheschool’s2011Senior Sportsperson of the Year Award. She has also proved to be a valuablememberoftheSouthstopgradewomen’ssoftballandhockeyteams, continuing a strong family tradition by turning out in the blue

andwhite inboth codes. Lessons learnton the region’s fields and courtshave resultedinElizadevelopingstrongleadershipskills,asevidencedbytheAustralianDefenceForceLongTanLeadershipandTeamworkAwardshereceivedin2010.Eliza’scommitmenttoachievingthebestpossibleresultsinavarietyofsportsisduplicatedinotherareasofherlife.Her continualdrive for improvement,both in teampractice and through individualtraining,didnotpreventherfromachievingacademicsuccessanddisplayingacommitmenttocommunityservice.ElizacompetedintheInternationalCompetitionsandAssessmentsforSchools(ICAS)andRioTintoBigSciencecompetitionsandreceivedGladstoneHigh’sYear 12AcademicAward for physical education. Elizawas also school vice captain andassistedwith the2011MayoralBreakfast and loanedherefforts tohelping the region’sVietnamveterans.

Ryan BeecroftSurfLifeSavingQueenslandisthebeneficiaryofthetalentsofall-rounderRyanBeecroft,whohashadastellar2011insurflifesavingcompetition.Ryan, 17, is involved in all facets of surf lifesaving - surf sport, poolrescueandsurfrescue. He returned from the nationals with a team gold medal. Achieving an AustralianGolfingUnion handicap of 9.7 by September2011,andmaintainingittotheseason’send,LachlanbecameamemberofaveryelitefewinCQtorecordtheachievementatsuchatenderage.Lachlanhasalsohadsignificant success inCQandNorthQueenslandevents in 2011, winning two of the three rounds of the Townsville

Talia Galbraith Talia Galbraith, 17, strives to excel and reached new heights in hergymnasticssuccessin2011.TaliastartedtheyearatLevel8andended2011 achieving Level 10, the highest honour in Women’s ArtisticGymnasticsatanationallevel.Taliacontinuestoimpresscoacheswithhercommitmenttothesportaswellasheroverallphysicalstrength.Shecompetedinsixeventsduringthecompetitiveseason,finishingsecondAll-AroundatthreeeventsinLevel8;firstAll-AroundtwiceinLevel9(includingclubchampion)andthirdAll-AroundinLevel10.AhighlightforTalia in2011wasselection in theQueenslandteamat theBorderChallenge to represent her State against New South Wales in Level 8

competition.Shehasalsoexpandedhergymnasticchallenges,nowexperiencingsuccessasajudge.Asabeginnerwomen’sgymnasticsjudge,Taliajudgedatalloftheclub’stermevents and invitationals throughout the year. Talia’s commitment to training, drive andendurancemakesher an ideal rolemodel for young gymnasts.After a successful 2011,Taliawaspreparingtoendhercompetitivegymnasticscareeronahigh,participatingathersecondinternationalcompetitionrecentlyinHawaii.Shehasplayedanimportantroleinclubfundraising,wasapresenterataclubluncheonandhashelpedatotherfundraisingevents.Taliaconsistentlydemonstratescommitmenttoallofhervariedpursuits.ShealsocelebratedcrosscountrysportingsuccesswithasecondatschoollevelandafifthatthePort Curtis trials.

Skye Henebery Level 6 gymnast Skye Henebery has attended Gladstone GymnasticsClubsinceApril2009andhashadaremarkableclimbtosuccess.Theoutstandinggymnasthasachievedplacingsineverycompetitionshehascompetedinandhasquiteoftenfinishedfirst.Skye’sdedicationtothesportcontinuestoimpresswithhersuccessatributetothehardworkshe has exhibited in her short involvementwith gymnastics. In 2010,shewas first overall at the regional championships and dominated atallcompetitions.SkyereceivedrecognitionforherachievementsandinJulyshewasprivilegedtobeoneoftwogirlsinvitedbytheQueenslandAcademyofSporttotrialforaplaceintheHighPerformanceProgram.

Thetrialexperiencewasinvaluable.ShetestedinfrontofthecurrentOlympicWomen’sGymnasticcoachandwhileshemissedoutonaplace,Skyeisrequiredtoattendagainin2012.Addingtoherachievements,SkyeattendedtheQueenslandStateChampionshipsinJuneandplacedsecondonunevenbars,fourthonfloorandfifthoverall.SkyewasinvitedtoattendaHighPerformanceClinicatMoretonBayCollegeinDecemberandhasbeenbusytrainingtowardsaninternationalgymnasticseventinHawaiiin2012.Hersportingsuccessextendedto includeschool representation in swimmingandathletics,withselection forCentralQueenslandtrials.Whilemaintainingabusygymnasticstrainingschedule,SkyehasalreadyearnedrespectforbeingaGladstoneRelayForLifeteamcaptainandheractivefundraisingtosupportcancerresearch.

Josh HorkingsUp-and-comingMiriamVale golfer JoshHorkingswent from strengthto strength in 2011 when he stamped himself as one of the most rapidly improvedjuniorsinCentralQueensland.Josh,14,isarelativenewcomerto golf but has already shown a highly developed sense of sportsmanship. Hehas also impressedwith his commitment to improving himself byspending countless hours training at the course each week. Chloe Jess Surf lifesaving isChloe Jess’sfirstpassion,but thecapablecompetitoris often among the medals at Gladstone Swimming Club meets. Chloe amassed an impressive list of achievements during the 2010-11 surflifesaving season, particularly impressing in her favoured championlifesaver category consisting of surf swim, beach sprint, rescue tubeandboardevents,plusthecompletionofa40questionmultiplechoiceexamandresuscitationexamination.Theunder-15competitorfinishedthird at the Australian championships and at the LaerdalQueenslandchampionships,secondattheNorthAustraliantitlesandclaimedvictoryat the Wide Bay Capricorn championships. Chloe, who consistently

trains for swimming and surf lifesaving, has been with Tannum Sands Surf Lifesaving Club for11seasons.Asapatrollingmemberoftheclub,Chloecompletesmorethan40hoursofactivedutyeachseasonanddespiteherbusyschedule,oftenfindstimetohelptheclubwithitsfundraisingefforts.Inthepoolrescuesurf lifesavingevent,Chloe’ssuccessesatNorthQueenslandandWideBaychampionshipsledtoherselectionfortheQueenslandCountry Team. She proved herself to be as at home in the swimming pool as she is in the surfwhenshewonthe2.5kmopenwaterswimand400mfreestyle(U14)eventsattheLiquid Energy Carnival held in Gladstone in November 2010 and she gained several medals attheHarbourCityCarnivalandCentralQueenslandSwimmingChampionshipsin2011.Intheoff-season,Chloeplaysandumpiresnetball.

Poppy LarsonPoppyLarson’s netballing career is set followingher selection for theCarina Leagues Club Tigers State League Netball Team in Brisbane in 2012. The talented Capricorn Claws regional team and QueenslandErgonEnergyCapricornAcademymemberexcelsintaskssetdownforher and is a role model for others. The year 2011 has seen her travel state-wide,asfarnorthasCairnsandsouthtoBrisbane,asamemberoftheClawsteam,earningherselfthe2011CapricorniaClawsFlamankShooterAwardforaccuracyintheprocess.ShewastheYarallaSportsStar of the Year monthly award winner for July and was voted by her peersasSeniorPlayeroftheYearfortheGladstoneandDistrictNetball

Association. Hannah enjoyed thesweet taste of success in October as part of the undefeated U13girlsQueenslandhockey team.Competingat thenational titleswasahighlight for Hannah when the State team won the gold medal. Donning Queensland representative colours provided a rewarding experienceforHannah’s commitment to the team sport.Hannah has continuallyimpressedasacompetentandconfidenthockeyplayerwithdedicationtohersportresultinginnumerousclubawards.ShewasnamedSparks

HockeyClub’sMostOutstandingJuniorPlayeranddefeatedstrongcompetitiontoscorethe Gladstone Hockey Association’s Most Promising Junior Player. Throughout 2011Hannahalsodisplayedhersportingabilityoffthehockeyfield.Shenotonlyemphasisedtheimportanceofbeingagoodsportinateameventbutshowedherfocusanddrivetosucceedin individual pursuits. The keen swimmer dived in at the State Sprint Titles at Chandler, Brisbaneandhada successful swim, snaring a silvermedal in the50mbreaststroke.AtGladstoneclublevel,HannahwontheWesternSuburbsSwimmingClub’sClubChampionAward.Toppingoffherswimmingaccomplishmentsfor2011,shewasnamedrunner-upagechampionattheCentralQueenslandSwimmingChampionships.Hannahprovedspeedin the swimmingpoolwasnotheronly strength.Participating in school sports,Hannahdisplayedherall-roundsportingtalentsasastrongcontenderontheathleticstrackwhenclaimingthe100mand200mracesattheInterschoolAthleticsCarnival.

Keecia Mallie GymnasticshasplayedamajorroleinKeeciaMallie’slifeforthepast14years.Keecia’s dedication and commitment to trainingwas rewardedin 2011when she achieved Level 10, the highest national gymnasticslevel in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics. As an Assistant Coach underthe club Challenge Achievement Pathways program, Keecia is anactivementor, training young girls starting in the competitive stream.She is a beginner ACRO judge and an intermediate bronzewomen’sgymnastics judge. Besides training, coaching and judging Keecia helpswithchoreographyandfundraisingeventsandhasshowcasedhertalentsasaspeakerandsinger.Keeciaspends18to20hoursperweektraining

fortheWomen’sArtisticandAcrobaticGymnasticsprograms.Shesuccessfullycompetedin 2011with first and second all-aroundplacings and,with her partner, finished first intheLevel5Women’sPairsintheironlyacrobaticcompetition.ThepairwasselectedasareservefortheQueenslandAcrobaticteam.Keecia’sstrongperformanceshaverewardedherwithplacingsatRegionals fromLevel4to10,winning levels from2006to2009. Cian FothergillThe year 2011 has continued the pattern of amazing outcomes forGladstone Kart Club member Cian Fothergill. On the back of hisincredible 2010 success which earned him numerous awards andaccolades,includingbeingthewinnerofthepremiereventofAustraliankarting(theCommissionInternationaledeKarting[CIK]Series intheKF1class),Cian’sskill,hardworkanddedicationhascontinuedtopayoffwithastringofimpressiveresultsatlocal,state,interstate,nationaland international level in2011.His listofachievements includesbeingthefastestqualifierandnationalchampionintwoseparateraceclasses-

ClubmanLightandLeopardLight;QueenslandStateChampioninoneclassandrunner-upinanother;aswellasrunner-upintheNewSouthWalesStateChampionshipsandmajorplacegetter at the Victorian StateChampionships. Lewis MarshallGladstone cyclist LewisMarshall isCyclingQueensland’s SeniorRoadCyclistoftheYear,atitlehewonafteralmostcleansweepingthemajormastercyclingevents inQueenslandandAustralia in2011.Lewis,52,travels fromGladstonetohishomeclubatRockhamptonthreetimesaweek fortraining,as it is thenearestcyclingclubtoGladstone,andspends countless hours on the road annually to compete against thenation’s best. Despite his training regime that was hampered by thefloodingofearly2011,Lewis’shardworkbaggedhimaswagof titlesin 2011. He is the reigning Australian Masters Champion of Champions (Road 2011); Australian Masters Road Criterium Champion 2011;

QueenslandMastersRoadCriteriumandTimeTrialChampion;QueenslandMastersTrack- Individual PursuitChampion; andQueenslandMasters Track Scratch RaceChampion.AttheAustralianMastersGamesinAdelaidein2011,Lewiscapturedgoldinroadeventsas well as track events, including the Road Criterium, Time Trial, Individual Pursuit2000mandScratchRace,plus silver in theSprint andTimeTrial 500mevents.HealsowastheMaryboroughMastersRoadChampion,RockhamptonCyclingClubAgradetrackchampion,winnerofCalliopeClassic (Category3)120kilometreroadraceandwinneroftheGoldFeverLeTour(Category3)StageRaceRoad2011thatwasheldatChartersTowers/Townsville. Mark Bryant The surf lifesaving movement is all the better for having Mark Bryant aspartofit.Mark,asanactivememberoftheTannumSandsSurfLifeSaving Club, has shown passion and leadership in everything he has achievedduringthepastdecadeofservice.Markwearsmultiplehatsattheclubandspendscountlesshoursvolunteeringintheprocess.Heisthecurrentjuniorclubcoach,steeringthetraininganddevelopmentof100 Nippers aged nine to 14 years throughout the surf lifesaving season. Asjuniorclubtrainingofficer,Markworkswiththeclub’strainingofficertoensurethatalljuniorsareproficientandachievetheirappropriatesurf

lifesavingawards.Aschairpersonofthejuniordevelopmentgroup,heleadsacommitteeinorganisingdevelopmentclinicsforthejuniorsandperformstheassociatedadministrationwork.He is also the youth development officer for the club and has been responsiblefor presenting a framework and five-year plan to encourage local youth to continue toparticipate in all aspects of surf lifesaving. Mark is also patrol captain, spending manyvoluntaryhoursonthebeachoverseeingpatrolsandensuringbeachsafetyforall.HeisaLevel1officialandexpectstoreceivehisLevel2authorisationsoon.Markperformsofficialdutiesatalljuniorbranchcarnivals,theNorthAustralianChampionshipsandQueenslandjuniortitles,andholdsthepositionofcarnivalrefereeatlocalcarnivals.Markandhisfamilyalsosupporttheclubthroughtheiractiveparticipationinfundraisingactivities.

Owen HarmsOwenHarmswentfromplayertocoach,president,secretary,treasurerandLifeMemberoftheMiriamValeRugbyLeagueClub(Magpies).Alwaysactingselflesslyinhisrolesattheclub,OwengoesaboveandbeyondtokeeptheclubandplayersactiveandcompetingintheNorthernDistrictsRugbyLeaguecompetition.TheMagpieshaveOwentothank for theimprovementstotheirfacilities,ashespendscountlesshoursmowingandlinemarking,aswellasorganisinggamedayfunctionsincludingthebar,foodandraffles.Throughhisroleaspresident,OwenhassecuredfundingfortheenhancementworkstotheGaryLarsonOval,includinglighting,automatedwateringsystemandplayerenclosures.Realisingthe

needforfurtherfacilities,OwencoordinatedtheGaryLarsonOvalEnhancementGroupandsoughtfundingforanewclubhouse.HishardworkpaidoffwhenhewasadvisedinOctober2011thattheFederalGovernmentwouldfundtheentireclubhouseprojecttothevalueof$280,000.MiriamValesportinggroupsandthewidercommunitywillbenefitgreatlyfromthisproject.OwenisalsoOfficerinChargeoftheMiriamValePoliceStationand holds numerous community roles, including Adopt-a-Cop, NeighbourhoodWatch,presidentoftheMiriamValeStateSchoolP&C,LionsClubmemberandCleanUpAustraliaDaycoordinatorforMiriamVale.ItisthesmallthingsthatOwendoesforboththerugbyleagueclubandthecommunitythatmakehimagreatambassadorfortheMiriamValearea.

Kevin Howard Gladstone-bornKevinHowarddemonstratesanunrelentingdedicationand determination towards strengthening and maintaining interest in regional volleyball. Kevin has provided voluntary leadership and governance of the Gladstone Volleyball Association for more than10 years. His extensive contribution has been recognised with aDistinguishedServiceAwardbythesport’sparentbody,theQueenslandVolleyballAssociation (trading asVolleyballQueensland). In a decade,Kevinhasheldthepositionofclubpresidentandprimaryadministratorofthe long-runningandverysuccessfulsocialcompetition.Asadirect

result of his energies and efforts, there are currently over 20 teams competing everyThursdaynightonthreecourtvenuesinGladstone.Thisequatestoabout150registeredvolleyballplayersofbothgenders,aged13to50.Kevinalsocontributestothedevelopmentof the sport at a higher level. He has held the seat of Central Queensland Directoron theBoardofVolleyballQueensland for thepast five years. In this role, heprovidesjudicious stewardship andmuch-needed advocacy for the sport inCentralQueensland.Kevin provides a significant contribution to the sport that extends beyond ourCouncilboundaries.He provides his time and expertise as a coach at various schools,meetingallexpenseshimselfforthebettermentofthesport.Hecoachesschoolteams,includingGladstoneStateHigh,Calliope,GladstoneCentral,KinKora,MountLarcom,FaithBaptist,South,BenarabyandMoura.Kevinisdirectlyresponsiblefortheannualinter-citychallengebetweenGladstone,Gympie,KingaroyandBundaberg,offeringcompetitionfordevelopingelite-levelathletesthroughoutCentralQueensland.

Julie Maeyke Julie Maeyke was one of the driving forces in re-establishing theGladstoneDistrictDirtridersClubin1996andhasheldseveralpositionsintheclubduringthepast12years,mostrecentlyasthesecretaryandracesecretary.Juliehasplayedanintegralroleintheclub’sdevelopment,bothonandoffthetrack.In1998,aftertheclubwasforcedtorelocatetoavacantblockoflandatBenaraby,constructionofatrackwasfirstonJulie’sagenda.Overtime,withfundsgeneratedfromtheclubandgrantsreceived, the club has built a new canteen, relocated a toilet block,constructedlapscorerhuts,shadedstartareasandfencedtheallotmentandJuliewasinvolvedateverystep.Whatstartedasavacantblockis

nowapremiermotocross facility andyet Julie is still striving formore. She is currentlyinvolvedwithbuildingtheBenarabyMotorsportscomplexintoahubformotorsportsinCentralQueenslandandshewillholdthesecretary’sposition forthisorganisationoncecomplete.SheisalsoaLevel3,stateandnationalaccreditedraceofficial,whichallowshertoruneventsattheirBenarabytrack.Theyear2012willseethetrackhostatleastthreemajorevents.Juliehasreceivednumerousawardsovertheyearsforherinvolvementwiththesport, including the2009MotorcyclingQueenslandOfficialof theYearand theCQMoto Mania Sports Administrator Award in 2010. She was honoured with Life Membership to the Gladstone Dirtriders Club in 2009.

Anna Turetschek In1977,AnnaTuretscheksetoutonamissiontoteachthechildrenofGladstonethesportshelovedsomuch,gymnastics,andwiththattheGladstoneGymnasticsClubwasborn.Herclub’smissionwastoprovideagymnasticsprogramtothegreaterGladstonecommunitysothateachmembercanmaximisetheirmovementpotentialandsportingpersonalgoals through gymnastic sports. Thirty-five years later, Anna remainsheavilyinvolvedintheclub’sdailyoperationsasacoach,judgeandeventcoordinator.Theyear2011sawAnnare-introducetheCAPS(ChallengeAchievementPathwayinSport)programwhichidentifiesyouthtoserve

Curtiscrosscountrytrials.Taliaappliesthedriveandendurancesheexhibitsinhersportingpursuitstohercommunitycontributions.Aresponsibleattitudeandleadershipabilityhassupportedherstronginvolvementinfundraisingforcommunityevents.ShehasparticipatedintheRedShieldDoorknockAppeal,Gladstone’sBotanictoBridgefunrunandtheMaterLittle Miracles Walk. She has supported the Leukaemia Foundation by participating inGladstoneHigh’sCrazyHairDay,representedtheschoolattheANZACDayparade in2011,andprovidedvoluntaryhelpataseniorcitizen’sdinner.TaliahasservedaspresidentofInteractforGladstoneStateHighSchoolandwasawardedherschool’sBestAll-RounderAwardin2010.Taliaisalsopartofherschool’sSeniorStudentCouncilExecutiveandhasattendedtheInternationalScienceSchoolandNationalYouthScienceForum,competedintheGladstoneEisteddfod,andassistedwiththeNAPLANandChaplain’sbreakfasts.

Skye Henebery At 14 years of age, Skye Henebery has earned the honour of being the city’syoungestGladstoneRelayforLifeteamcaptain.Skyehasshowna levelof commitmentbeyondher teenageyears, avidly raising fundsto support cancer research. That commitment has served Skye wellin her gymnastics career.As a champion gymnast, SkyewonmultiplecompetitionsthroughoutQueenslandin2011,includingmajorplacingsattheStateTitles.Despiteherbusytrainingschedule,Skyehasdevotedmanyhourstofundraisingforcancerresearch,hereffortshelpingpeopleofallageswhohavebeenstruckbyvariousformsofthedisease.Shehas assisted teenagerswith cancer through the sale of bandannas for

CANTEEN’sBandannaDay.SkyealsoraisedfundstocontributetobreastcancerresearchandenthusiasticallyorganisedandledateamtoparticipateintheGladstoneRelayforLifeevent.Skyeandherteam,cleverlynamedHeavenCanWait,raised$1517anddedicatedanighttowalklapsofGladstone’sChanelCollegeovalinmemoryofpastcancerpatientsandinsupportofthosediagnosedwithcancer.Skyemaintainsabusyschedulecontributingto the support of disadvantaged youth. She is a responsible role model for her peers and iswellknownandrespected forher fundraisingeffortsandparticipation in localcharityevents.Skyedisplaysawillingnesstoassistothersandiskeentodevelopthistraittofulfilherdesireofbecomingafostercarerwhenshereachestherequiredage.

Mark Bryant The surf lifesaving movement is all the better for having Mark Bryant aspartofit.Mark,asanactivememberoftheTannumSandsSurfLifeSaving Club, has shown passion and leadership in everything he has achievedduringthepastdecadeofservice.Markwearsmultiplehatsattheclubandspendscountlesshoursvolunteeringintheprocess.Heisthecurrentjuniorclubcoach,steeringthetraininganddevelopmentof100 Nippers aged nine to 14 years throughout the surf lifesaving season. Asjuniorclubtrainingofficer,Markworkswiththeclub’strainingofficertoensurethatalljuniorsareproficientandachievetheirappropriatesurf

lifesavingawards.Aschairpersonofthejuniordevelopmentgroup,heleadsacommitteeinorganisingdevelopmentclinicsforthejuniorsandperformstheassociatedadministrationwork.He is also the youth development officer for the club and has been responsiblefor presenting a framework and five-year plan to encourage local youth to continue toparticipate in all aspects of surf lifesaving. Mark is also patrol captain, spending manyvoluntaryhoursonthebeachoverseeingpatrolsandensuringbeachsafetyforall.HeisaLevel1officialandexpectstoreceivehisLevel2authorisationsoon.Markperformsofficialdutiesatalljuniorbranchcarnivals,theNorthAustralianChampionshipsandQueenslandjuniortitles,andholdsthepositionofcarnivalrefereeatlocalcarnivals.Markandhisfamilyalsosupporttheclubthroughtheiractiveparticipationinfundraisingactivities.

Cecily Burkett Boyne Island resident Cecily Burkett, a former teacher, has been anactivemember of the community during the past four decades. It isthroughherdedicationandkindnessthatshehasbecomeawellknownlocal identity. A seven yearmember of the Boyne Island LionsClub,Cecily is the club’s currentpublicityofficer and secretary. She servedasYouthof theYearChairpersonforsevenyears;herduties includedorganisingclub,zoneandregionaljudgingeventsandencouragingseniorhighschoolstudentstoparticipateinpublicspeakingcontests.In2010,thewithdrawalofgovernmentfundingfortheBoyneIslandLowVision

SupportGroupresultedinCecilyorganisingfundingthroughtheBoyneIslandLionsClubtokeepthegroupoperating.Cecilynowpreparesmonthlyoutings,transportandsocialinteractionsforthisgroup.ShealsovolunteerswiththeStVincentdePaulSociety,assistingin the sorting of donations and taking garments home to mend for sale. Her generosity alsobenefitstheSt.PeterChanelCatholicChurchinTannumSands,where,assecretaryof the Pastoral LeadershipGroup, she organises social activities for the church’s familygroup.CecilyisalsoanactivememberofGladstoneLegacy,lookingaftersocialinterestsofwarwidowsand fundraising;performsstallcoordinatorduties for thepopularBeachArtsMusic (BAM)monthlyevents;and ishighlyregarded forhostingandorganising theNeighbourhoodChristmaspartyatherhome for thepastfiveyears,encouragingsocialinteractionbetweenupto30neighbours.

Owen HarmsOwen Harms has gone from player to coach, president, secretary,treasurer and Life Member of the Miriam Vale Rugby League Club(Magpies)overtheyears.Alwaysactingselflesslyinhisrolesattheclub,Owengoesaboveandbeyondtokeeptheclubandplayersactiveandcompeting in theNorthernDistricts Rugby League competition. TheMagpieshaveOwentothankfortheimprovementstotheirfacilities,ashespendscountlesshoursmowingandlinemarking,aswellasorganisinggamedayfunctionsincludingthebar,foodandraffles.Throughhisroleas president,Owen has secured funding for the enhancementworkstotheGaryLarsonOval,includinglighting,automatedwateringsystem

andplayerenclosures.Realisingtheneedforfurtherfacilities,OwencoordinatedtheGaryLarsonOvalEnhancementGroupandsoughtfundingforanewclubhouse.HishardworkpaidoffwhenhewasadvisedinOctober2011thattheFederalGovernmentwouldfundtheentireclubhouseprojecttothevalueof$280,000.MiriamValesportinggroupsandthewidercommunitywillbenefitgreatlyfromthisproject.OwenisalsoOfficerinChargeoftheMiriamValePoliceStationandholdsnumerouscommunityroles, includingAdopt-a-Cop,NeighbourhoodWatch,presidentoftheMiriamValeStateSchoolP&C,LionsClubmemberandCleanUpAustraliaDaycoordinator forMiriamVale. It is the small thingsthatOwendoesforboththerugbyleagueclubandthecommunitythatmakehimagreatambassadorfortheMiriamValearea.

Sally HeapWhenSallyHeapmovedtoTurkeyBeachthreeandahalfyearsago,shebroughtwithherawealthofknowledgeandexperiencegainedduring13yearsasaStateEmergencyServiceofficerinthreedifferentstates.Sallyimmediatelyputheryearsofexperiencetowork,signingupasaQueenslandAmbulance Service trainedTurkeyBeach first responder.Thisgroupof local residents is contactedwhena000call is receivedinthearea.Respondersthenreporttotheemergencysiteandprovidebasicfirstaiduntil thearrivalof theambulanceandparamedic,asthenearestambulanceis35minutesfromTurkeyBeach.Asafirstresponder,Sallyprovides lifesavingtreatmentandreassurance,andrelayscritical

patient informationtorespondingparamedics.Sally investsuntoldtimeandeffort inhervolunteerrole,workingwithempathyandcompassionandprovidingapersonal serviceaboveandbeyondthecallofduty.SallyalsosignedupasaTurkeyBeachRuralFirefighterandmemberoftheTurkeyBeachProgressAssociationwhenshemovedtothearea. In2011shewaselectedvicepresidentoftheProgressAssociation.Sallyalsoraisesfundsforvariousevents,helpingboostcommunityspiritintheprocess.Sheisalsoanadvocateforcancerawareness,organising‘GirlsNightIn’fundraisingeveningseachyeartoraisemoneyforwomen’scancertreatmentandprograms.TheTurkeyBeachcommunityhasbenefitedfromSally’sexperienceinrespondingtoemergenciesanddisastersandherdedicationtothecommunityissecondtonone.

Geoff Lester Apersonalexperiencewithprostatecancerin2004hasdrivenGladstonemanGeoffLester’spassiontohelpothers.Geoff,inhiseffortstohelpsavemen’s lives, formed theGladstone andDistrict ProstateCancerSupportGroupin2005andwasthenselectedasanambassadorfortheProstateCancerFoundationofAustralia in2006. Inhisambassadorialrole, Geoff has delivered numerous prostate cancer education andawareness talks at public events, work places, community groupgatheringsandtosportingteamsinGladstone,Rockhampton,Yeppoon,Biloela, Monto, Moura and Mount Morgan. Those attending his sessions

haveoftenprovided feedbacksuggestingGeoff’spassionandempathyhavecontributedsignificantly to thesuccessof theprogramandensured thekeymessageshavereachedtheirintendedaudience.InrecentyearsGeoffextendedtheeducationprogramtocoverallaspectsofhealthspecifictomen,notjustprostatehealth.Hismotivefordoingthiswastoeducatemenontheimportanceofrecognisingandattendingtochangesintheirbodies,andtothevalueofhavingregularhealthchecks.Geoffisalsoknownforhistirelessworkinhelpingorganisethe“NoJokeBlokes”campaigninNovember2011.Thiseventbroughtcricket iconMervHughesandtwohighlyregardeddoctorstoGladstonetoattend fourmen’shealtheducationsessionsoverthecourseoftwodays.Attractingalmost300peoplefromarangeofbackgrounds,the“NoJokeBlokesYourHealthYourChoice”campaignwashugelysuccessfulinachievingitsobjectives.

John Massey Quick thinking by John Massey and his crew of New South Walesvisitors prevented possible drownings at Tannum Sands in June. John andhisvisitorswereapproachingtheBoyneRivermouthafterhavingcompleted a day’s fishing off the coast when John witnessed a boatcapsize, throwing a father and his three children into the water. Heimmediatelynoticed the childrenwere struggling tokeep their headsabovewater.Whileoccupantsofotherboatswere frozen in inaction,John immediately drove towards the struggling swimmers, positioning hisboatso thathiscrewcouldhaul thestricken foursomeoutof thewater.WithoutthequickreactionofJohnandhiscrew,theincidentmay

haveendedtragically.TheactiontypifiedJohn’swillingnesstohelpothers,withtheTannumSandsresidentboastingalonghistoryofdedicatedcommunityservice.FromanearlyageJohnvolunteeredasaLionsclubandbushfirebrigademember.HealsojoinedtheArmyReservesandreceivedtheCadetoftheYearAwardforhisdedicationandcommitmenttothecause.HisdesiretoservethecommunityremainsintactasevidencedbyhiscurrentmembershipoftheTannumSandsFireBrigadewhichoftenrequireshimtoassistatroadaccidentsandhelpfellowresidentsintimesoftrouble.Johnisalsopartofanemergencyresponse team at his place of employment, his experience in dealing with potentiallydangerous situations making him a valuable asset to his employer and fellow employees.

Greg Realf GregRealf,aformerMiriamValeCouncillor,hasdedicatedmorethan15yearsof service to the local community,providinghis friendly andapproachablepersonalitytomanydifferentorganisations.Hehasbeenaninstrumentalpartinraisingfundsfornumerouslocalcharitieswhileworking for the Gladstone Area Promotion and Development Limited (GAPDL) based in Miram Vale. Greg’s contributions include beingcurrent president of theMiriam Vale Lions Club; a 10 yearmember(fouraspresident)oftheMiriamValeParentsandCitizensCommittee;executivememberofQueenslandInformationCentreAssociation;and

member of the Gary Larson Oval Enhancement Group, Miriam Vale Magpies FootballClubandLocalMarineAdvisoryCommittee,andfiveyearsinvolvementwithMiriamValeRuralScienceandLandcare.HeisalsowellknownforhisinvolvementintheBaffleCreekCatchmentManagementGroup;beingthefoundingpresidentofMiriamValeCommunityDevelopmentIncorporatedandgroupleaderoftheMiriamValeStateEmergencyServiceforthreeyears.Greghasalsoledseveralcommunitydevelopmentprojects,includingtheheritageregistrationoftheiconiclocalfigtreeandconstructionofaviewingdeck;ayouthshelterdesignworkshopandconstructionproject;theMiriamValeGreenCorpsprogram;andtheMiriamValeEnhancementPlan.Greg’spassionforhiscommunityhasalsoledhimtoinitiateseveralprogramssuchasthedevelopmentanddeliveryofaruralleaderscourse;seagrassmonitoring in theBaffleCreekcatchment;coordinateschoolwatermonitoringworkshops,andhelporganiseleaseagreementsforamen’sshed,youthcentreandLionsClub den.

David RobyDavidRobyworkedasacarpenterbeforechangingcareerstoworkasaChaplainatToolooaStateHighSchool.Throughhischaplaincyrole,Davidisabletocontributetothecommunityheissopassionateabout,leadingnumerousyouthcampsandprograms,includingaprogramforatriskgirls,called‘Shine’,whichaimstohelpbuildtheirself-esteemandconfidence.InSeptember,DavidrodehisbicyclefromtheGoldCoastto Sydney to raisemoney for ‘Break theCycle’, a charity advocatingfortheworld’spoorbyraisingawarenessandassistingchildrenlivinginextremepoverty.TheridetookplacefromSeptember24toOctober2andthisyear’sfundsraisedwillgotoprogramsrunbyEaglesWings,an

organisationworkingwithchildreninpovertyinZambiaandothercountriesinSouthernAfrica.DavidalsorodefromGladstonetoBrisbaneinJanuaryraisingfundsforCompassionAustraliaandhelpedcoordinatethe2011TourdeChaplainfromManyPeakstotheMarina,abikeridefundraisingfortheworkofSchoolChaplainsintheGladstoneDistrict.DavidalsoworkswithyoungmentohelpthemrealisetheirpotentialthroughActionBasedLearningand,withthelittlesparetimehehas,facilitatesamentoringprogramforhighschoolagedboys.Thisyear,Davidworkedwithschoolrefusersata‘drumbeat’programdesignedtoengageatriskyouthsthroughmusic,playingtheAfricandjembedrumwiththem.DavidhopestostudyPsychologyin2012toequiphimwithfurtherskillstoaidyoungpeopleinregionalareassuchasGladstone.

Cheryl WickesSincetakingupresidencyatAgnesWaterin2002,Cherylhasdevotedhertimeandeffortstothecommunity.Cherylhasbeeninvolvedinmanycommitteesforvariouscommunitygroupsandisthecurrentpresidentof the Agnes Water Surf Life Saving Supporters Club, a member of the Lions Club board and president of the Captain Cook 1770 Festival. The festival has cemented itself as amajor calendar event, attractingmany visitors to the area. She has been involved with the Disaster ManagementGroup,wasinstrumentalinresurrectingtheAgnesWaterTriathlon,andhasheldseveralDiscoveryCoastTourismandCommerce

Incorporatedexecutivepositions.CherylwasamajorcontributortoimprovementsmadetotheDiscoveryCoastSportandRecreationClub.Aspartoftheclub’scommittee,Cheryloversawitsdevelopmentanditnowhostsnetball,rugbyleagueandAFLcompetitionsforbothjuniorandseniorplayers.ShealsoattendstheAgnesWaterIntra-agencymeetingsforlocalorganisationsandhasofferedhersupportatthesemeetingsfortheAgnesWaterMen’sShed and Community Garden. As the owner/editor of the Coastal Rag, Cheryl endeavours tobringthecommunitytogethertopromotethepeople,theplacesandthelifestyleoftheDiscoveryCoast,advertisingcommunityevents,playgroups,sportingandhealthservicesforfree.Cheryllendshereffortstofundraisingeventsbycoordinatingcommunitysupportandhelpingensuretheviabilityofaclubororganisation’sfuture.Hercontributionstothecommunityarewidely-knownandappreciatedintheAgnesWater/SeventeenSeventyareaandfurtherafield.
