Last week, the College celebrated our annual presentation of awards, the Annual Awards Evening, for the 85th time. The title sounds a bit like the Academy Awards, thankfully without the red carpet parade. It has always represented a highlight in the College’s calendar that recognises a range of student achievements for the year, that is rapidly drawing to an end.This year was no different with a large number of students acknowledged for their contributions to College life in the academic, sporting, cultural and service areas. In total, some 174 boys made their way up onto the stage to receive their awards, many of them doubling up across a number of areas. The greatest difficulty we face, as a staff, is determining where

we draw the line on these awards. The reality is that there are many other students who are also deserving of recognition, but who are pipped at the post by others, who manage to have that little bit extra. Indeed, one of the most difficult jobs I have each year is determining the three aggregate winners in each year level. The aggregate awards recognise the top three students across all subject areas. In most year levels,

I am forced to resort to making a decision between individuals on the basis of very small differences. I now have to use a spreadsheet to calculate these differences, as the margin is that tight. Such is the nature of the competition within the College.Nevertheless, the feature of these nights that always grabs me is that this spirit of competition is a very healthy one, with boys happy to see others recognised, even if it is at their own expense. The sense I get, which I hope we never lose, is that we share in each other’s success and benefit from it jointly as a College community.Long may it continue.

Dear Members of the Saints Community,The Annual Awards Evening last Friday was a wonderful celebration of student achievement. The awards themselves were interspersed with a wide selection of music, drama and multimedia, which made for an engaging, entertaining and informative night.I wanted to take the opportunity to publish some of my own thoughts from the speech I delivered, which for me puts the event in a context. Here is an abridged version of my thoughts:This evening acknowledges and celebrates several things: persistence, hard work, enthusiasm, realisation of potential, struggles, adversity, academic excellence, sporting and cultural abilities, disappointment, hope and, even courage. Most importantly, it is about the growth of our boys. It is about the breadth and depth of growth in various areas of a boy’s life. Our aim is to develop the character of those entrusted to us. As our Founder Saint Marcellin Champagnat pointed out to our early brothers, our task is to “mould the character of those young people in our care”.I wanted to share a story to give an insight into character development:

The Story of the butterflyA man found a cocoon of a butterfly.One day a small opening appeared.He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to squeeze its body through the tiny hole.Then it stopped, as if it couldn’t go further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly.He took a pair of scissors andsnipped off the remaining bits of cocoon.The butterfly emerged easily butit had a swollen body and shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch it,expecting that any minute the wings would enlarge and expand enough to support the body, neither happened!In fact the butterfly spent the rest of its lifecrawling around.It was never able to fly.

What the man in his kindnessand haste did not understand:The restricting cocoon and the strugglerequired by the butterfly to get through the opening was a way of forcing the fluid from the body into the wings so that it would be ready for flight once that was achieved.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives.Going through life with no obstacles would cripple us.We will not be as strong as we could have been and we would never fly.

This is a story for everybody in this room; it is for our students who are struggling to do their best and perhaps can’t see the long term value of what they are undertaking at the time. Perhaps it is good to remember when you are doing that daily homework and revision that is essential to academic success. It may also be a story for those who have painstakingly practiced over a lengthy period of time for a particular sport or learning an instrument or your lines for a play. It is equally relevant for us teachers who need to allow our students to struggle with problem solving and complexity without making it too easy; likewise, for a teacher to remember that confusion can be an important stage in the accommodation of new information or development of a new skill. It is a reminder that challenges are a necessary part of a student’s evolution.

It is a salutary lesson for parents, especially for those who may be inclined to step in to do things for their kids or rescue them from difficulties or disappointments when they would be better off letting them struggle to develop the resilience and strength they need in order to face greater problems in the future.

We believe at Saints that your attitude and way of being is more important than what you do:

• I hope that we have taught you that we all have a responsibility to look after each other;

• That serving others, even if it inconveniences us, will ultimately bring love and joy into the world;

• That the inclusion of all people, despite who they are or whether we like them or not, is a central value and of inestimable importance;

• That faith in ourselves, others and God is an essential part of anyone’s life;

• I hope we have challenged your faith, wherever you are on that journey;

• I hope that you have learned to pray.

I hope that the reception of awards brings a sense of recognition and satisfaction to those who received them. I equally hope that it inspires others to reach for their potential in whatever they undertake.

I know that whether you received an award or not, the struggle and striving that each boy has participated in has served to form his character as a person. That is the greatest reward for all of us.

With best wishes,

Br Darren Burge

a strong fInIsh

As the year draws to a close there is no winding down phase at Saints. Teachers are aware that at Saints we teach and assess through to the final bell. The boys know that the College’s expectation regarding application, behaviour, uniforms and grooming and assessment never waivers. Part of building resilience is to see things through to the finish and this applies to the Saints boys' academic year. I ask that all parents reinforce this message at home.

are you leavIng saInts?Thankfully, apart from our senior cohort, we do not farewell many students each year. However, we are aware that family situations may change that require students to move to another College to complete their education. If this is your reality please contact the College Office as soon as possible to ensure that all exit requirements are fulfilled and to give the Saints community time to farewell your son in a proper fashion.David Harris - Deputy Principal (Pastoral)

Arts DepArtmentawards Night: Congratulations to all award winners, performers and presenters at last Friday’s Awards Night in Lennon Hall. The event was a wonderful showcase of student achievement and for students involved in arts presentations. The “Year in Review” film by Hayden Klaassen, all music performances, especially that of the Year 12 students and the recitation by Luke Chapman displayed the high quality work that students are producing at Saints. The singing of the Sub Tuum by the Senior class was also a highlight of the night. Well done everyone.

AIeF AdFA ACT Work experience Canberra

Two of our AIEF Scholarship students were extremely privileged to attend a 2 day work experience with the Australian Defence Force held in our Nation’s capital, Canberra, last week. The two students; Tayshaun Mosby (Year 10), Ishmaiel Lui (Year 12) and myself, stayed at and toured the Royal Military College Duntroon, RMCD. This is where the Army trains officers for our Defence Forces. Around 21 Indigenous students from around Australia attended. The highlights were flying around Canberra in an Army Black Hawk Helicopter and participating in the Officers' Obstacle Course. Tayshaun and Ishmaiel did themselves proud in their attempt. Ishmaiel being one of a very few who completed it. We visited Kapooka Army Training Base, (3 hour’s drive from Canberra) and saw the Army training and fired converted Austeyr laser guided weapons at a weapons training centre. It was a fantastic 2 days. We were addressed by the Chief of Army, Lt General David Morrison and met many Indigenous soldiers. Thanks to AIEF for their invitation to attend and the ADF. Senior Pathways & CareersThe time has come to say farewell to our current Year 12 cohort and to wish you all the best for your futures. The next few months will be a daunting time with a lot of waiting. Waiting for the OP results to come out, waiting for job offers or university placements to be announced. This can be a very stressful time for families but rest assured in knowing there are always options available. Several universities are bridging courses and information sessions just after the OP results are released to help guide students who need to make changes to their preferences based on lower than expected results. These are advertised on university websites and also in newspapers and radio. For the students looking for apprenticeships, traineeships, cadetships and work it is crucial to get your resumes out to employers. Good luck to all graduates.Year 11’s now start the process of finalising what they want to do in the future and begin the QTAC process. QTAC is the organisation that lists all Queensland university courses, bridging courses, application processes and special circumstances requests. It is really important for the current Year 11’s to start researching this site now so they can make informed decisions. It is also a crucial time for self-reflection, “Did I receive my marks because of the hard work I put in?” or “Did I get these results because I left things to the last minute and really didn’t apply myself”? Year 10s are preparing for final assignments and exams and need to reflect on the subject choices for Year 11 and 12. It is important to review the QTAC pre-requisite information and ensure prerequisite subjects have not been missed.Mrs Narelle HuntSenior Studies Coordinator

By the time this Saints News is received, Week 7 will be under way and we will be preparing to bid farewell and wish our Year 12 Boarders the best of everything for the future. For some it has been five years at boarding school, for others, less but just as much fun! As the final weeks begin the anticipation of the end is apparent for our Seniors both in terms of the excitement about the months and years ahead and what they may hold but also some nervous anticipation too about what happens next. Whatever paths our Senior boarders take, they will always remain a part of the Saints community and will be welcomed back any time they choose to visit. We celebrated the final Mass with Year 12 on Sunday 9th November, a wonderful occasion for all who attended. The applications and elections for boarding Captains for 2015 took place in the past few weeks. In Girls boarding; I am pleased to announce that makaela hockings and danae Letizia were selected by the Chavoin boarders and staff as Boarding Captain and Vice-captain respectively. andrew inderbitzin and Jason Nguyen were also selected as Boarding Captains from the Senior boys and they form part of the student leaders group for St Augustine’s College for 2015. Congratulations to each of these boarders for their selection in these important roles and we look forward to their work along with that of their Year 12 peers in leading the boarding community in 2015. The final Boarders Mass for 2014 takes place on Sunday 23rd November. It has been pleasing to observe that attendance at our boarders masses has been very good throughout the year. The celebration of Mass in this Catholic boarding community is central to our existence and an emphasis on mass attendance for all boarders will continue in 2015.A special thought for those families of our Seniors who will complete their direct association with Saints boarding this year with the completion of Year 12 for their youngest or only boarding child. The thoughts and prayers of this community go with you as well as your son or daughter as you all take the next step into the future.With best wishes to all of our Boarding familiesBernard Burgess Head of Boarding

SAInTS Q7S SeAl THe deAlLast Wednesday saw the Annual North Qld Q7s Tournament held in Cairns featuring several teams from around the district in both the U15s and U18s divisions. Sevens Rugby has developed in profile over the last few years and its elevation to a Commonwealth Games sport and the success of IRB Sevens tour has ensured increased attention towards the abridged form of The Game They Play In Heaven. While the Saints U15s and 1st XV had won their respective competitions, 7s Rugby is a different beast with an entirely different set of challenges. Despite a long, hot day and evening, the U18 boys came up trumps winning their division undefeated, wasting Woree 34-10, bashing the Barbarians side 38-5, smashing St Andrew’s 31-7 and pummelling Peace Lutheran 34-12. All up, the boys scored 23 tries on the day with the electric Nathan Traill chalking up 11 of them. To win so convincingly, the entire team obviously played up to their best, but special mention must go to Jordan Huggett, Francis Muhamad, Matthew Wright, Lachlan McKinstry, Harrison Teo and that man Traill who really shone as some of the better players at the ground. The U15s also went throughout the afternoon without losing a game, smashing St Mary’s, St Andrews and Redlynch before coming up against Trinity Bay in the Grand Final. In a tight contest Saints Rugby proved too tough coming away with a 34-24 win. While the whole team played great footy in a tough and tight competition, a special mention must go to Tayshaun Mosby, Nathan Geno, Will Treston and Nelson Foster as they were standouts on the day.Toby McCarthy, 1st XV Coach & Tim England, U15s Captain.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the St Augustine’s Sports award recipients from our recent presentation night. Congratulations must go to Brayden Cramp (Rising Star), Finn Devine-Cameron (Junior Sportsman of the Year), Jordan Huggett (Senior Sportsman of the Year) and Lachlan McKinstry (The Director of Sports Prize) for taking out the major awards. All boys are more than worthy winners to say the least. Although these four boys stole the spotlight for sport on the night, we should not take anything away from our other sports award winners. The numerous National, State and Peninsula Reps that were presented awards highlight the depth of talent at the College. Finally, credit must go to all the boys who have contributed to sport at Saints in 2014. Your continued efforts will ensure that Saints remains the premier sporting school in the Far North for many years to come. Your endeavours are appreciated by staff, students and the community of St Augustine’s College. Thank you for your support this year and have a safe and happy holiday. Matt WalshDirector of Sport

St Augustine’s has capped off a dominant season of JSS by collecting 6 major trophies from the final day of the competition. St Augustine’s took home 4 Grand Final trophies, the Overall Boys Champion trophy and the Overall Combined with St Monica’s trophy for season 2014 which mirrored the success of 2013. All four teams went through the regular season and the finals series undefeated which was a fantastic effort by the boys.

A brief summary of the four Grand Final victories is as follows;

Firstly, Saints took on St Andrew’s in the AFL at Watsons Oval. The competition was tight early, but the class and experience of the Saints team shone through and the team came away with a comprehensive 54 to 22 victory. With the Gold Coast Suns Cup already under their belts, taking out the JSS title was a great way to cap off the year. Special mention must go to the coach, Mr Luke Parsons and Oliver Koch who received the MVP for the final. In our next game, Saints took on St Andrew’s in the Basketball final. The boys were looking to cap off a stellar season in which they had gone through undefeated and displayed their seasonal form in the final to take out the title 90 to 22. Well done to the coach Mr Brett Toombs for an outstanding season and Riley Clarke who was named MVP for the final. In our 3rd final Saints met St Andrew’s in Football. After a couple of strong wins against St Andrew’s throughout the season, Saints were looking to dominate from the outset. However, St Andrew’s had other ideas and at the main break Saints only led a rejuvenated St Andrew’s 2-0. The second half continued to be a tight tussle with only 1 goal being scored. In the end Saints came away with a hard fought 3-0 victory. Credit must go to the coach Mr Simon Martino for a fantastic season. Congratulations to Sam Hazledon from St Andrew’s who was named MVP for the final. In our fourth and final game, St Augustine’s played

St Mary’s in Touch Football. The two teams had met twice during the season with a draw and a 4 try win to Saints, so this game was sure to follow the seasonal form and be a tight tussle. In a hard fought game, the teams traded tries throughout the entire game before Saints broke it open with some late tries to take the win. The final score was Saints 10, St Mary’s 7. Well done to the coach Mr Shane McMenamin and MVP for the final Nicholas Marino.

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank our coaches and all of the boys involved. They displayed character, sportsmanship and a passion throughout the season which would make everyone associated with St Augustine’s proud. Our humble in victory, gracious in defeat attitude will hold these teams in good stead for the future and I look forward to what the future holds for these outstanding young men.
