British Brass Bands

The Houston Brass Band is a British-style brass band, consisting of one Eb soprano cornet, a section of Bb cornets, one Bb flügelhorn, sections of Eb tenor horns, Bb baritones, Bb euphoniums, tenor and bass trombones, Eb and Bb tubas, and percussion. A traditional, full-sized brass band has thirty to thirty-five members, and the blend of timbres made possible by this combination of instruments involves none of the compromises inherent when woodwinds are included as in a standard wind band. British brass bands came into being as a result of twin technological developments in the first third of the nineteenth century: Bohemian brewery workers affixing stopcocks from the brewing process to their bugles in order to quickly change keys, and the industrial revolution in Great Britain. The evolution of the rotary valve from primitive brewery stopcock to present technology was largely completed by 1820, thus enabling brass instruments to play chromatically in all registers. Soon thereafter the brasses’ role changed from primarily playing bugle calls to splendid melodic and even virtuosic parts, as in Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique (1830). By 1845 the Belgian/Parisian instrument maker Adolphe Sax perfected the piston valves we use today—this accomplishment from the same man who gave the world the saxophone. As James Watt’s steam engine was being adapted for use by nascent British industry, those coal mines, railroads, foundries and other large commercial ventures demanded the immediate construction of entire towns for tens of thousands, where previously the largest enterprises involved perhaps a few hundred workers. These burgeoning new cities required all of the elements of social structure as well as physical infrastructure. The newly-developed brass instruments were inexpensive and readily available, so many large industrial concerns and civic associations formed brass bands to provide cheap entertainment and boost morale, as well as to keep the workers away from the pub—or at least to delay their visits. To this day many British companies have bands associated with them; Grimethorpe Colliery, Black Dyke Mills, and Yorkshire Building Society (formerly associated with Hammond Sauce Works) are some of the most famous. British brass bands give concerts and engage in well-organized competitions where they are ranked much as sports teams are. In fact, the passion for bands in the U.K. is such that it can rival that of soccer teams. On the web, searching within YouTube for “Whit Friday brass band” will give a glimpse of what one type of contest looks and sounds like. The British-style brass band is gaining in popularity today in this country, and there are some excellent brass bands around the U.S. Although there is less emphasis here on competition, contests are held regularly by organizations such as the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA).

Music Director Robert Walp Robert Walp joined the Houston Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Principal Trumpet in 1983. Originally from Pasadena, California, Mr. Walp studied with Walter Laursen and Thomas Stevens in Los Angeles before moving to Chicago to work with Vincent Cichowicz at Northwestern University. As a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Mr. Walp also studied with Adolph Herseth and Arnold Jacobs of the Chicago Symphony. Following graduation from Northwestern in 1982, Mr. Walp studied in Europe with Timofei Dokshuster of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, and Albert Calvayrac in France. Well-known for his success in teaching young people, Robert Walp substituted for Vincent Cichowicz at Northwestern, leading masterclasses, teaching, and giving a recital at his alma mater. Mr. Walp served on the faculty of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music for five years. He has recently judged the Governour’s Prize for Brass Instruments at the Royal Academy of Music & Drama in Glasgow, Scotland. Mr. Walp’s students are some of the most sought-after by major conservatories and schools of music. Active as a chamber musician as well as recitalist, Robert Walp has performed with the Carmel Bach Festival, Rheingau Musikfestival, Albi Festival, and Gidon Kremer’s Laurié Festival in Köln and St. Petersburg, Russia. Solo appearances include numerous recitals throughout the U.S. and Europe and concerti with the symphonies of Houston, Brazosport, Duisburg (Germany), and Radio France. Mr. Walp is a Yamaha Performing Artist.

St. Thomas’ Episcopal Pipe Band

St. Thomas’ Episcopal School founder the Reverend Robert T. Ingram’s vision for his students included teaching them to play bagpipes and drums - and wear kilts! It would not be an easy undertaking, especially in Texas, but disappointing the Reverend Ingram was not an option. The Reverend convinced Pipe Major Donald Shaw Ramsay, then living in California, to come to the school for a number of years to conduct two-week workshops, church organist John Moseley learned pipes so he could teach the students in Ramsay’s absence, and school headmaster Henry L. Walters, Jr., began teaching drums. From these humble beginnings, The St. Thomas’ Episcopal School Pipe Band evolved into one of the world’s most respected pipe bands, winning Juvenile Pipe Band World Championships in 1985, 1995, 2004, and 2006. The Band has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Argentina, Ireland, and of course Scotland, making it one of the world’s most traveled juvenile bands. The Band has performed for many regional and national organizations, including American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, Harris County Sheriff’s Office, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, M. D. Anderson’s Children’s Art Project, and numerous Scottish society functions. The Band also performed for Queen Elizabeth II and former President George H. W. Bush.

The Houston Sängerbund

The Houston Sängerbund, a German singing society, is pleased to underwrite the Houston Brass Band.

The Houston Brass Band thanks the Sängerbund for its generous support. Organized in 1883, the Houston Sängerbund has a rich history of celebrating German culture in Texas. Focused on the music of Germany, the Sängerbund consists of a Männerchor and a Damenchor which join to sing as a Gemischtenchor. Throughout the past 125 years, the Sängerbund has maintained not only its choirs, but also orchestras, theater groups, a dance hall, library, and an English-German school. All who enjoy singing and celebrating German culture are welcome to the Sängerbund.

The Houston Brass Band presents a Brass-instrument Only Band Camp, its annual weekend camp for student brass musicians. This year’s camp will take place from June 13-15 at the Centrum in Spring. Houston Symphony trumpeter and Houston Brass Band director Robert Walp will lead a group of talented young brass players in a three-day program of rehearsals, sectionals, and a closing concert. Unique among music camps, the students will sit alongside adult musicians who are experts on their instruments, the members of the Houston Brass Band.
