Principal’s Comment

Dear Parents

STRONG MIND, CARING HEART AND THE VALUE OF KINDNESS

The notion of a ‘Strong Mind’ and ‘Caring Heart’ is often mentioned and reinforced with our students. ‘Strong Mind’ refers to the student making wise decisions based on what they know is right and wrong. This also means not succumbing to peer pressure. This is where the notion ‘strong’ is reinforced because at times you have to show strength in your decision and stick to it. This can be difficult, especially if your friends don’t agree. An example might be when a group of students knowingly decide to break a school rule, such as playing and running with sticks. It will take a ‘Strong Mind’ for a student to confront their friends and remind them that they are breaking a school rule and that what they are doing is unsafe. This is also where the notion of ‘Caring Heart’ comes into play. We emphasise that we are all part of the Eastwood Primary learning community, and as a community we all have the responsibility to ensure that every one of us at school is feeling happy and safe. In the above example, it requires a ‘Strong Mind’ to confront friends about breaking a school rule and it requires a ‘Caring Heart’ to also be worried that they might injure themselves or others with the sticks. ‘Strong Mind’ and ‘Caring Heart’ are very powerful and important values for all of us to have. Imagine if everyone used a ‘Strong Mind’ and ‘Caring Heart’ at all times; what a happy and safe world we would have! Yesterday I spoke to some of our students about a value that I hold dear to my heart, the value of kindness. I believe this value encompasses all others. When we are kind, we are also respectful, honest, and caring. Kindness can be viewed as quite invaluable. It is necessary to us, so much so that Goethe (German writer and statesman) described kindness as ..."the golden chain by which society is bound together". Kindness within a society is essential and absolutely necessary in order for humans to coexist and live even relatively harmoniously in such large groups. More so, it is safe to presume that the more kindness existing in any society, the more harmony there is likely to be. As parents, teachers, coaches and friends, adults have a huge responsibility in helping shape the minds and values of the children with whom we have regular contact. I know that I learned a lot from the adults in my life. And I continue to learn as I deal with young students and family members. The best way that we can teach children to be more kind and giving is to show that to them on a consistent basis through our actions. Just as we teach them through our actions and words to be kind and giving, let’s remind them through how we live our lives, that giving has its own rewards. Let’s practise what we teach. Children are more likely to internalize what we do, than what we say to do. Please join me in developing the value of ‘kindness’ at our school.

TWILIGHT MARKET

The Eastwood Twilight Market, held last Friday, was immensely successful, not just as a fundraising effort but also for the fantastic community atmosphere that it engendered. It was very easy to find something to buy amongst the many varied stalls of crafts and food. I managed to buy many of my Christmas presents on the night and the Potato Spiral was definitely worth the wait! I have very quickly learnt that one of the best things about belonging to Eastwood Primary is the effort that our school community puts into almost everything we do. The Twilight Market was a good example of great planning, hard work and a wonderful team effort. A huge thank you to Michelle Armitage, Karen Gabel and Sarah Roe who spent so many hours organising the night. You are absolutely amazing! Thank you to everyone who worked so hard on the sausage sizzle, plant stall, home produce stall and the raffle. Thank you to all the parents and staff who stayed behind at the end of the night and helped us pack, clean and clear the hall. Your efforts were very much appreciated on Monday. Thank you to everyone who came out on Friday night and made our Twilight market such a great success. Have a great weekend!

Twilight Market – Friday the 14th of November

Thank you to everyone who came out on Friday night and made our Twilight market such a great success. Thank you also to all the helpers who worked on the sausage sizzle, home produce stall, plant stall and the raffle. Thank you also to Kate Bothwell, Stacey Rowe, Simmone Regan, Kim Colonnelli and all those lovely ladies who helped with the re-packaging of the home produce goods. This week we have our mini games week, with indoor and outdoor activities for everyone

to enjoy. Next week we will be having our spring week

theme with arts and crafts, outdoor activities and spring fruits and afternoon snacks.

Twilight Market

Last Friday we got involved with the school Twilight Market by setting up a guess the lollies

in the jar stall. The kids and staff did a great job at making this

little stall possible by spending their time to make bright colorful signs and putting

together the lolly jar. We are happy to announce the winner Reece

Boucher the winner of the lolly jar with the correct guess of 729 lollies.

OSHCare 4 kids would like to donate the $32.50 made on the stall to Eastwood Primary School.
