DECEMBER CHARACTER TRAIT: KINDNESS & CARING

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE I would like to welcome Manna Wong, our new School Trustee and we are looking forward to working with her. Thank you

to our former trustee, Sam Sotiropoulos. We send him best wishes.

Curling was invented in Scotland. It is one of the Olympic Winter Games sports and involves two players sliding a stone

towards a target. The players sweep in front of the stone to create a path for it as it slides towards the target. Curling came

to HHJPS and JAGLA for the second year in a row. Our students had a great day of curling and the gym floor got a good

sweeping.

Grade 5 students from HHJPS and JAGLA attended an Anti-Bullying day at Stephen Leacock C.I. The students met many

other Grade 5 students from neighbouring schools and created a cloth-tile on anti-bullying. These cloth tiles will be

stitched together to create a quilt. One thing they learned is to treat others the way you want to be treated. That is a great

message.

YOLO Basketball will be coming to an end on December 17th. The girls and boys are very lucky to have this program for

two consecutive years. We thank Coach Samuel, Coach Prince and Coach Dana for their dedication to HHJPS and JAGLA

students.

We strive to have our students attend school every day, on time. Children are welcome to the Breakfast Program at 8:00

a.m. and in the school yard at 8:30 a.m. and 12:25 p.m. for entry. It is very important for children to be punctual in order

to make the most of their learning time.

At this time I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Winter Break. See you in the New Year!

Hello - it's Rakhi Henderson from the School Council!

It's a busy and exciting time of year and and the children have been practicing for the Winter Concert on December

18th. We are having a bake sale during the event and are seeking nut-free donations of food and beverages. This is a

great opportunity for bakers to showcase their skills! We also welcome store bought items like nut-free cupcakes

and cookies, pizza, patties, springrolls and samosas.

All bake sale donations can be dropped off at the office by 5:00 pm on December 18. Proceeds from the bake sale will go

to purchasing new equipment and supplies for the students at HHJPS/JAGLA.

We are also actively seeking new members of the School Council. You are welcome to attend our upcoming meetings

and find out what is happening at the school. Childcare is provided.

On behalf of the School Council at HHJPS/JAGLA, have a safe, warm and happy holiday season!

A new Automated Call-Out System is at the TDSB and will be coming to Highland Heights and Jean

Augustine GLA effective December 1st , 2014. This system will mean that you will be contacted more quickly than is

currently possible with a manual system. It is always very important to call the school (at any time) to advise us if your

child will be late or absent from school. Please look out for a letter that will be sent home to you next Wednesday for

full details of this great new system.

As winter approaches, we know that severe weather will be part of our daily lives for the next several

months. While traffic safety is an important matter all year long, this is a particularly good time to review what we can

do to keep students safe.

The need to be aware and alert at all times, on any road, and even in the most routine circumstances is key to traffic

safety. This applies to students and drivers alike. Road conditions can be challenging in the winter months. So to those

of us who drive, please take extra care on the roads and in parking lots, especially in areas where children might be

present.

School staffs periodically review street and traffic safety with students. Parents can help reinforce these safety

messages with children at home. Below are some tips that might be helpful to review.

Stop, look, and listen for traffic.

Only cross at corners and crosswalks.

Make eye contact with drivers.

Walk on the right side of the crosswalk.

Wear appropriate footwear to reduce the chances of slipping.

Never run into the street.

Obey crossing signals.

Cross only if clear.

Walk on sidewalks.

Where there are no sidewalks, walk as far away from traffic as possible, facing traffic.

The safety of our students is always a top priority. Let’s work together to make the winter season safe so we can enjoy

all it has to offer.
