He has taught us that what is done for the least is done for him, not that what is done for the so- called important people – In God’s eyes, the poor, the lame, the invisible, the lonely, the mourning, the suffering – these people are the important ones, and he admonishes us not to Lord it over others. Even his disciples he reminds today: do not be proud of your power; rather be proud for the reason you have that power – your names are written in heaven. Our pride is in Christ; all power that does us any good comes from him. As we continue in our life together we remember that we live a life of rich beauty that defies narcissism. Christian life raises the communal above the personal. We live in rich hope not of our earthly power, but of God’s unconditional love. We receive his grace to perfect us and make us holy. The greatest thing we celebrate is the ritual of communion – of becoming one with him and brothers and sisters of one another. There are no strangers in Christ. We boast of nothing except of Christ’s cross which is the sign of his love and we are called to embrace even our earthly enemies as our dear loved ones. Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael

Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others.

What does the phrase “we observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky” mean? What sin is traditionally believed to have led to his fall?

Satan is traditionally believed to have fallen because of pride. Is the greatest error on earth boasting in something other than Christ? As we look at the world today we see a place that fought over many “-isms”: Fascism, Communism, and so on. Fighting over these things has done damage to the world that is astonishing in its atrocity. And yet, we seem to have settled today on an “-ism” that is also very challenging. Narcissism is the raising of self above the others in our life and it permeates our culture and world. Entitlement and the idea that my preference should be imposed over all others is a deadly and real challenge to unity. It is remarkably destructive. It has been said that the world is stamped with the word ”I” as it is destroyed. What then does this mean as the disciples saw Satan fall from the sky?

Christ has centered our belief on love of God and neighbor. He has opposed arrogance and entitlement, he has empowered those who could have no power. He has restored the sick. He has taught us that what is done for the least is done for him, not that what is done for the so-called important people – In God’s eyes, the poor, the lame, the invisible, the lonely, the mourning, the suffering – these people are the important ones, and he admonishes us not to Lord it over others.

Your servant in Our Blessed Lord,

Fr. Michael

Page 3: Striving to know, love, and serve God in all others. · July 7, 2019 St. Mary’s Church 95 North Main Street Canandaigua, NY 14424 St. Bridget’s Church 15 Church Street Bloomfield,

Why St. Mary’s? “I think that one of the greatest things about St. Mary’s is how much girls are encouraged to be in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics). All of the TV shows that we have grown up watching portray girls in STEM as the nerds with no friends, or the girls who have to prove themselves to people who always act shocked whenever the girls do something well. But in St. Mary’s, being good at STEM subjects as a girl doesn’t mean you don’t have friends, and it doesn’t mean that nobody believes in you. On the contrary, everyone wants you to do your best and is always proud of you. And nobody was happier than our E3 Robotics Club mentor for my all-girl team when we placed 4th out of 50, the highest out of all the St. Mary’s teams, at the RIT competition.” ~ SMS student

“One of the many reasons we have for sending our children there are the academic skills that St. Mary’s gives students. For instance, what’s emphasized is not rote memorization, but from the youngest ages, chil-dren are encouraged to ask questions and think critically. By the end of middle school, the students are adept at explaining their reasoning, whether that’s in homework for math class, a science fair project, a book review for English, or a multimedia project in Social Studies. St. Mary’s strikes the right balance between teaching students how to retain infor-mation and teaching them to reason. We both teach at a local liberal arts college and these are the skills we expect in our students. St. Mary’s is a Catholic School, but you do not need to be Catholic to be part of the St. Mary’s School family. Our family isn’t and we have felt right at home since our first child started kindergarten. Each student is seen for the child of God they are, regardless of their background. Each student is taught to live their faith, and each student will learn the values of service, stewardship, and love of neighbor. Everyone is welcome and everyone is family.” ~ SMS parents

Service Camp 2019 - August 4-9, 2019 St. Benedict Parish’s Service Camp is an annual stay-away camp where teens serve the community by day, and gather in the evenings for reflection, prayer, and fellowship at Notre Dame Retreat House. The goal of Service Camp is to enable teens to encounter Jesus in others and in doing so, cultivate a spirit of generosity and gratitude. Teens gather at 6:00pm the evening of Sunday, August 4. The next morning, they begin service projects in the Greater Rochester Areas ranging from painting and gardening to activities with children and home-less adults. Each evening, teens share their experiences of the day and how they encountered Jesus. They discover the value of all of God’s children and discover themselves serving as the hands and feet of Jesus. Service Camp ends on Friday, August 9 at noon with Mass and a cookout! Registration forms can be found at https://stbenedictonline.org/servicecamp. Please contact Kristen at [email protected] / (585) 394-1220, ext 41 or Sarah at [email protected] / (585) 394-1220, ext 37 with any questions.

Please Consider Sponsorship for a St. Mary’s Family We are in the midst of an enrollment initiative and are hoping to add several new families to St. Mary’s School, but it is essential that we also retain our current families. There are several existing St. Mary’s families that would benefit from sponsorship to relieve financial burdens and to keep their children enrolled in our school for the coming year. Therefore, we are reaching out to see if there are any parish-ioners who may be willing to sponsor these families (some with one enrolled student, some with several). The differ-ence needed to offset tuition costs and/or financial aid is as follows: Family 1 — $1000 Family 6 — $500 Family 2 — $500 Family 7 — $1000 Family 3 — $500 Family 8 — $1000 Family 4 — $500 Family 9 — $1000 Family 5 — $500 If sponsorship keeps a student at St. Mary’s School, you will be doing a tremendous service not only for that family, but for our school and parish as well. Please contact Tony DiPrima, Director of Finance, at [email protected] or (585) 394-1220, ext 24 if you are willing to become a spon-sor or if you have any questions.

“I was sick and you visited me.” ~Matthew 25:36 We are in need of more Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to bring the Eucharist to Thompson Hospital and several local nursing facilities on the weekends. This outreach of care and support to our seniors and the sick nourishes the person with the Body of Christ and provides a connection to our Catholic community. If you are interested in volunteering or want more information, please contact Jeanette at [email protected] or (585) 394-1220, ext. 11.

You Made a Difference! Justice for Farmworkers! This winter, on Public Policy Weekend, our parish collect-ed signatures in support of the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act. Over 10,300 signatures were collected around the diocese. We’re happy to report that the New York State legislature (finally) passed legislation to give farmworkers basic labor rights, including the right to form a union and bargain collectively and to have one day of rest per week! We had been advocating for farmworkers to get paid overtime as well; the final bill establishes overtime for farm-workers after 60 hours of work a week. This is still not equal with other workers, but it is a step forward. Thank you for standing with our sisters and brothers whose work feeds us.

Annual Blood Drive Was a Success The units collected at our June Annual Blood Drive in Dougherty Hall on June 24 will impact up to 75 LIVES, plus we had 4 first time donors! Thank you to those who donated. If you were not able to donate at our drive in June but wish to in the future, visit www.redcrossblood.org/ to find a scheduled blood drive near you.

St. Vincent de Paul July Meeting The St. Benedict’s Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society will meet Wednesday, July 10 from 1pm - 2:15pm in Dougherty Hall. We will review the results of the recent Ministry Fair and discuss plans for the summer and fall. All are welcome to attend!

Thursday, July 11th is the Feast Day of St. Benedict, our Parish’s Patronal Saint. We celebrate St. Benedict with our annual Seven-Elevenish celebration on the Sunday closest to his Feast Day. This year, the celebration will take place from 11:30am—3pm on Sunday, July 14, where we will gather in St. Bridget’s Church Hall for fellowship, host a Ministry Fair, eat, and more! This weekend is the deadline for Chicken BBQ dinners (see below), which are available for pick up at the celebra-tion. $10 gets you ½ chicken, homemade macaroni salad, coleslaw, salt potatoes, roll and butter, and a bottle of water. These are pre-order only, so don’t miss out!
