As we approach the end of the school year, we sll have many opportunies to celebrate. This Thursday we will host our End-of-Year Concert. At this stage the weather for the evening looks like it will be fine, although geng a lile cooler. The staff look forward to sharing the evening with you and your family. Special thanks to all those who have contributed in any way. CYBER SAFETY Last week we invited you to aend a Cyber Safety session presented by Bre Lee, which was followed up the next day with him talking to our Year 4-7 classes. We had a great turn- out by our parents and speaking to many of them on the night, and since, it was extremely well received. Many parents have menoned that they have already purchased the “kit” which places several restricons on what and when selected items can be accessed. The simple take away message for me was: communicaon with your kids set clear rules and boundaries stay up to date with apps and programs consider and use parental controls be the one who makes the final decision. I’d like to thank Brendan Ackland for co- ordinang the evening and all the work he does around the ICTs here at St Josephs. Brendan has uploaded more details of the presentaon on the school website. I urge you to visit this and connue to work together to keep our children safe. Remember, if we are parenng together and saying “No” to what we believe is unsafe, the easier it is for one another. THE RESILIENCE PROJECT John Grbin and I aended “The Resilience Project” which was presented by Marn Heppell. Marn is passionate about children (and adults) being given the opportunity to be raised in a posive manner that evokes confidence and a zest for life. Marn presented some alarming stascs about mental health, both in children and adults. He spoke about building posive emoonal and cognive capacity through music, exercise and laughter. He also spoke about the importance of gratude, empathy and mindfulness and how these can be simply introduced to our children’s lives e.g. using a “Gratude Journal”. Another factor he spoke about was “failures” and the importance of students failing at school and home on a daily basis, and also parents speaking about their own daily failures. The benefits being that everyone learns from failure and those that are prepared to fail experience the most growth. He believes it encourages them to “trust the outcome” and this will result in them seeking help at crical mes. Marn’s work was inspiring and John and I believe it would be beneficial to our school community to invesgate the opportunity of working with him in the future. Many of the school parents who aended this session, which had been adversed by the “Mid North Schools Partnership”, have contacted me regarding their desire to have our school involved with The Resilience Project. BOOK FAIR Thank you to Ann Grbin who organised our recent Book Fair. The Book Fair was a “hit” with our students with standing room only. It was great to see our students celebrang a love for literacy. Over $3,600 worth of books sold with the school receiving a commission of $730. P.E. WEEK This week our students have been able to undertake a range of physical acvies as part of their P.E. Week celebraons. Special thanks to our LEAD reps who have taken on the responsibility of coordinang these under the guidance of Chris Slaery. Thanks Chris! CAMPS Included in this newsleer is a summary of the Year 7 trip to Canberra - a tremendously posive experience for all involved. I’d like to thank all of our staff who spend countless hours organising and preparing these camps to provide our students with these posive experiences. I can’t help relang this to Marn Heppell’s talk on gratude. How grateful are our students and parents or is this an expectaon? How do our parents and students show/demonstrate this gratude? 15TH NOVEMBER WEEK 5 TERM 4 IMPORTANT DATES From the Principal... THE RESILIENCE PROJECTJohn Grbin and I attended “The Resilience Project” which was presented by Martin Heppell. Martin is passionate about children (and adults) being given the opportunity to be raised in a positive manner that evokes confidence and a zest for life. Martin presented some alarming statistics about mental health, both in children and adults. He spoke about building positive emotional and cognitive capacity through music, exercise and laughter. He also spoke about the importance of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness and how these can be simply introduced to our children’s

lives e.g. using a “Gratitude Journal”. Another factor he spoke about was “failures” and the importance of students failing at school and home on a daily basis, and also parents speaking about their own daily failures. He believes it encourages them to “trust the outcome” and this will result in them seeking help at critical times.Martin’s work was inspiring and John and I believe it would be beneficial to our school community to investigate the opportunity of working with him in the future. Many of the school parents who attended this session, which had been advertised by the “Mid North Schools Partnership”, have contacted me regarding their desire to have our school involved with The Resilience Project.

REMEMBRANCE DAYOn Saturday I had the pleasure of accompanying six year 7 students to our local Remembrance Day Service where they laid a wreath and read two of the readings so eloquently and confidently.

SCHOOL BOARDOn Monday night our School Board met for its regular meeting which included:• the final approval and therefore adoption of the School’s Strategic Plan (the staff and the Board have been working on this for the past term) which is attached to the newsletter.• approval of our ICT devices - end result will be 1:1 devices.• approval of the new Bullying & Harassment Policy.• continued stewardship of our school’s Master plan (await-ing final approval from Catholic Education Office).• staff for 2018.

As you can see, many exciting things on the horizon for St Joseph’s School. I’d like to thank the School Board for their support and dedication.

STAFFING 2018As a result of adverts being placed on the Catholic Education Website, short-listing and interviewing, I’d like to announce that Vicky Smith and Sheridan Laws have been appointed as Educational Support Officers for 2018. I’m sure you will join me in welcoming them to our staff.

P.E. WEEK FuN!

A wonderful keepsake of ‘the year that was’ for you and your family.

Last year’s publication saw a change in format, with more photos of all the year’s events and activities. We also trialled having it professionally printed and finished. The feedback we received was extremely positive and we have decided to keep this format. This year’s publication will see more pages and improvements. The 2017 Yearbook will see a slight increase in price to cover the extra costs involved with this new format and increased size of the publication. I’m sure you will agree it is worth it. Please find an Order form on the back page of this newsletter.

‘We will endeavour to show and share true forgiveness with each other. Year 6 Aquatics Camp

In week 2 of this Term, students from the Year 6 class travelled to Port Vincent to participate in their Aquatics Camp. We were blessed with fantastic weather on the first two days, and gale force winds on the Friday, however this didn’t deter us and the children had an amazing time learning to sail, kneeboard, windsurf and kayak. Many thanks to all of the terrific instructors at Port Vincent who make this such an enjoyable camp; our wonderful parent helpers, Matt Paulett and Mel Treloar, and of course to our bus driver extraordinaire, John Grbin. A great time was had by all! Brendan and Briony Ackland

CAMP NEWSYear 7 Students from St Joseph’s school recently returned from their educational tour of the national capital, Canberra. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with the focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist the school in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards camp costs.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to those Year 7 parents and families who assisted in fundraising. Christmas concert BBQ, wood chopping, second-hand clothes market and the St Joseph’s Community Dinner, were just some of the fundraising initiatives, which allowed the trip to be fully funded.

Students were immersed in Australia’s history and culture with programs including the War Memorial, Parliament House, National Galleries, Australian Electoral Office, Government House (and meeting the Governor General!) and Questacon to name a few. It was delightful to see all students so engaged and excited for new learning opportunities.

Throughout our time in Canberra the students were complimented several times on their impeccable behaviour and manners, a wonderful reflection and representation of our St Joseph’s School community.

What a great opportunity we provide!

CLASS NEWS

Year Four NewsIn Year Four one of our goals is to accept that mistakes are part of our learning. In fact our mistakes are often the best way we can learn. This term we have had some tough learning challenges. One such challenge was learning to draw portraits of people. We had to learn and practise how to use proportion, symmetry and shading. We had many, many tries before we began to see some resemblance to the person we were drawing.

Here are a few of them. See if you can recognise Taylor Swift, Scarlett, Brady, Scarlett (again), Rylee and Celeste. We hope you can see our improvement.

Dipping sauce:2 tbsp soy sauce2 tbsp rice vinegar1 tsp chilli oil

Begin by boiling a few cabbage leaves in water until they are soft, then drain them well and slice up into small pieces. Finely slice the garlic, the spring onions and the ginger. Add your sliced vegetables and the minced pork meat to a bowl, then mix well with the sesame oil and the soy sauce. Try to use an equal amount of pork as your combined vegetables. Put to one side for a short while to marinate and allow the flavours to infuse. With a gyoza skin in the palm of one hand, spoon a small amount of the mix into the centre of the skin. No need to overfill here, simply add an amount approximate to a teaspoon’s worth. Dip your finger in some water and moisten the edge of the skin to make it easy to seal.Fold the filled gyoza skin in half and pinch at the top to seal it. Now start folding over the skin on the side facing you and pleating it together to achieve an effect like a folding fan when it is open. The goal is to achieve a sealed wrap which has the pleated texture on one side, but is flat on the reverse side. When you have made as many as you need, heat up a little cooking oil in a pan and gently place the gyoza in it with the flat side facing down. Cook on a high heat until the bottom of the gyoza become crispy and golden. To finish cooking the gyoza, add a small cup of water to the pan so that the gyoza are half submerged. Place a lid on top of the pan and leave the heat on medium-high. Allow the gyoza to steam until the water has evaporated, then leave them cooking on the bottom a little longer to make sure that they become crispy and delicious.Serve the gyoza on a plate with the crispy side facing up and use a combination of soy sauce, rice vinegar and Chilli Oil to make a dipping sauce. Alternatively, you can skip this and use a ready-made gyoza sauce.
