Two new plays at HB ThomDAYNE ELIZABETH NEL

Fans of theatre director Marthinus Bassoncan catch two productions at the HB ThomTheatre this month.More than 40 students will be taking the

stageas the theatrehostsWomenBehindBarsand Bloedbruilof.“Both Bloedbruilof and Women Behind

Bars are training opportunities for our stu-dents,” said Marthinus Basson, acclaimedtheatre director.“We have far more women than men in the

department and therefore look for pieceswith many female roles.”TomEyen’sWomenBehindBars is anexhil-

arating depiction of eight incarcerated wom-en who are all trying to break free from therestrictions of society and audiences can ex-pect to be whirled back to the 1950s.“It’s about the hope that the 1960s would

be the solution. Evidently, it was not.”Bloedbruilof, written by Federico García

Lorca, has been adapted byBasson to includeauthentic Spanish music and dance, choreo-

graphed by Estelle Olivier.Theplay tells the tragedyof ayoungwoman

on the brink of marriage, who is still in lovewith another man. This man is already mar-ried and a roller-coaster of emotion is un-leashed on stage.“Bloedbruilof is translated and adapted,

but perhaps stripped is the right word. Therehearsal process was exhausting, fun, frightening, challenging and extremely re-warding.”“The show is visually stimulating and very

fun to do,” said François Maree, student-ac-tor in Bloedbruilof.“It comes alive on stage and to be part of

such an energetic and large cast is fantastic.I am learning so much.”Women Behind Bars plays from 22 to 24 and

26 August and again 4 to 5 of September at20:00 at the HB Thom Theatre.Bloedbruilof plays from 28 to 31August and

again 2 to 3Septemberat 20:00 at theHBThomTheatre. Book at [email protected] orphone 079 822 9342. Tickets cost R40, and R30for block bookings.

SA schools still battling with bullyingRETHA KRUGER

Bullying is rife in today’s schoolculture, with devastating conse-quences which negatively affectnot only pupils and staff, but thebroader neighbourhood commu-nity, the general school climateand the overall functioning of theschool.

Research shows that bullying canbe a precursor to aggression and, ifnot addressed, may lead tomore seri-ous acts of violence.Violence-related incidents within

schools have garnered ongoing me-dia coverage in South Africa in re-cent years. In the past year alone, lo-cal media coverage of brazenly vio-lent acts – which have at timesproven fatal –haveagain fuelledpub-lic opinion that school violence inSouth Africa is escalating at analarming rate. It is disturbing andshocking that the effects of bullyingcan be so severe that some individu-als, seeing no other solution, aredriven to suicide or murder. In the last few months, many sto-

ries have made national headlines:DavidHlongwane fromSoshanguve,16, committed suicide after he wasbullied by four classmates; a Grade11pupil inKwaZulu-Natalattemptedsuicide after she was allegedly bul-lied. Another pupil also dropped outand was hospitalised for stress as aresult of racial taunts;AllanManuel,

17, from Kasselsvlei High School inCape Town, was stabbed and killedby a matric pupil. These stories have made national

headlines, and yet for each of them, there are hundreds of stories that gountold.A 2012 studybyUNISA’sYouthRe-

searchUnit onbullyingat secondaryschool level showed that 34% of 3 371pupils surveyed inGauteng,and30%of 901pupils surveyed in theWesternCape have been victims of bullyingbetween 2010 and 2012.The 2012National School Violence

Study, highlighted the extent towhich community factors intersectwith the levels of violence occurringat schools. The detrimental effects of bullying

are a harsh reality andurgent actionis needed. There has never been astrongerneed to reduce school bully-ing and create safe schools than atpresent.Thequestionis:Whatisbeingdone

about bullying in our schools? Whatis being done to address and effec-tivelymanage bullying behaviour inour schools? There seems to be a gulf between

what the Department of Educationhas implemented to effectively ad-dress bullying and what is actuallyoccurring in the school environ-ments.Whilst theDepartmentofBasicEd-

ucation advocates for awhole-schoolapproach to the prevention of bully-ing and violence at school, evidence-based approaches that focus on pre-vention and intervention methodsand suitable policies to address bul-lying in different situations are alsorequired. These need to be school-based,basedon individual resourcesand prevention and interventionplans,whichdrawsontheexperienc-es and contribution of the wholeschool community. Finally, the school environment is

inextricably embedded in the broad-er social and community context, and therefore the whole school com-munity plays an important role inmaking schools safe.Weallhaveasocialandprofession-

al responsibility to share our knowl-edge and expertise to assist schoolcommunities in effectively address-

ing bullying.Tips for addressing andmanag-

ingbullyingbehaviourinschools:) The fundamental component in

reducing school bullying is to createa positive school climate.

) Awhole-school approach is rec-ommended to ensure the effectivefunctioning of the school.

) Sustained attitude change to-wards bullying behaviour is needed.

) Policies aimed at the eradica-tion of bullying should be created, implemented, and made available toeveryone in the school environment.

) Prevention and interventionprogrammes shouldbe implementedand evaluated on a systemic basis. These programmes need to be inten-siveand long-lasting inorder tohavean impact on bullying behaviour.

) Campaigns and workshops areuseful methods which aim to facili-tate awareness and provide impor-tant information about bullying.Providingthewholeschoolstaffwith

more knowledge, education andtraining is critical to addressing andmanaging bullying.
