Duco UK Ltd - United Kingdom

Steel Super StructureThe Duco project was a partnership of several international companies including Duco UK Ltd, Brastec, and

Steele Solutions. Duco UK Ltd, based in England, manufactures customized umbilical systems for the global offshore oil and gas market. Brastec, headquartered in Brazil, is an engineering project management, procurement, assembly, installation and commissioning company for value-added, tailor-made equipment for the oil and gas markets.

Duco UK Ltd needed to expand production to handle larger and longer umbilical systems used to penetrate the ocean surface and provide underwater exploration on the ocean floor for energy giants like ExxonMobil, BP, etc.

Objectives:• Meet customer engineering specifications• Design to UK code and verify by UK

engineering firm• Design swan necks to guide umbilicals• Comply to five UK stair codes• Accommodate numerous equipment

loads, sizes and hole openings

Design a custom engineered, free-standing steel structure capable of supporting the manufacturing process of the umbilical systems. The steel super structure design handles multiple forces in the manufacturing process including starting and stopping as well as safety features if the processwere interrupted.

Project Stats• Tower Height: 167’ tall• Tower Widths:

• Base 85’ x 76’• Middle section 32’ x 32’• Swan necks 125’ x 10’

• Weight of Steel: 780,000 lbs • Channel: 1 mile• Handrail: 8,900 linear feet• Angle: 7,500 linear feet• Beams: 11,800 linear feet (381,000 lbs)• Finish: Powder paint• Timeline: 10 months• Industry Served: Oil & Gas

Unique FeaturesComplex project requirements provide several unique features:

• Special equipment mountings used to attach and support machinery

• Three styles of decking: • Bar grate• Floor plate• Expanded metal safety mesh

• Thirty flights of stairs designed and constructed
