Stage 3 – Week 10 FINAL WEEK OF TERM. PARENTS/CARERS As this is week 10, we would like to convey our heartfelt thanks for your understanding and assistance throughout this term. English Week 10 The last few weeks our focus has been on persuasive texts. This week will be the

final week to work up your final pieces. Even if you are happy with what you have posted before, we would like you to turn it in again so we have it all in one place. You can definitely go back to prior days' work and copy the texts you have already completed, but try to add, edit, and check your work this week.

WALT; Communicate our ideas and point of view on topics using different language forms, and features. We have also learnt to compose, edit and present well-structured texts (the editing part is occurring this week).

WILF; We are looking for your two best persuasive texts. You can use your original essay, the letter or the poster. Try to pick the one you are happiest with, that uses the language forms and features we discussed over the past 4-5 weeks.

TIB: Being able to communicate your point of view is important throughout all aspects of life. It is not about arguing, or being right or wrong, but being able to articulate (explain) your thinking is the goal. In high school, and through university and other studies, essays (persuasive texts) will continue to appear more.

Whole Week Task Description Once you have decided on the two texts you want to send as your best work, spend

some time looking through the editing tasks and revision of the language features and devices below.

Hand your two persuasive texts in by Friday. You need to turn them in.

Editing

Although we are working online where Google Docs or Word check for spelling and grammatical errors, sometimes errors can still be missed, or changed to be incorrect for that sentence. We have all heard of the Grammarly Tool, it is needed because even Word gets it wrong sometimes!

Things to do:

1. Re-read your writing, focusing on each sentence, don’t skip words. 2. Ask someone else to read it. If you are worried about asking, you might want to

change a few things! 3. Is the first line of each paragraph indented? (click Tab once) 4. Have you used words that make sense? 5. Have you stayed on topic?

Structure

The structure of your essay should be as follows;

Opening Statement; Introduction of topic, with an overview of the arguments to follow.

Series of arguments; Using the PEEL structure of paragraphs (Below), have you presented 2-3 arguments to support your view on the topic?

Concluding Statement; summarise the arguments, presenting and reinforcing your view on the topic.

The structure of your letter would not be much different. The only differences will be to write to somebody specific, add a greeting, an address, and sign it at the bottom.

Persuasive Language

This was one of the harder aspects of this unit to grasp. The idea is just to use convincing language. Saying “because I said so” is no longer an option! You have to persuade others with your writing skills. There is a list of Thinking/Feeling verbs, connecting words/phrases and some cause/effect connectives. Again, you do not need to use them everywhere, however if you drop in a few here and there your persuasive text will sound a lot stronger!

Persuasive language continued… Rhetorical question; This can be as simple as a question in your introduction or in a paragraph that makes the reader want to agree. For example;

You wouldn’t want to live inside forever would you? We would all like to eat more ice cream right? Do you really want to live in a world without trees?

Personal Pronouns; You, our, we us. Use these pronouns to make the reader feel like you are talking directly to THEM. Making them involved in the argument, and the problem or solution. For example;

WE have to work together. YOU have the power. The solution starts with US.

Alliteration; although this doesn’t directly affect the readers point of view on a topic, it does make the sentence feel bolder and more important. We touched on alliteration in poetry, but it is the same letter or sound at the beginning of words that are close together. For example;

She won’t Sell Sea Shells at the Shore if global warming removes the Shore!

The devastation of deforestation caused disturbing damage to the domestic wildlife.

Repetition; This can work quite well in an introduction, or conclusion. It is a repeated phrase or word that really focusses the reader’s attention. For example;

We won’t give up, we won’t give in, we won’t stop, until the turtles are safe.

You have the power to make change, you have the power to speak out, and you have the power to be better!

Persuasive Image

If you decide to use your persuasive image, make sure you can tell both the topic, and the side of your argument. There should not be paragraphs of text, maybe a heading and a question or two. Give the poster to someone else, and see if they can tell you what message the image is trying to convey.

Reminder!!

By Friday, you need to have chosen, and double checked two of your completed persuasive articles (essay, letter, poster). Those working from home can just send it in when you pass on your hard packs.

Drama Create your own News Channel.

It’s time to create some news stories for your own news channel!

You have a choice:

Present as a radio news bulletin in a voice note.

Present as a television news bulletin and film it.

Your stories can be inspired by true events, but use your IMAGINATION to create some

wacky stories!

Remember that you do find stories in the news that are unbelievable at times.
