Second Homily Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas, Today’s Gospel shows us Jesus as the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep. He lays down His life for them. Today is known as Good Shepherd Sunday and, therefore, also known as the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. It is an opportunity for us to prayerfully ask the Lord for more vocations. (God knows that we need more priests—especially as we know

that the shortage of priests is hitting the Archdiocese of Chicago as we “Renew My Church.”) While we are all called to imitate Christ, some are called more closely to imitate Jesus as the Good Shepherd. As one author has put it—”Priests and Religious are not ‘hired help,’ but rather, they give their whole lives to the Church.” As our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has so famously said, priests are supposed to “smell like the sheep” - to be with the people, to closely identify with the trials of life. Those who are called to be Shepherds must themselves learn to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd. We at St. Thomas of Villano-va are blessed to have our seminarian, Andy Matijevic, who is at Mundelein Seminary. And at the same time, we are blessed to be able to “adopt” other seminarians like Deacon Jacob Rouse (By the way, next weekend will be his last weekend here as he heads home in May to be ordained for the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa.) and many others over the last eleven years through our “Teaching Parish Program,” and the Pastoral and Transitional Diaconate Internships. It is the hope that the presence and gift of these men at our parish—as part of their seminary training—will also inspire our young parishioners to think about priesthood. When is the last time you have asked your children and grandchildren if they have ever thought of becoming a priest? Maybe, you can put that on your agenda for this week? And say a prayer for all the priests—both living and deceased—who have ministered to you throughout your life. (Just this past Tuesday, it was the nineteenth anniversary of the death of Father James J. Rowley as well as the third anniversary of the passing of Francis Cardinal George.) And don’t forget to keep your STV parish priests in your prayers throughout the week. We need plenty of prayers like you do! I would ask you to pray also the following prayer:

Prayer for Vocations

God our Father, we thank You for calling men and women to serve in Your

Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, religious, and consecrated persons. Send

Your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to Your call.

May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. We had our second Town Hall Meeting for “Renew My Church” this past week. Thank you to the 149 parishioners who attended this important informational meeting. And we thank you for the feedback regarding the possible scenarios. Our parish “Renew My Church” Feedback and Discernment Team will bring all your feedback and any concerns to our next Grouping Meeting this upcoming week. Meanwhile, if you have any questions or comments, you may send them to [email protected] and a team member will respond. We will keep you posted as to the further developments of scenarios and the direction for renewal and structural change as we seek vitality and viability for the four parishes of our area. Your Pastor,

Rev. Thomas R. Rzepiela

St. Patrick / St. Joseph Parish Fundraiser Growing Our Faith

Today the Church throughout the world prays for voca ons. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more voca ons to the priest-hood and religious life?

♦ Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead.

♦ Keep our parish priests in your prayers throughout the week.

♦ Encourage your children, grand-children, or other young people to consider a voca on as a priest or religious brother or sister.

♦ Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God’s call.

"Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" —Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2

“Becoming a priest or a man or woman religious is not primarily our own decision.... Rather it is the response to a call and to a call of love.” —Pope Francis

So I took a stone carving class years ago. My ini al effort wasn’t half bad, and it remains in my mind one of my best ar s c efforts. I carved three sides of the alabaster stone--roughly the shape of a large shoebox with a sloped top--with these words: “With Love…the stone to beauty grows…and quietly sing the stars.” There were twenty people in the class, and I can’t recall anyone else’s work except for one. A classmate named David started with a stone about the same height as mine but with a deep fissure running ver cally through it. Apparently hearing the old Chris an hymn in his head, David carved, “Rock of Ages…” on one side of the fissure; he carved “cle for me” on the other.

I haven’t thought of David’s stone for a long me, but it comes to mind today in conjunc on with today’s readings and in conjunc on with my recent visit to Salt Lake City on a business assignment. I spent most of my me in the Salt Palace conven on center, but when out and about, I saw the centerpiece of the city, the Salt Lake Temple, a mul -spired edifice that takes your breath away for its beauty. Late one a ernoon I saw it silhoue ed by the clouds with rays of sunshine coming down from above. It was all very biblical, promp ng one of my traveling colleagues to sing halleluiah! and to recall Joseph Smith’s vision and/or Brigham Young’s assessment that Salt Lake was the place. I never took any compara ve religion classes in college--I’ve never even seen The Book of Mormon--so, I can’t tell you much about Mormonism. I looked it up online and got about a

gazillion hits (3,380,000 anyway…), and that’s just way too much work. Accordingly, I did what I some mes do when overwhelmed by the World Wide Web: I turned to our Grolier’s Encyclopedia. Here we go. Mormon-ism: “…a way of life prac ced by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of La er-day Saints, o en called Mormons or La er-day Saints…Mormons use the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and two other books of revela ons to Joseph Smith as their standard scriptures, thus they share most of the beliefs of tradi onal Chris anity but with some modifica on…” Hmmm. “…the beliefs of tradi onal Chris anity.” I told an Evangelical friend once that I wasn’t sure who they were religiously, or what they were all about. He responded, “I think you’re an Evangelical.” That was decades ago, and the words s ll make me smile. Like the Mormons, apparently--and for sure, my Evangelical friend--I believe that Jesus is the Christ. Crucified. Died. Risen. Everything else to my way of thinking is periphery. To use Peter’s words from today’s first reading when the religious elite ask him by whose authority he cured a beggar unable to walk, “If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a cripple…then all of you and all the people of Israel should know that it was in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead….He is the stone rejected by you…which has become the cornerstone…” Truly, David, “Rock of Ages…cle for me.” For all of us.

IV NIEDZIELA WIELKANOCNA – NIEDZIELA DOBREGO PASTERZA – Głos

Odkryć powołanie to usłyszeć taki głos.

A jakoż to uczynię, gdy mdleje serce moje i osłabła prawica moja?!… I umocnij mnie, Panie, w siodle moim, bym przeciw poganom czyniąc, zajechał do chwalebnej śmierci i do nieba… Przez Twoją koronę cierniową – wysłuchaj mnie! Przez ranę w boku Twoim – wysłuchaj mnie! Przez przebite gwoźdźmi ręce i nogi – wysłuchaj mnie…!’

Nieraz odtąd ją powtarzałem w każdym nieszczęściu, a zawsze z ulgą wielką. Dlatego odmówiłem ją i teraz…’

23. Kwietnia – uroczystość św. Wojciecha – głównego patrona Polski

Święty Wojciech urodził się w 956 roku w czeskich Libicach. Był szóstym dzieckiem książęcej pary Sławnika i Strzyżysławy. Od dziecka przeznaczony do stanu duchownego w wieku 27. lat został mianowany biskupem Pragi. Do swojej biskupiej stolicy wszedł boso.

Odwiedzał też więzienia, a przede wszystkim targi niewolników. Praga leżała na szlaku ze wschodu na zachód i stąd dostarczano niewolników do krajów is-lamskich. Święty Wojciech miał mieć pewnej nocy sen, w którym usłyszał skargę Chrys-tusa: ‘Oto ja jestem znowu sprzedany, a ty śpisz?’ Scenę tę przedstawia jeden z ka-setonów Drzwi Gnieźnieńskich.

Wojciech nawoływał też usilnie do przemiany życia i porzucenia złych obycza-jów zarówno możnych, jak i duchowieństwo. Niezrozumiany i skonfliktowany z nimi wyjechał wraz ze swoim bratem przyrodnim

Radzymem do Rzymu.

W drodze na północ do pogańskiego ple-mienia Prusów Wojciech gościł w Gnieźnie u księcia Bolesława Chrobrego, a następnie w Gdańsku, gdzie nauczał i chrzcił. Zaczęto bić Wojciecha ubranego jeszcze w szaty litur-giczne i zawleczono go na pobliski pagórek. Tam pogański kapłan zadał mu pierwszy śmiertelny cios. Potem 6 włóczni przebiło jego ciało. Odcięto mu głowę i wbito ją na żerdź. Przy martwym ciele pozostawiono straż. W chwili zgonu Wojciech miał 41. lat.

Radzyma i Boguszę po pewnym czasie wypuszczono, by przekazali Bolesławowi Chrobremu propozycję wykupienia ciała męczennika.
