He took his fortune to a far away place and quickly spent all he had on his personal pleasures. He was completely broke when a serious famine struck the area and he was forced to tend pigs, an occupation prohibited to Jewish people. As he tended the pigs, he hungered for their scraps and realized that his fa- thers slaves lived better than he did. It was then that he decided to return home, not as a son, but as a hired hand. So happy was the mans father when he saw his son return that he celebrated with all sorts of signs of honor. The father s older son, however, was very displeased with the way his father treated his brother, claiming that he had always been there working like a slave for his father. Never once had the father celebrated with this son. The father explained that the older son had always been with him and obedient. It was cause to rejoice, however, that his other son had been lost, but now was found.

GOSPEL SUMMARY Today’s Gospel is the well-known story of the prodigal son who begged for his share of the family inheritance. He took his fortune to a far away place and quickly spent all he had on his personal pleasures. He was completely broke when a serious famine struck the area and he was forced to tend pigs, an occupation prohibited to Jewish people. As he tended the pigs, he hungered for their scraps and realized that his fa-ther’s slaves lived better than he did. It was then that he decided to return home, not as a son, but as a hired hand. So happy was the man’s father when he saw his son return that he celebrated with all sorts of signs of honor. The father’s older son, however, was very displeased with the way his father treated his brother, claiming that he had always been there working like a slave for his father. Never once had the father celebrated with this son. The father explained that the older son had always been with him and obedient. It was cause to rejoice, however, that his other son had been lost, but now was found.

Lenten Program “Footprints of God”

from Formed.org will be offered Saturdays 10 am—noon in the St. Stephen Parish Hall. It includes a film & short discussion. It was filmed in actual locations where the Gospel story took place. Participants are welcome (not required) to “pre-watch” the programs at

Pastor’s Corner

I highly recommend the following movie and book to you. A new movie is being released called: Unplanned. It is about Abby John-son who supported abortion and was a rising star in the Planned Parenthood industry. She had a con-version experience and this tells her story. It is “gritty” due to the abortion scene. However, it is a great state-ment about the horror of abortion and its industry. It is playing in Paducah and Clarksville. Try to see it as soon as you can. I am not sure how long the local theaters will run the movie. You can hear and see Abby John-son’s story of conversion as well as information about the movie and her talks about the truth of Planned Parenthood on YouTube. Simply type in her name in “search.” A new book is now available called The 21: A Journey to the Land of the Coptic Martyrs. This book looks at the lives and faith of the Coptic men who were killed on a beach in Lybia by ISIS members. The author, Martin Mosebach, is a highly ac-claimed German author. He was struck by the faith of these men at the time of their death. He traveled to Egypt to meet their families, priests and bishop. As always, the Martyrs inspire and instruct us in how we are to live our faith. The book is also available in German. If you cannot order the book, please contact the office.

Penance Service: Please mark your calendar for our Lenten Penance Service on April 4, 2019 at 6:30 pm

“My son, you are here with me always. Everything I have is yours.”

Jesus tells the story of the man with two sons, one who leaves his father and squan-ders his possessions. Despite his son’s ingratitude, the father longs for his son’s re-turn. The ungrateful son sinks so low he realizes his mistake and chooses to return to his father to beg forgiveness. The other son is angered by his father’s act of love and compassion for the son who abandoned and hurt him. In a similar story in the Talmud an ungrateful son is too ashamed to take the first step to return to his father. His father sends him a note, “Son, come back as far as you can, and I will come the rest of the way!” God has given us all that we have, all that we are and all that we ever will be. Are we sometimes ungrateful for all that God has given to us? Have we failed to use it as God intended? Have we abandoned God’s plan for us? Probably!!!! But He longs for our return. If we take the first step, He comes the rest of the way to us. Our God is an Awesome God.
