GOSPEL SUMMARY

Using saliva and earth, Jesus made a paste to heal the blind man. The healing became a true conversion for the man, but created some problems for Jesus with the Jewish lead-ers. Because this heal-ing took place on the Sabbath, the Pharisees accused Jesus of breaking Jewish law. The Pharisees tried to get confirmation of this action from the blind man’s parents and from the blind man himself. In the end, the authorities were unable to charge Jesus with any wrongdoing and had to recognize that Jesus was gaining many disciples.

REFLECTION FOR FAMILIES

.In order for parents to help their children follow the light of Christ, they too must open their eyes. As Jesus helped the blind man understand, it is not enough to see only with our eyes. We need also to see with our hearts and allow our every action to reflect this sight. Jesus healed the man of his blindness, but in the end the man recog-nized Jesus as the Messiah and worshiped Him.

Most Reverend John Jeremiah McRaith, Bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro from 1982 to 2009, died Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the age of 82. He was born in Hutchinson, Minnesota on December 6, 1934. He graduated from St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, and was ordained a priest of the Diocese of New Ulm, Minnesota, on February 21, 1960. In 1982, he was ordained as the third Bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro. In addition to shepherding the Catholic Church of Western Kentucky, Bishop McRaith served as board member for Brescia Uni-versity, the Daniel Pitino Center, McAuley Free Clinic in Owensboro, and Lourdes Hospital Founda-tion in Paducah. On Thursday, March 23, a tractor-pulled wagon

processed with the body of Bishop McRaith from Glenn Funeral Home to St. Stephen Cathedral. The funeral took place on Friday with Arch Bishop Joseph Kurtz of the Archdiocese of Louisville presiding with Bishop Wil-liam F. Medley as concelebrant. Burial followed at Mount Saint Joseph in Maple Mount, Kentucky. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Diocese of Owensboro in support of charitable work across the diocese and to Catholic Relief Services.

STEWARDSHIP EXPRESSIONS March 26, 2017—Fourth Sunday of Lent

John 9:1-41 “Jesus said to the Pharisees, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; But now you are saying, ‘We see,’ so your sin

remains.” Socrates observed, “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” Throughout history people have been harmed or killed, and resources have been wasted, by people in power who were too ignorant to know what they did not know and people who know what they promote or impose on others is not true, but do it for reasons of pres-tige or profit or power, Jesus knew that the Pharisees, and the more powerful Sadducees, imposed laws and require-ments on the uneducated people that they either knew, or were not certain, were not what God intended, but served their own purposes. The false teaching that illness or inju-ries were a sign of punishment from God is an example. Jesus healed the man blind from birth to challenge that teaching and the wisdom of those who used it to control and oppress people. Do we have the wisdom to know that there is much about God and our Catholic faith that we do not know? Are we wise enough to accept that we must constantly seek truth? Jesus expects nothing less.
