The Divine Mercy image is a depiction of Jesus as He ap-
peared to Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska in 1934. According
to her diary Jesus told the saint that He promises that the
soul who venerates His Divine Mercy will not perish. Two
rays representing blood and water come from the heart of
Jesus. The red rays stands for the blood of Jesus; the pale
rays stand for the water which makes souls righteous. (Diary
of Saint Faustina, 313). A beautiful replica of this image is
displayed on the rear wall of our church.
GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE
DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
3rd Sunday of Lent
"There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his
orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it [he] found
none." We live in a results-driven society. It can be easy to put
pressure on ourselves to succeed. If we're not keeping up with
the perceived "good life" of those around us, we feel anxious
and disappointed. Some of the Gospel stories about fruitfulness
can seem to play out in this fashion. "For three years now I
have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found
none. So cut it down." The message seems to be clear. Abide in
God and bear fruit! Stand apart from God and be barren. But
what happens when we're trying, but the growth we wanted
doesn't seem to be coming our way? What if it feels like life
just isn't bearing fruit?
This Sunday, Jesus gives us a sign of hope. "[The gardener]
said to him in reply, 'Sir, leave it for this year also ? it may bear
fruit in the future." How quick we can be to judge! Perhaps you
started out Lent with high hopes and big ideas for getting closer
to God. Maybe things haven't gone exactly like you thought. It
can be easy to lose patience with our failures or slow growth.
We shouldn't be too quick to assume that God has given up on
us. He hasn't.
The same ideas apply to those around us. Perhaps we're the
planter of the fig tree. We expect a certain amount of growth
from someone in our life, and they just aren't measuring up. Let
today's Gospel be a gentle nudge for mercy. As Lent continues
to unfold, be patient with yourself and those around you. Wait
for God to provide the growth.
As we walk Lent faithfully, we are preparing to celebrate
Easter with joy and gladness. We also look forward to the
octave, the eighth day after Easter, which is Divine Mercy
Sunday. Here at St. Raymond we will celebrate Divine
Mercy Sunday on April 28, 2019, with prayerful devotion
and blessings. When the Easter baskets are emptied of their
goodies, we can fill our hearts with the goodness of special
blessings that come on that day. Mark your calendar for
Divine Mercy Devotion. 2:30 p.m., April 28, 2019.

Calling All Prayer Warrior's:
Have you ever thought about fighting spiritual warfare? When
fighting spiritual warfare, you are not fighting against flesh
and blood, but powers and principalities. Did you
know that abortion is actually a sacrifice to
Satan? Abortion is one of those most painful
topics that we have a very hard time talking about.
I can say, personally, that you can heal from
the pain of an abortion. God is loving and merciful when
we are sorry for having offended Him. If you feel ready to stand
up for God's precious little ones, please join us on the sidewalk as
we prayerfully and peacefully stand on Wednesday, March 27,
2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Pittsburgh Planned Parent-
hood at 933 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh. We will leave from St
Raymond's at 9:45 a.m. Pro life prayer books will be provided.
Please bring a Holy Rosary and a chair if you like. Contact
Rachel Burke at (724) 691-5921, (760) 792-0255 cell. Or e-mail
at [email protected]. If you are suffering from the pain of
an abortion, visit Rachel's Vineyard retreat and counseling for
assistance and healing.

BIBLE
The Bible is the inerrant Word of God. However, personal understandings and interpretations are not without error. “In Sacred
Scripture, God speaks to man in a human way. To interpret Scripture correctly, the reader must be attentive to what the human
authors truly wanted to affirm and to what God wanted to reveal to us by their words. In order to discover the sacred authors’
intention, the reader must take into account the conditions of their time and culture, the literary genres in use at that time, and the
modes of feeling, speaking, and narrating then current. ‘For the fact is that truth is differently presented and expressed in the various
types of historical writing, in prophetical and poetical texts and in other forms of literary expression.’(Dei Verbum, Vatican Council
II)”(##109 & 110, Catechism of the Catholic Church).
The Bible Study-Discussion meeting originally scheduled for this Thursday, March 28, is cancelled.
Thank you! Turkey Dinner Fundraiser was a huge success with over 300 adult meals sold! this by far shows our commitment to
our parish as it is truly a group effort to plan, prepare and serve all those delicious meals.
Thanks to all those who helped cook and break down the turkeys, make stuffing, make delicious desserts, along with those who
worked in the kitchen making sure everything was ready, served, and cleaned up along with all those who came to enjoy the meal.
Everyone plays an important role and so very important to our success!
NEW EVANGELIZATION Many individuals in today’s world fail to see the relevance of
religion in their lives. Especially when all is going well, even
we ourselves are tempted to ignore prayer to an invisible God
whom we cannot see with our bodily eyes and consider atten-
dance at Mass or obeying other laws of God and the Church as
unnecessary. However, consider the fact that we all must die
some day and come face to face with our Creator. For those
who ignore God and His Commandments in this life, death will
be eternal. We, the faithful, must overcome the temptation to
imagine that reality consists only in what we can see, feel or
taste. Faith is a gift from God which we use to place our
trust in the Almighty whom Jesus has introduced to us as our
Father. In our love for another human being, our desire is to
share what is good, including this gift with them. Our efforts
and prayers to do this is what evangelization is all about.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The Nicene Creed is the statement of the basic truths, or
dogmas, of our Faith. When Jesus ascended into heaven he
did not leave us with this explicit summary of what we believe.
Indeed, the revelation of who God is and our participation in
the divine life was not immediately known even by the
Apostles. Even the determination of which writings of Sacred
Scripture were to be included in or excluded from the Bible
itself took place over time. This growing awareness of our
Faith throughout history continues today and is known as
“Tradition”. Infallible papal proclamations, documents of
Church Councils and the writings of scholarly theologians
provide insights into our human understanding of the Faith
which will never be complete until we meet God face to face
at the end of time. Until then we are obliged to read and study
not only the Bible but these other writings as well.
Commemorative Ornaments are now available!
The Ornaments are only $10 each and depict our rich history by featuring our past and present churches.

Celebrating Creation The early birds of spring are back. Do you hear them?
With climate change, they say the cycle of the birds’ reproduc-
tion and the cycle of the blooming of what some birds count on
to feed their young is becoming off kilter, meaning that the
baby birds affected by this skewing of cycles will die of malnu-
trition. Thank God for the new life we see and hear. Be kind to
the earth, so that our children and their children will see and
hear what we see and hear each spring.
