    From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners: : The past weeks have been rather rough for us. We have watched the news and read in the papers about the Manchester bombing in England, the Coptic

Christians assaulted and killed on a bus in Egypt, a hate crime committed by a deranged white supremacist in Seattle, Washington. Closer to home, we just learned of a devastating fire in a 3 story home in the 1700 block of N. 6th Street which claimed the lives of a mother and her two children, in addition to, the senseless tragedy of three young adults (ages 24, 28, and 33) who just recently died as a result of a drug overdose. As we recall the event of Pentecost when the Apostles received the gift of the Holy Spirit from Christ our Redeemer, we are reminded of a group of believers who were frightened and afraid. Those in the upper room that day, were as paralyzed as many of the people that Jesus cured or set free throughout his life and ministry. Christ gave them the gifts of the Holy Spirit that day to lead them and to guide them. When God’s gift of Courage flows through our veins, we can find the inner strength to speak to our family members and loved ones about the dangers and trappings of drug use. We might have the courage to step forward to protect a child or young person from the hands of those who wish to do them harm. We can tap into the gifts of Wisdom and Understanding as we learn basic facts about other faith traditions and look for common ground where we can collaborate, have greater ecumenism, and mutually respect each other’s beliefs and faith traditions. Pentecost has always been defined as the “Birth of the Church.” Our faith is indeed missionary at its very core. By design, it is meant to have the members “Go Out” or “Go Forth,” for the distinct purpose of evangelization. Then we may truly be God’s messenger and use our hands and talents to build God’s Kingdom in our families and relationships - in our neighborhood and workplace. Only then will we be healed of our own self-imposed paralyzation. We will be restored to our original dignity and glory from complacency. The values of Christ and his Gospel will be made manifest in our own choices and “Right Judgements.” We will reach out to families in need and those who have experienced devastating loss and bring God and prayer into that moment to dispel the darkness of doubt, despair, anger, grief, or simply feeling overwhelmed. We remind the world that we are never alone. We, like the apostles, are called to go out and touch the lives of others in Love and in Faith. We are here to get involved and make a difference. If we do not, violence and hate Cont’d p.2

may rule the day, fire will burn and consume, the stranger will continue to be a threat and unwelcomed, and the joy, peace, and love we so desperately seek, will continue to allude us. In the letter of St. James, he points out that faith and action must row in tandem, like rowing a row boat. In order to make forward progress, you have to use both of them equally and at the same time. May we row together as fellow brothers and sisters who share one faith and one baptism and may we work to build the kingdom together - one brick - one life at a time! Fr. Richard

Padre Richard
