Notes From Sarah

Dear Friends in Christ, It is difficult to believe that July is upon us! In my experience, it is a festive month, full of friends and celebratory activities. We welcome back returning parishioners and new visitors alike. However, in my own experience, it is also a time when I often forget about my self-care, my quiet time with God. I find it is extremely easy to get swept up in all of the hustle and bustle of Tahoe in the summer, that I forget to encounter God in the silent moments of my life. Yet, I think this time of year is when I most need such moments, such sacred space, such a well of solitude upon which to draw day in and day out. For such simplicity with my God keeps me steady and ready for the work of ministry. Some of you may recall that I preached on Elijah’s encounter with the Divine in the “sound of sheer silence,” just one week ago on June 23rd. Yet I think this story deserves some reinforcing. Because if we are honest with ourselves, this season and this society will do everything it can to draw our attention away from encountering God in the silence. It is far too easy to find ourselves all consumed by the chaos, no matter how fun and lovely it may be. Yet, my friends, God is craving quiet time with you. God desires a moment of solitude with you. God wants to sit in the silence with you. Such sacred space, such sound of sheer silence, does not have to be extravagant, but can be so simple. It can be taking a forest bath alone by the creek, or sipping your cup of coffee in the early hours of the morning before the rest of the household awakens, or walking the labyrinth in our outdoor chapel. It can be saying a prayer in the car before stepping out into your next excursion, or praising God for the warmth of the Sierra sun as you spread your towel upon the beach. My prayer for each and every one of you, is that you may each find that sacred space this summer, to encounter God in the sound of sheer silence. God’s peace, Sarah+

Clergy Housing update:

Over the past eight months, the Clergy Housing Task Force has been working diligently to

find a solution to housing for our current and future clergy of St. Patrick's. After the

Vestry's deliberation of all of our options and possibilities as a parish, we are now

successfully under contract at 798 Geraldine Drive. We plan to close on the property by

July 31st. The church will hold the title for this home, so that it will be available for years

to come. Also, the current clergy housing allowance, a piece of our Rector's compensation

package, will be substituted for the mortgage. That being said, we are still gathering the

final funds for a down payment on the property. With a mix of diocesan contributions, St.

Patrick's savings, and parishioners' support, we are making this dream a reality! Please

keep our community and clergy in your prayers during this transition. We will also keep

you apprised as this milestone for our congregation draws closer. A special thanks again

to our Task Force, our Vestry, and our Finance Committee, and all you have helped

immensely on the project. We could not have made this happen without so many

members of our beloved community.

Top 10 Reasons to Attend the 2019 Ceili Award Gala!

Friday, September 13, 6:00 pm The Chateau, Incline Village

10. You’ve just GOT to find out how to pronounce the name of this party. (Well, we’ll give you this one: “Kay-lee.”) 9. You’ve got that kilt hanging in your closet . . . and find too few occasions to wear it. You’re in luck! This is a “Celtic Black Tie” event with elegance and flair. 8. September. Kids are back in school, tourists are thinning out, Tahoe weather is still fantastic . . . and you need an evening out. This will be an adults-only evening of fine dining and wine at The Chateau. Relax and enjoy. 7. Remember River Dance? Always secretly wished to kick up your heels this way? We’ll have Celtic musicians and traditional Irish dances for you to try. Step up, and step lively! 6. This is a great opportunity to entertain your friends and neighbors. You might host a table, round up some party-goers to sponsor a table together, or buy an extra ticket for a friend. Or you might be that friend, and agree to come! 5. This Ceili won’t exhaust St. Patrick’s big party spirit. Come sign up for fun “Buy-In Parties,” hosted by creative, generous parishioners. (You might even bid to take home the giant “Wine Barrow” that’s always wildly popular.) 4. NOW WE’RE GETTING TO THE HEART OF IT ALL. All funds raised from this event will support St. Patrick’s charitable activities to seek light and share love. Strong outreach to heal and nurture our community benefits many. 3. More than a party, this annual Gala will spotlight a remarkable community member who leads us in spirit and love. This year, DONNA AXTON, our exceptional Music Director, will receive St. Patrick’s first CEILI AWARD. We’re thrilled to honor her at this spirited evening, and in worship on Sunday, 9/15. 2. A traditional Irish Ceili weaves together a community in the rhythm of dance, music, and song. Join in: you’re important to our congregation. (And loved.) *1* Help uplift the people of North Tahoe/Truckee and celebrate our honoree, Donna, with your presence and prayers. Let’s embrace the Ceili spirit together!

Before springing into those relaxing summer days the Outreach Committee wants to let everyone know that during Lent and Eastertide this parish supported three needs:

The first was for the Presiding Bishop’s traditional Good Friday Offering for the Diocese of Jerusalem and the Middle East to which St. Patrick’s gave $350. The next offering was for Project M.A.N.A.’s Virtual Food Drive which garnered $335 towards this fundraising effort. St. Patrick’s has been pleased to support this important community organization over the years and will continue to do so as Project M.A.N.A. moves into a new phase under an umbrella organization named Sierra Community House. This will be a group including Project M.A.N.A., North Tahoe Family Resource Center, Tahoe Safe Alliance and Truckee Family Resource Center and will have a newly established Board of Directors and offices to be housed at Parasol in Incline Village. Project M.A.N.A.’s Thursday Food distribution to its clients will continue at St. Patrick’s on Thursday afternoons. The third area of support by our parish was for matching funds for Galilee camper scholarships. Our Rector Sarah and the Outreach Committee asked for a match of $1,000 and we are thrilled to report that our generous parish raised $1,790. So with $2,790 the funds allowed St. Patrick’s to give 4 scholarships for our own campers (Parker, Gaines, John Paul, and Isabella) and donate the remaining money to camperships in need of funding at Galilee. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all who contributed so generously to our Lenten and Eastertide outreach needs. As a parish we are so blessed to have so many caring parish members. ~Connie Skidmore

Congratulations to

Lily Price Skelly! St. Patrick’s Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that our 2019 Incline High School graduate, Lily Price, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to go towards her college choice, the University of Puget Sound. Lily is an outstanding graduate who plans to major in English and double minor in neuroscience and economics. Lily eventually wants to be a Veterinarian. Among the awards Lily received at the IHS Awards night on June 12th, in addition to St. Pat’s award, were a Dave and Cheryl Duffield Foundation Scholarship for $1,000, an AAUW Scholarship for $3,000, the Incline Village Nursery School Alumni Scholarship for $500, an Advanced Placement Capstone Diploma, an AP Scholar of Distinction and Valedictorian. At St. Patrick’s we know Lily to be a caring person who is involved with her local community as well as the global community. In 2017 our parish supported Lily and a group of IHS students to journey to Costa Rica under the auspices of “Green Communities” to work and teach farmers there to use organic farm methods. Our best wishes go with Lily as she moves on with her higher education!

Welcome to

St. Patrick’s Shamrock Page 9

As many of you know, we have changed over to a cloud based church database! If you haven’t already done so, please fill out the form on the front foyer coffee table and return to the office. Your information is stored securely and is only accessible to our members with a login and password. WHAT’S THE PROCESS? 1. Fill out the form on the front foyer coffee table. 2. After your form has been entered into the system, you will get an EMAIL invitation

from Realm to join our online community. Check your spam folder! 3. Create an online account with Realm (login and password) 4. Click the Realm link on our website to access your account and our online directory!

(www.tahoeepiscopal.org) The online directory is where you can update your personal information, upload a personal and/or family photo, and view the contact information for your fellow parishioners! Need a phone number and address? Check Realm!!! Not all members are in the directory, depending on their privacy choices, so you may still need to call the office (775-831-1418). HAVE YOU BEEN GETTING OUR EMAILS? We have been able to email you directly from Realm! Let us know if you want to be added to the list or if you’d like to be removed. We’ll be sad to see you go though. Our goal right now is to stick to a once-per-week email blast with announcements and other important information. WHAT’S COMING IN THE FUTURE? 1. The ability for online giving directly from your Realm account 2. Electronic communications from group leaders for those that we serve (small

groups, young families, etc) 3. The ability to scan a payment for a special collection directly from the Parish Notes

in your bulletin! IN A NUTSHELL: We are excited to move into the future with Realm in an effort to streamline our communications and giving. Let the staff know if you have questions, and thank you for your patience and support!

WELCOME TO THE ALTAR GUILD

I, as Chair of the Altar Guild, have been remiss in not regularly “shouting out” the

consistent work your quiet, silent, mostly hidden members of the Altar group perform.

I reach out to anyone and everyone who might consider joining our small group to train

and/or become familiar with our responsibilities. Anyone can serve in very small ways,

“many hands make light work”. When you observe the beauty of the Sanctuary, the

continuously burning candles, lovely floral arrangements, book readings marked, hymn

numbers displayed, remember there are just a few volunteered hands responsible.

If you appreciate and consider these seemingly small but impactful gestures important,

please seriously consider joining our group. If you attend the 8am service there are simple

clean-up duties and set up for 10 am. After 10 there are the same simple clean-up duties

and a few extras. Contemplate becoming aware, join us in the sacristy, we all have great

fun!

Prayerfully submitted,

Marilyn Gareffa
