From the President: ...

Wow, March is here already. Before you know it it’ll be spring. Make sure you get your bikes ready for the riding season On March 6 is the ABATE Legislative Day. Please show up if at all possible. We want to present a strong united front to our Senators and Representatives. I want to give a big thanks to all of our members to helped at the swap meet. Byron

217 DINNER COMMITTEE After more than 30 years of Dinners, it’s time for our chapter to spin off the dinner into it’s own 501c3 Charity. This will allow corporations to donate directly to the 217 Dinner. This new organization has meetings on the second Tuesday, March 12, 6:00 PM at the Golden Corral. This new organization is still 100% ABATE. The LLA President is automatically a voting officer. The bylaws are being written and paperwork has been filed with the IL Secretary of State. James Roady is the Chair of this new committee. However, the committee has several opening. You are invited to attend and become a leader for this charity effort. The 217 Dinner Committee is also thinking of providing dinners for holidays other than Thanksgiving.

There has been a drop in attendance at the ABATE State Party! I have a few questions for y’all to consider discussing at the next chapter meeting. 1) Have you ever been to the State Party 2) Would you consider going to the State Party? 3) If you have been, why didn’t you go to back? 4) What would make the State Party more attractive to you? I would like to see everyone put on their thinking caps and help this organization come upwith some solutions to this particular problem. I myself have never been to one, but I am going to remedy that this year. With that being said, I am out. Thanx for listening! Sincerely Ray A. (Uncle Meat) Panting

T-shirts, Hoodies, Pins and Patches As you know I had the book of products at the Chapter meeting, I hope you all got a chance to look to see ALL the possibilities. I want US to pick out wearables to be seen in. I am looking for donations for the Easter Basket that they will be buying chances on for the Easter Basket Run to HOPE. We will also be having a 50/50 drawing that same day of the Run on April 14th. I am still searching for that spot to go to afterwards. I am working diligently to put the final touches. If you haven’t picked your child or home, PLEASE get with me and we can meet / e-mail / text / phone to get you the perfect one and keep it in your budget. St. Patrick’s Day Parade We have the St. Patrick’s Day Parade coming up Saturday, March 16, 2019. LINE UP is 11:30. We have the big ABATE truck, we need walkers to walk with the banner and bike riders to show off a stunt or two. The Staging area is for parade participants. Walkers should park away from the Staging area. See you there. HOPE Easter Basket Someone shared a story with me about the HOPE Easter Basket run and I would like to share it with you. He started out that he was not able to go, then at the last minute he was, work and coverage some-thing like that, any ways, he had to go to the quickest store possible, Dollar General. He then had to decide what to get, he spent $40 dollars on stuff, toys, socks cards, bubbles. Just kid stuff. Grabbing a basket for it to fit in. He hurried up and came in late, giving it to a young man that sat there quietly, waiting his turn, some general basket put on his lap. He went through the toys, cards, bubbles, and came to the socks “I GOT SOCKS” I GOT SOCKS” he yelled, getting him almost in trouble. He was happy with socks. The children live in a group home, away from family, some families rarely visit. It is the little things that people do in OUR lives that make a difference. ABATE Members play a special role in their lives. We are the Easter Bunny to make them feel loved and bring the little treats like SOCKS!! It is not what you spend, it’s the effort that is behind everything you do. I do not what anyone to take food out of your mouths to help. I DO want each of you INVOLVED anyway you can. We are a FAMILY and support one another. AN OFFER goes a long way. I may have baskets that need a ride to a home. I may need wrapping of baskets. Life is not about money. Life is about people, and some people have less than you. We need to share if we can.

Legislative

There’s an old adage in politics attributed to Otto von Bismarck: “If you like laws and sausag-es, you should never watch either one being made.”

I’m not sure about how pretty either process is, but I can tell you that both have common traits. Law making, like sausage making, is a slow grinding process. In Illinois a bill must be filed in the House or Senate, gain sponsors, refer to committee, pass at a hearing, refer to the floor, be read three times (once per day), then pass the House or Senate - only to be trans-ferred to the other side where it goes through this process all over again. Even the minimum wage hike, a bill many say was “shoved through”, still took almost two weeks to pass.

I bring this up because of the insane number of clickbait articles and “OH MY GOD, the sky is falling” reactions I’ve seen on social media. These reactions are often to bills filed with one sponsor. Whether it be some crazy gun bill, the proposed mileage tax (which was only a pilot program), or some other new outrage of the day. The bills had zero chance of ever moving, but the online fear factory had people freaking out daily.

Here’s the thing about freaking out daily. If you’re calling / emailing legislators daily about whatever the new crisis is, do you think you’re getting through? If you call about 3 or 4 differ-ent topics in 3 days time, how does the legislator figure out what’s really important to you? Does the legislator start paying less attention to your calls because you call about everything? The answers to these questions vary by office, but it’s something you should think about be-fore acting on whatever the outrage of the day is.

ABATE has a fairly capable legislative department. Todd Vandermyde and I watch dozens of bills, and talk to our sources under the dome to keep tabs on the issues important to you. If something is on the move, and needs a reaction - we will let you know. There are bills pertain-ing to profiling, autonomous vehicles, poker runs, off-road vehicles, and many other issues. None of them are moving yet though. This season has been very slow to start. We do expect things to really pick up in April / May.

If you have a question about a bill’s

chances, please feel free to contact me.

Until then, please try to relax a little and

save some fight for when we will really

need it. Trust me, it will be needed later

this season. I hope to see you all May 5th

at the Freedom Rally. Until then - Keep

this Shiny Side Up - SKI
