No Joke: Laughter Really is an Amazing Medicine

Did you know that April is National Humor Month? This lesser-known observance starts with April Fool’s Day and is intended to heighten awareness of the therapeutic benefits of humor. And while laughter can’t cure all ailments, it certainly has some great short- and long-term benefits for your health! In the short-term, laughter increases oxygen intake, which can stimulate your heart, lungs and muscles and release endorphins in the brain. It can also relieve tension by aiding

circulation and muscle relaxation. In the long-term, humor can improve your immune system and even help relieve pain, since it helps with the production of the body’s natural painkillers. Laughter can also help people cope with difficult situations, make it easier to connect with people, and lessen depression and anxiety. So take it as an excuse to bring more laughter into your life! Get some friends together

for a funny movie or comedy special – and come prepared with jokes and anecdotes to keep the mood high and laughter flowing!

The CDC currently recommends that those over 50 consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day. (One teaspoon of salt contains roughly 2,325 milligrams.) For those with kidney disease, high blood pressure or diabetes, keeping sodium intake low is particularly important. But with the prevalence of processed and frozen foods, it can be difficult to

select products that are tasty yet low-sodium. Here are a few tips to make the process a little simpler: • Limit the amount of sodium-heavy foods like deli meats, canned soups, pasta, rice mixes and frozen meals. Avoid salty snacks like chips and pretzels or foods packed in salt water like pickles or olives. • Drain and rinse all canned beans and vegetables before using. Choose fresh vegetables whenever possible.

• Use herbs and spices for seasoning instead of salt. Check seasoning blends to ensure they are low in sodium.

News

On April 1, we will be officially opening our enhanced care unit here at Heritage Court. Having both memory care and enhanced care together in one building will allow us to better meet the care needs of all of our residents, while providing their families with the peace of mind that comes with knowing their loved ones are receiving high-quality, individualized care. We would like to invite you to one of our open houses – on April 7 or 14 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. – to learn more about the changes we’ve made. We appreciate your patience as we put the finishing touches on our quality improvements. If you have any questions or would like to know more about the changes, please contact our director of quality, Amanda Runnoe, at [email protected]

Evening with the Cub Scouts

On March 11, Heritage Court residents spent the evening with local Cub Scouts Pack 34. We enjoyed watching some of the boys being awarded badges, as well as crafting a fun “pot of gold” art project with the Scouts. What a fun night!

Clockwise from top left: A scout mentor assists Marion F. with applying glue to her craft pieces; a proud scout shows off his completed project as Betty looks on; a kindergarten-age scout proudly tells Joan that he knows what order the colors of the rainbow are.
