WILL YOU ANSWER THE CALL

“Don’t miss that call!” Who of us hasn’t had a telephone

conversation interrupted because the person

with whom we were talking needing to answer

a “call waiting” signal. We use all kind of

devises for people to get through to us and

often walk around with a cell phone in our

hand so that we don’t miss that all important

call.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a spiritual cell phone

so that God could reach us at anytime day or night by sim-

ply calling our spiritual cell phone number? I wonder how

many of us would walk around with the cell phone turned

off, or even worse allow God’s call to be interrupted by a

seemingly more important “call waiting” signal from our

world.

In this week’s Gospel reading, we see Martha and Mary

being linked by faith to Jesus and his message of resurrec-

tion and life. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming,

she went to meet him. Mary heard Jesus’ call through Mar-

tha, The Master is here and calls for you. And as soon as

she heard that Jesus called for her, she rose quickly and

went to him. Do we hear Jesus’ call or are we discon-

nected? Are we rising in faith to respond to his call or are

we distracted by the many cares of our world?

Jesus chose to punctuate the message of resurrection and

life by raising Lazarus bodily from death. This is the third

time Jesus raised someone from the dead, demonstrating

each time that he holds the keys to life. But it was in this

instance, a precursor of his own death and resurrection, that

he chose to clearly articulate the promise of

resurrection and life for those who believe. It

is as Christ himself once expressed it: Amen,

amen, I say to you, he who hears my word,

and believes him who sent me, has life ever-

lasting, and does not come to judgement, but

has passed from death to life (John 5:24).

After Golgotha, death was never the same. To believe in

Jesus Christ means to share in his deathlessness, as he him-

self said we should: He who believes shall have life ever-

lasting, even in death.

We read the story of Lazarus and marvel, one who was

dead for four days had risen alive. But there is a more mar-

velous truth hidden in this week’s readings. Ezekiel fore-

tells the promise that God will put his Spirit within us and

we will live, really live, not just physically but eternally.

The indwelling of us by God does not happen after we die

but begins here and now. Blessed Paul the Apostle truly

teaches: we have received not the spirit of this world, but

the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the

gifts bestowed on us by God.

How different must have been the lives of Lazarus, Mar-

tha, and Mary after this experience. Not simply because

Lazarus lived again after being dead for four days, but be-

cause they came to experience a life that already here on

earth reaches into eternity. Martha’s words to Mary echo in

our ears, The Master is here and calls for you.

Jesus still calls to us, offering this resurrection life to us

as well. How will you respond?

our hearts and to be reconciled with the Fa-

ther. Come join in at St. Patrick Reconcilia-

tion Service on Friday April 7th after the

Station of the Cross. There will be 3 priest

available to you to hear confessions.

CHURCH STAIRS PROJECT

After many months of discussions and meetings with the

Property Committee and engineers, the Property Committee

and I have finally come to the conclusion regarding the re-

placement of the front stairs to our parish. In the best inter-

est of our parishioners and the future, the decision was

made to replace the stairs and build a new accessible ramp

with concrete. Using concrete will ensure that the entrance

into our parish will be inclusive to all who join us in wor-

ship and will last for 100+ years.

The Property Committee and I expect this project to be-

gin soon after Easter. The process of obtaining permits and

a minor variance from the City of Port Colborne is currently

underway. Once this has been obtained, construction can

proceed.

The estimated cost of this project is $90,000.00 plus

taxes.

As you know, since being appointed as your pastor, I have

not asked you for money but I am appealing to you now for

your financial support to help our parish raise the necessary

funds to pay for this project. With your assistance we can

do this without going into debt. May God bless you and our

parish as we look forward to the future.

Fr Wesley

HOSPITALITY HELP

Our Hospitality Ministry is looking for people who

would be will to assist our congregation at the 11 am Mass.

Christ's ministry was one of hospitality, extending a

hand and welcoming all with open arms! Following

Christ's example, our Hospitality Ministers open doors and

warmly greet all that come to worship with us. The role of

the Hospitality Minister is extremely important! Often, the

Hospitality Minister is the only one to actually speak to

many who worship with us each week. They are the ones

who make people feel welcome and at home here at St. Pat-

rick … they are the face of our parish.

Serving as a Hospitality Minister is a wonderful opportu-

nity to get to know other parishioners. If you are interested

in serving Christ in this wonderful Ministry, please contact

Tim Grawey at 905 834-6791 or [email protected].
