MEMORIAL
IN MEMORY OF: David Pottratz by Rick Pottratz.
Last fall I shared with our Parish Pastoral Council and Commissions that I dream of the day when the highlight for each of us as parishioners is saying “Amen” as we receive
the Body and Blood of Christ. That I dream of the day when people drive by our church and tell their children and their children’s children that “Jesus lives there”, and those children will respond “I know”. More than two years ago I had the opportunity to visit a vibrant Catholic Church in Timonium, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore. At this church, my dreams seem to be the reality. It was a church where the pastor and parish administrator had recently written a book about their experience of leading a parish that was very similar to ours in many ways, including size. Weekly Mass attendance was 1200-1500, but with some changes attendance had grown to 6000. Immediately the thought was, do what they are doing and we grow too! Not so easy, or else every parish in the country would be following their example. The Diocese of Wichita, Kansas, over the last forty years is also a place that has been able to cultivate dreams. It has seen growth in the number of Catholic Schools in the Diocese (which are tuition free), vibrant Faith Formation
programs, numerous seminarians, enthusiastic participation in parish activities, tremendous financial support, and the list goes on. Again it would seem quite simple, just repeat what they are doing and instant success! If it were that simple, every diocese would be doing what they are doing. My take away from both: it can be done, is not very complicated, requires a lot of work, demands we set the interest of the entire parish above our own self-interests, involves trust, is an enjoyable process as long as we stay mutually supportive of one another with our efforts, and most importantly centers on forming disciples while being rooted in prayer. Our Parish leadership (trustees, Pastoral Council, Finance Council, Commissions, and staff) has been reflecting on how this process can be incorporated into the life of our parish. While it is not complicated, unlike a capital campaign there is no program to purchase or firm to hire. Instead we need to pray, study, and begin somewhere. The place to begin seems to be in regard to hospitality. It struck me when I first arrived at Saint Patrick Parish that we have a great deal of negative signage in place. We tell people not to walk their dogs on our property, don’t distribute materials, we are protected by a security company, and don’t take food upstairs. What is missing is any positive signage. This may seem like something minor, but does highlight the idea that we could be doing more in the area of welcome and hospitality. To launch some changes concerning hospitality and other areas of parish life that I hope can help us become more vibrant, it is time for us to make a significant change with our Mass times. Since the transfer of Father Patrick, many have inquired whether we would maintain the same number of Masses on Sunday morning and during the week. I believe it is time for us to make a change, but not simply because we have one less priest serving our parish. My dream is it will allow us to become a better Catholic community. Therefore, after consulting with our Parish Pastoral Council, staff, and various committees, beginning the weekend of June 4-5 we will go from having three Masses to two on Sunday morning, at 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM. Saturday evening will remain at 5:00 PM. During the summer months, beginning the weekend of June 4-5 until the weekend prior to Labor Day, we will also have a Mass on Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM. During the summer months we will also move the Tuesday morning Mass to the evening, at 5:45 PM. This will give people the opportunity who may not otherwise have a chance to attend a weekday Mass a chance to do so. I realize that these changes will be met with a variety of opinions, thoughts, concerns, and ideas. However I believe that the changes will ultimately make us a better parish and form disciples.

2ND SUNDAY OF EASTER
"Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them,
'Peace be with you.'" The disciples were paralyzed by fear.
After the Crucifixion, they had locked themselves in a room
and were keeping a low profile. They didn't want to end up
how Jesus had ended up. But the Lord stepped right into
this paranoia and dispelled it in an instant: "The disciples
rejoiced when they saw the Lord."
Although these first Christians were very concerned about
preserving their lives, the fact is that living holed up in an
attic wasn't a life of much freedom or joy. Jesus wanted his
followers to have the fullness of life, but this required trust
in him and his promises. As today's Gospel puts it, through
the belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, "you may
have life in his name." When we come to really accept who
Jesus is, there is no more need for a life of slavery to fear--
whatever that fear may be, whether it's fear for our health;
fear for our reputation; fear for our comfort; or even fear
that our sins are too big for forgiveness.
Today as we celebrate the feast of Divine Mercy, we
remember that God's love is strong enough to conquer the
greatest of all human fears: death itself. This confidence
leads us to a renewed joy. As Pope Francis wrote in his
declaration of this, the Year of Mercy, "Mercy is the force
that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage
to look to the future with hope." Once we are firmly
established in this hope, we are called to be witnesses of
mercy to others. The Holy Father continues with a
challenge for all of us, "Jesus asks us also to forgive and to
give. To be instruments of mercy because it was we who
first received mercy from God."

SOCIAL CONCERN
TUESDAY IS SPRING ELECTION DAY
“Politics is a noble mission to promote the common good.
As such, it is about ethics and principles as well as issues,
candidates, and officeholders. To engage in "politics," then,
is more than getting involved in current polemics and
debates; it is about acting with others and through
institutions for the benefit of all. The fact that much of our
political rhetoric has become very negative and that
political polarization seems to have grown should not
dissuade us from the high calling to work for a world that
allows everyone to thrive, a world in which all persons, all
families, have what they need to fulfill their God-given
destiny. In our democracy, one aspect of this task for all of
us requires that we weigh issues and related policies. In
this brief summary, we bishops call attention to issues with
significant moral dimensions that should be carefully
considered in each campaign and as policy decisions are
made in the years to come.”
The above is excerpted from the Catholic Council of
Bishops publication, “Forming Consciences for Faithful
Citizenship – Part II.” Please visit their website for a
discussion of many issues of importance to Catholics. You
will NOT be told HOW to vote. You will be given
principles to consider as YOU decide.
Take a couple minutes to visit the website at usccb.org, and
click “Issues and Actions” to find the “Forming
Consciences for Faithful Citizenship” link
