USCCB Liturgy Of The Hours (cont’d) the true light enlightening all people (see Jn 1:9) and "the sun of justice" (Mal 4:2), "rising from on high" (Lk 1:78). Hence, we can well understand the advice of St. Cyprian: "There should be prayer in the morning so that the resurrection of the Lord may thus be celebrated" (GILH, no. 38). Daytime Prayer (can be prayed at Midmorning, Midday, or Midafternoon) "Following a very ancient tradition Christians have made a practice of praying out of private devotion at various times of the day, even in the course of their work, in imitation of the Church in apostolic times. In different ways with the passage of time this tradition has taken the form of a liturgical celebration. "Liturgical custom in both East and West has retained midmorning, midday, and midafternoon prayer, mainly because these hours were linked to a commemoration of the events of the Lord's passion and of the first preaching of the Gospel" (GILH, no. 74-75).

Evening Prayer "When evening approaches and the day is already far spent, evening prayer is celebrated in order that 'we may give thanks for what has been given us, or what we have done well, during the day.' We also recall the redemption through the prayer we send up 'like incense in the Lord's sight,' and in which 'the raising up of our hands' becomes 'an evening sacrifice' (see Ps 141:2). This sacrifice 'may also be interpreted more spiritually as the true evening sacrifice that our Savior the Lord entrusted to the apostles at supper on the evening when he instituted the sacred mysteries of the Church or of the evening sacrifice of the next day, the sacrifice, that is, which, raising his hands, he offered to the Father at the end of the ages for the salvation of the whole world.' Again, in order to fix our hope on the light that knows no setting, 'we pray and make petition for the light to come down on us anew; we implore the coming of Christ who will bring the grace of eternal light.' Finally, at this hour we join with the Churches of the East in calling upon the 'joy-giving light of that holy glory, born of the immortal, heavenly Father, the holy and blessed Jesus Christ; now that we have come to the setting of the sun and have seen the evening star, we sing in praise of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit…'" (GILH, no. 39). Night Prayer "Night prayer is the last prayer of the day, said before retiring, even if that is after midnight" (GILH, no. 84).The Psalms that are chosen for Night Prayer are full of confidence in the Lord.

Come join the St. Matt’s Music Team for the Summer!

We have a couple opportunities for you this summer to offer your gift of music to God. Beginning June 25, come join the Saturday 5:00pm Summer Choir. Junior High students or older are invited. This is a non-intimidating way to consider joining the Adult Choir in the fall or, just summer. The music is easy and up-beat. Come to the piano at 4:15pm on Saturday to rehearse the music for the day. It is a great way to give to God your gift of music.

Consider joining the 10:45am

Contemporary Band. If you love to sing, or play guitar or even another instrument, consider joining us at 10:00am by the piano to learn the music of the day. Generally upbeat, you’ll find the music easy to learn and again, a great way to give thanks to God by sharing your talent. Contact Jim Dahlstrom at 344-7622x.111 for more info. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Jubilee Year of Mercy

Twelfth Sunday in Ordi-nary Time

Today, as he often does, Luke portrays Jesus “praying in solitude” (Luke 9:18). The Jubilee Year of Mercy invites us to redis-cover the value of silence as the prayerful setting in which to reflect on the ways in which God’s mer-cy transforms our lives, in order to make mercy the heart of our own lifestyle. But in a line that sounds odd, Jesus “rebuked” his disciples “and directed them not to tell any-one” (9:20–21) after they professed their faith in Jesus as “the Christ of

God” (9:20). Jesus challenges us also to profess our faith not by what we say, but by what we do: take up our own cross daily (9:23) and “bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2). Our gratitude for God’s mercy toward us should make us instruments of God’s mercy toward all. Then, as Zechariah proph-esies in today’s first read-ing, the fountain of God’s mercy will open to purify the whole world from the sin and selfishness that cause suffering and sor-row to so many (Zechariah 13:1).

Stewardship by the Book “Who do you say that I am?” Jesus asks Peter in today’s Gospel. Does my use of gifts and talents entrusted to me accurately reflect my answer to that same question? How willing am I to deny myself, take up my cross, and follow in His steps?

Happy Father’s Day!

God our Father, through the intercession of St. Joseph, foster father of your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, we give you thanks and praise for all fathers in the world. We pray for them so that they may find courage and

perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice. We remember fathers, grandfathers, and great grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with

their love. Amen.

__Catholics striving for Holiness
