Registration for 2016-17 Religious Education

Grade 1 is the grade that children should begin attending religious education classes to begin preparation for the sacraments and to begin growing into a relationship with Jesus and His Church.

We are still accepting new registrations for children entering Grade 1. If you are new to our program, we ask that you please come into the Parish Office to see Diane to complete a registration form. Please bring a copy of your child's baptism certificate with you. We have a choice of days, Sunday 9-10:15 AM or Tuesday 3:45- 5 PM, to make it easier for you and your family's needs. If you know of any other children who will be entering Grade 1 in September, please spread the word about our program so that everyone can begin this journey of faith together.

If you have been away from our program for a year or more, we want to welcome you back. Each year of religious education builds upon the next, so that each student has a solid foundation in faith. We will work with you and your child to help them to reach the level of knowledge needed to begin preparation for Confirmation, which takes place in Grade 9. Please email Anthony ([email protected]) to talk about how we can get your child's faith formation back on track.

Confirmation registration forms were mailed out a few weeks ago and were due back on August 15.

Crop-Walk For Hunger Please join us as we support the Nutley area Crop-walk on Sunday, October 23rd at 2 p.m. in the oval at the high school. We are in need of walkers and donors to raise fund for local food banks. 1/2 of the money raised will stay right here to help people in the Nutley-Belleville area.

You raise the crushed (the) disheartened, you make the broken

whole. A wise pastor regularly referred to our parish as the “Church of the Wounded.” Jack understood that behind the veneer of nice clothes, fancy cars and smiling faces were people who embodied the R.EM. song; ”Everybody Hurts.”

Today’s gathering hymn “You Gather in the Outcast” (#627) has been on my mind since we first sang it a several weeks ago. Initially, I had a hard time relating to the word outcast. After playing it instrumentally before several masses a slight variation on the title (i.e. You Gather in the Outsider) helped me relate the text to my own life.

Last weekend, I asked some people to read the hymn text and share if and how they related to being an outcast or outsider.

• A shy person who was transplanted as a young adult shared that she still feels like a new-comer “standing outside the window and looking in.“

• A soon-to-be step mom shared the sadness of being “cast aside” by the biological parents of her step-children’s friends.

As a divorced parent of two girls I have felt “left-out” of preparations for special events that naturally connect better with a same-gender parent. Not being in the day to day lives of my girls also leaves me feeling “out of touch” with the children who I once saw and cared for on a daily basis.

In today’s gospel we hear the story of Lazarus’ and the rich man. For me, the rich man symbolizes the ultimate insider and Lazarus who has been cast out to the fringe of society. The story parallels the song as God recasts Lazarus as one who sits in the bosom of Abraham.

The words of my wise pastor have recently been echoed by Pope Francis some 20 years later.

“The thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity. “

-Pope Francis

The Holy Father’s words “nearness and proximity” is precisely the charism that led the world to take notice of and the church to beatify Teresa of Calcutta who ministered to those I need in a radically Christ-like way.

“You lay the feast before us, you bid us come and eat.

But, oh, before you serve us, you kneel and wash our feet.

Blessed to have worked in ministry with Fr. Trinidad Cuevas; a good and faithful priest. Vaya con Dios.
