EditorialMemories are important. They say your school days are the best of your life. Sotoo, the task of capturing the memories of these years is of great importance tous. Every St. Mary’s College Annual is published retrospectively but the productionof these particular volumes is very late indeed. The ideal way to record memoriesis quickly. They fade with the passing of time. Working on the 02/03 and 03/04Annuals after such a length of time has been difficult; records have been filedaway, memories are rusty and some things which we would like to have includedare simply gone.

We have done our best and have been assisted by many staff, pupils, past andpresent and parents who have raided attics for lost photos, racked their brains toput names to faces and, most importantly, offered their support in producingthese memories.

We must apologise to those students whose photos are not in this annual, someof the originals have gone missing. We can only assure you that the more recentfiles are intact and that future annuals will have your photo in them. Wherepossible we have included classes that do not have formal photos by using asmany informal photos of them as possible.

How did this all happen? One is reminded of the old joke, with three haplessindividuals called somebody, nobody and everybody. Everybody thoughtsomebody was doing it, somebody nearly did it but in the end nobody did it.This situation has now been corrected.

It has taken the organisational skills of Leonie Blackburn and, the proximity tothe action of, your Editor to gather all that remains and put it together into thisvolume. We hope it will stand well with the rest on the shelves of the wider St.Mary’s family. And, to a greater or lesser degree, it will allow us to relive thememories that are so precious.

These Annuals are dedicated to the individuals and groups that made thedevelopment of the Fr. Barry Hall and the extension to the Senior School possible. This is particularly fitting as the development spanned the two academic years. The hall is a remarkable addition to the school buildings.

Special thanks are due to the many that helped this Annual see the light of day;but in particular Fr. John Flavin, Clive Byrne, Liam Naughton, Brian Wall, ColmSweeney, Denis Murphy, Isabel Kelly, Pauline Fox, Georgina Collins, MaryO’Donnell, Marian Fitzpatrick and a host of current and past students. Withouttheir help the pages you hold would be empty.

On a technical note, these Annuals represent a record of the 103rd and 104th

Academic Years of the College’s operation. It is not 103 years since the Collegeopened but it was closed for a decade during the last century. We have alsoabandoned the idea of numbering the Volumes of the Annual as the yearsthemselves are the best reference. Keen observers will also notice that thedescription of the Arms of St. Mary’s has changed. Rest assured we have notchanged the crest, rather made its description a little more user friendly.

The Arms of the College

SYMBOLISM

The Escutcheon is quartered. On the right base (as you observe it) there is theunchangeable five point silver star with golden rays, symbolic of fidelity to itspurpose of shedding light and guidance in the pursuit of Him Who enlightensevery man and Who is the “Bright and Morning Star”. (Apoc XXII. 16).

The upper right bears the Cross, the emblem of trials and difficulties. It is ingold on a silver ground, symbolic of the precious outcome of trials well borne. These two symbols combine to produce the College motto: “Fidelitas in Arduis”(Fidelity in Difficulties).

On the upper left quarter there is the Dove in silver, symbolic of the Holy Ghost, from which descend seven golden rays, the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, essential in the practice of “Fidelitas in Arduis”.

The left base bears a red heart transfixed with a sword and encircled with goldenroses. This is symbolic of the Holy Heart of Mary, suffering - the supreme purelyhuman type of “Fidelitas in Arduis”. The golden roses symbolise the reward thatcomes from such fidelity.

DEDICATION to all who helped our Development Programme

As we celebrate the opening and initial usage of the Fr. Barry Hall and theadjacent development, it is right that we should dedicate these Annuals toall those who supported us so magnificently in making this enterprisepossible. Most particularly, we salute the parents of current pupils for theirexceptional generosity in their response to our Fundraising Campaign. Weremember too the Project Committee members, together with the architect, surveyor, builder and other service providers. We trust that our studentsand other users of the new facilities will appreciate their work andcontribution, and respect the magnificent amenities provided for them.

All were ably supported by a fantasticchorus of boys from St. Mary’s and girlsfrom St. Louis playing the roles of:orphans, street urchins, Fagin’s boys, street traders, tavern frequenters andmore besides.

The 2002 production of Lionel Bart’sOliver! was the final musical to takeplace in the Junior School hall in St.Mary’s College. The students of St.Mary’s College and St. Louis HighSchool had the enticing challenge ofdoing justice to one of the mostfamous and well-loved musicals, in avenue that had held some outstanding

shows down the years. A large numberof the cast had been in several musicalsbefore, while others were embarking ontheir performing careers for the firsttime. The fact that these schoolproductions see so many cast membersreturning, as well as many budding, new performers joining them, istestament to the enjoyment that isgained from each production that goeson between the two schools. This was a disappointing andfrustrating season for the Club. TheClub lost out in eight semi-finals andfour finals. However, reaching thesestages of competitions does illustratethe level at which the Club performs.

SENIOR RUGBYThe Senior XV finished 10th of 16 inthe AIB All-Ireland League. The non-availability of our contracted playerswith Leinster was a contributory factorto our lack of success. A silver lining tothe AIL cloud was our retention of theShay Deering and Mick Smyth trophies, with a draw against Garryowen andvictory over Terenure respectively. Wereached the semi-final of the LeinsterSenior Cup and the quarter-final of the Leinster Championship. The teamwas captained by Gareth Gannon, whose individual performance andcommitment throughout the seasoncould not be faulted.

JUNIOR RUGBYThe JI s had a good season, losing thefinal of the JI League and, mostunusually, losing both the quarter-finaland the final of the Metropolitan Cup.Work that one out! The team wascaptained by Alan Shirley. The J2s,captained by Gavin Kelly, reached thefinals of the League and the O’ConnellCup, but were beaten in both. The J3sreached the final of the League, andthe quarter-final of the Cup. The J4smade it to the semi-final of theirLeague, but were beaten in the firstround of the Cup. The J5s also reachedthe semi-final of their League and,

similarly, were beaten in the first roundof the Cup. The J6s reached the semi-final of the Cup.

UNDER 20sThe Under 20s had a particularly goodseason, even if they were ultimatelydeprived of silverware. Under thecaptaincy of Simon Gibney, the teamreached the semi-final of both the JPFanagan League and the McCorry Cup.The team also competed in the AllIreland Millennium Cup where CorkConstitution, who ultimately won thetrophy, beat them in a terrific game inCork. The Under 20 Pennant team, captained by lan Murray, also reachedthe semifinal of their League, but werebeaten in the first round of the Cup.

WOMEN’S RUGBYThis year, for the first time, St. Mary’sRFC fielded a Woman’s Rugby team,

although none, it seems, were paststudents of the college. The teamCaptain was Samantha Howe. TheCoach, Donal Swift, is a past student.

DEVELOPMENTAs part of the Club’s policy of youthdevelopment, two Under 20 players,Jonathon Ellis and Adrian Copeland, spent ten weeks in New Zealand lastsummer. They were placed in localclubs by Brent Pope, who also kept awatchful eye on them throughout theirstay. This summer another two players,Cathal Connolly and BernardO’Donoghue have been chosen to traveldown under.

MINI RUGBYLast season St. Mary’s Mini Rugbyconsisted of teams from Under 7sthrough to Under 12s. Each team hadthree coaches plus a manager, with theassistance of 12 boys from transitionyear from St. Mary’s College. The UIIs &U12s also competed in “The Inaugural

Festival of Irish Rugby” in Bandon RFCin Cork, with the Under 11s finishingrunners-up and the Under 12s winningtheir section. The Under 12s also wonthe “Joe Soden” trophy at a Blitz inBlackrock RFC.

YOUTH RUGBYA new departure this season was a12s/13s development squad made upof, on average, 40 boys each week, from next September’s intake intoTempleogue College. This was run inco-operation with Mick Glynn. We seethis as an investment in the future ofrugby in the college and the Club.

OVER AGE RUGBY (VETS)The highlight of last season was, undoubtedly, the Vets’ tour to SouthAfrica. Two matches were played inSouth Africa, one in Cape Town andthe other in Stellenbosch, the heart ofrugby in South Africa. St. Mary’s wonboth matches, and did not concede apoint in either match, much to thesurprise of our hosts, no less than theplayers themselves.

REPRESENTATIVE HONOURSSt. Mary’s players continue todistinguish themselves at variousrepresentative levels, although onedisappointing fallout of these players’success is that we are not likely to seemany of them playing for the Club, orcertainly not on a regular basis. At thehighest level, Senior International, fourplayers regularly played for Ireland,Denis Hickie, Malcolm O’Kelly, VictorCostello and Keith Gleeson. For IrelandA, the Club provided Mark McHugh andEmmet Byrne. Twelve St. Mary’s playerswere contracted by the IRFU to play forLeinster during the season: Denis

Chief among these was ourLions celebration, at which wehonoured our eight St. Mary’s playerswho were honoured to be chosen toplay for the British and Irish Lions. Itwas a wonderful social and financiallysuccessful occasion. For the record theLions in attendance were Sean Lynch,Johnny Moloney, Tom Grace, TonyWard, Rodney O’Donnell, Paul Dean,Vincent Cunningham and CiaranFitzgerald, who had the distinction ofCaptaining the Lions. Many otherfunctions brightened up our yearincluding, a Wine Tasting Evening, aFashion Show, a Quiz Night, a RaceNight and a Corporate Lunch at thetime of the Ireland v England SixNations Match. In that same week wealso hosted a Schools Internationalbetween Ireland and England. We alsohosted Tag Rugby competitions allsummer and the All Ireland Finals inJuly, all of which contributed to a verysuccessful year for the Club financially.

With quiet determination and exceptionalapplication to training, the SCT ensuredthat the Senior Cup did not leave St.Mary’s easily. A team full of character andcommitment, led from the front by PaulNash and Stephen Grissing, did notconcede a try since before Christmas. TheCup campaign began with a great winover Clongowes, followed by a convincingwin against CBC Monkstown. Then it wastwo games against sister-collegeBlackrock before we advanced to asecond consecutive final – a feat lastachieved in 1966/67. Against Terenure,

the loss of Alex Hutchinson and thefatigue factor from the semi-final replaysaw us lose by the narrowest of margins. Not since 1976 had a team failed to winthe Cup without conceding a try! CliveByrne, David Breslin, Rodney O’Donnell,John Kilbride, and Ciaran O’Donnell hadan enormous input into the team’ssuccess.

Our Seconds under Ciaran O’Donnell andJohn Kilbride competed nobly against thebigger schools, losing key games onlynarrowly. Our Thirds and even Fourths are

often faced with SCTs from other schoolsin their competitions. This year again, they acquitted themselves very well, theFourths reaching the semi-final of the

Foster Cup. The Fifths and Social Teamhave also enjoyed their friendly andcompetitive games.

Brian Moore and Tony Leahy had fineteams at U 15 level; the JCT had asuccessful friendly season, defeating CUSwell in the Cup and losing narrowly andmemorably to Belvedere in injury time inthe quarter-final in what was judged thebest schools’ cup game of the season. The JLT qualified for the semi-final oftheir competition, losing to Blackrock.

Gareth Kelleher with Barry Leonardlooked after the U14s, who have steppedup considerably on their form of theprevious year. As usual, Mr Hughes andFr. McNulty, with a number of recentpast students, had most of First Year in agroup of four teams. The formidableUnder 13A team duly won the Provincial’sCup, reserving their best display for thefinal in defeating St. Michael’s (33-0).But the real success is the number ofplayers taking part in this age group.

Clongowes, 6-3.The first of our battles was a contest ofpure guts; neither team willing to backdown, no man capable of being beaten byhis opposite. Clongowes were alwaysgoing to be a tough team, they alwaysare. In fact some believed the St. Mary’sboys to be second best, but being theunderdog is something St. Mary’s thriveon. From the start the tackling was brutal. The game wasn’t very flowing andexciting, but the sheer physicality wasappreciated by the crowd. Clongowes tookthe lead after twenty minutes with apenalty. But luckily we had JonathanSexton who equalised in the thirty thirdminute, and then showed greatconcentration and coolness to get asecond penalty with two minutes to go tillfull time. The final score 3-6 to St. Mary’s.

C.B.C., 29-3.Most believed that this match would be a

given. But, as always with cup campaignsno one told the underdog, Despite whatthe score-line might suggest, C.B.C. didindeed put up a fight. However, despitesome mistakes, St. Mary’s proved topowerful, and put together some greatpieces of play.

Blackrock, 6-6.Our first encounter with Blackrock wasagain a tough match. It also hailed thereturn of one of our stand-out playersPhilip Brophy, who had been injured forsome time with a broken thumb. It wasfeared that Philip might miss the wholecup campaign, but thankfully he played inthe final three games. However, itappeared each side was evenly matched. Itcame down to Sexton’s skill again as hegot St. Mary’s only points of the game. But these six points were matched byRock. So there would be a rematch withinthe week.

Blackrock, the re-match, 7-3.Both teams still tired from their firstbattle walked back onto the pitch. Stillshowing the same hunger anddetermination that left their lastencounter at a stand off, but today onehad to be the victor. We took the leadafter 8 minutes, when Brophy now anintegral part of the team, took a sweetpass from Grissing to get over. Sexton asalways was cool and collected to take theconversion. Our pack and backs foughthard but were unable to punch any moreholes in the Rock’s defence. At the startof the second half Rock got a penaltywhich would make the score 7-3 till theend, despite the 6 extra minutes ofinjuries time. Sadly, the game wouldprove costly as one of our key andaggressive player Alex Hutchinson brokehis forearm, this would indeed prove abig loss to the team.

Terenure, 3-0.Unlike the previous year this St. Patrick’s

Day was absolutely scorching. This was tobe a very tight final. The two archenemies St. Mary’s and Nure meeting inthe final was sure to be a mouth-watering climax. More so than any othermatch of the campaign this was a battle. Both teams were driven by emotion andhunger alone. Neither team could breakthe other’s try-line. It should also benoted that no team throughout the wholecampaign got over our try-line. In fact, itwas a single penalty in the forty-fourthminute that would be the only score ofthe match and sadly it would be the threepoints that the cost St. Mary’s the cup.

It was a tough campaign for St. Mary’s.but in true St. Mary’s style all members ofthe squad showed outstanding qualitiesof dedication, determination and goodgamesmanship. All of the players shouldbe extremely proud of what they haveachieved for the school and forthemselves.

Schools Cup Final FunctionThe Function in the BerkleyCourt before the Schools CupFinal was something specialand achieved much by way ofmarketing the Union. It createda focal point prior to the game, offering a gathering place forthe myriad of St. Mary’ssupporters whether they be Past orPresent Pupils, their Parents, Membersof the Rugby Club or just simplyFriends of St. Mary’s. The only downside to the day was the result but Ithink you will all agree that Paul Nashand his team gave the 110% that wasasked of them.

Annual Union DinnerOur Annual Dinner took place on theevening of Friday the 15th of November2002 in the College Hall as is traditional.Once again, it was a thoroughlyenjoyable and most successful event. Two hundred and ten people in totaldined on the night. This year we had thenovelty of setting up a television andvideo link from the main hall into boththe Staff Room and Music Room toenable those seated adjacent to the hallto witness and hear the speeches at firsthand without having to move too farfrom their refreshments! The innovationworked extremely well and it was

particularly welcome for those ofthe members dining in theadjacent rooms. The highlightand feature of the dinner thisyear was the launch of ourUnion web site. The web sitewas copied onto a computerdisk and projected onto a screenmounted on the stage and the

sixth year class photos going backinto the mists of time were projected ona rotational basis onto the screen for allthose in attendance to view whiledining.

Junior FunctionThis year’s Junior Function took placein the Dropping Well in Milltown on27th December 2002. The event hasproven most popular for those whohave left school in the recent years.Just under ninety past students, all ofwhom left the school in the last fiveyears, were in attendance as were thePresident, a number of members of thePPU Committee and a smallrepresentation from the teaching staffof the school. It offers a greatopportunity for St. Mary’s boys, manyof whom had been abroad studying ortravelling, the chance to catch up oneach other’s whereabouts and activitiessince leaving the college, in a friendlyand relaxed atmosphere.

Lorcan Gogan Memorial DebateFor the second year running, theLorcan Gogan Memorial Debate washeld during school hours when teamsrepresenting the Past and Presentbattled it out for the honours. Themotion of the Debate this year, whichwas proposed by the College, was‘Taking Part is All That Matters’. TheCollege was very ably represented byRobert Stephenic (last year’s winner),Nial O’Briain, James Collins and CormacMurphy. The Past Team wasrepresented by Eamonn Ambrose,Ciaran Lennon, Sean Holland andStephen Blake. A very robust debatetook place with passions at timeshitting fever pitch! And when thedebate was finally over, and theChairman, John Gilsenan, put themotion to the floor for a show ofhands, the Past came out victorious! Areversal of fortune on last year! Tocomplete a very memorable afternoon,Barry Smith, as Adjudicator, awardedthe Lorcan Gogan Memorial Trophy toNial O’Briain, a very able debater fromthe College.

Membership RecordWe have a total of 1479 records on thecomputer database. Of this number wehave 553 e-mail addresses.

3rd Annual Union Business LunchThe 3rd Annual Union Business Lunchwas held on Friday the 23rd of May inthe Leinster Suite in the BurlingtonHotel. We were very lucky this year asour Guest Speaker was one of our veryown, Dr Pat Loughrey, the esteemedco-founder of Cuisine de France. DrLoughrey, speaking off the cuff, tookus through his own background inBachelors to the founding of Cuisine de

France. Particularly fascinating was thebackground to the acquisition of thecompany by IAWS plc which was clearlyan opportunistic move on the part ofDr Loughrey and his co-founders.Cuisine de France had very quicklyreached a juncture whereby the ownershad to choose between investingheavily to expand the company, on theone hand, or finding a suitor, on theother.

PPU Sports Day 2OO3For the first time in 8 years, the SoccerSports Day returned to the PPUcalendar. In what turned out to be aglorious sunny March day, I I teamstogged out in Kenilworth Square. The11 teams were divided into two groups. One for the younger lads and one forthe more mature and slightly heavierbreathers! The current champions fromthe year 1979 were back again to try toretain their trophy from 8 years ago.The winners and runners up weredivided into semi-finalists and the finalturned out to be a local derby as suchbetween 2000 and 1999! The year2000, under the captaincy ofCommittee member Michael Craig, came out on top of this re inventedSports day soccer blitz. They narrowlybeat the lads from 1999 by 4-3 in anerve-racking penalty shoot-out, as thetwo evenly matched teams were tied 1-1 after extra time in the final.

PPU Golf OutingThe PPU Golf Outing was held at theGrange Golf Club on 15th May 2003.With some late cry-offs we stillmanaged to get out approaching 60 onthe day. We have had better weatherdays but the scoring was as competitiveas ever. Prizewinners were:President’s Prize/Union Cup – Richard

St Vincent de PaulThe PPU has been supporting the St.Mary’s Conference of the Society of St.Vincent de Paul for two years now. Weas a society are hoping to establish adatabase of past pupils who may beprepared to get involved in anycapacity and at any level. Theconference throughout the year hasbeen involved in many activities fromvisiting residents of the FatimaMansions flats complex, to organisingthe annual children’s Christmas party atthe Women’s Shelter in Rathmineswhich neighbours the College. We stressthat we are not looking for financialsupport. What we seek is a commitmentof any amount of time you might bewilling to give, no matter how little, which would help us to see theseexisting projects grow.

ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ANNUAL 2003 63

Plant development in St. Mary’s Collegehas always been a work in progress. Atits foundation in 1890, there was thetask of converting a private residence,Larkhill, into a school for a hundred-plus boys. In subsequent decades andwith subsequent generations ofstudents, the College had to beextended and refurbished. Thiscontinued after the College was re-opened in 1926. Major classroomextensions were added in the early1940s, the Church was opened forworship in 1955, more Junior Schoolclassrooms and a small gym were builtin the mid 1960s, Senior classroomsand laboratories were added in 1989and 1995.

But there still remained what theDepartment of Education called anaccommodation deficit. The small 1966gym was particularly inadequate.Following discussion and consultation,in May 2000, Mr. Louis Burke(Architect) was approached with a briefto provide outline plans for a multi-purpose hall, together with an

extension to include a biologylaboratory, and further classroom space.

Preliminary outlines enabled Mr. FrankKeogh (Surveyor) to evaluate costings.A Project Committee, under thedynamic leadership of past-pupil DavidMoran, planned and initiated afundraising programme, with the adviceand direction of Brendan Phelan(Chapterhouse Consultants). Obviouslythe proper scheduling of the work wasof the greatest importance to ensurethat class disruption was kept to anabsolute minimum. OS ConstructionCompany won the contract and builderSean O’Shea co-operated excellentlywith the planning team and the Collegeadministration throughout the buildingprogramme.

On-site work began in June 2002, withthe demolition of the old gym and thelaying down of foundations for thenew hall, and subsequently thelaboratory-wing extension. It wasdecided at that time to transfer thekitchen/canteen to the new extension

to allow for proper administrationspace and a small study hall.

Thanks to the co-operation of the Armyauthorities, who again allowed specialaccess along the Military Road, buildingcontinued during the school year of2002-03 with little disruption tomatters academic. The Easter 2003deadline was met for the completion ofthe Hall, with its conference room,fitness-room, changing rooms andstorage/workshop amenities.

The biology-laboratory extension, together with the enlarged

kitchen/canteen, new entrance, connecting bridge etc. was completedsome months later.

It was decided to call the hall the FR.BARRY HALL. (Read again about Fr.Barry in the 2001 College Annual,pp.66ff.) Here was a man who firstcame to St. Mary’s in 1938, who taught brilliantly here for 45 years, who coached cricket and rugbyinternationals, who produced countlessdrama productions of the highestquality, who was the living spirit of the College for decades, who alwaysmaintained that nothing was too good

for the St. Mary’s family, for hisstudents.

In May 2003, Mass was the first eventin the new Hall - to thank God formaking this amenity possible, for itsplanning, its design, its construction, itsfinancing.

On that occasion, the College Presidentsaid:

In this Hall, we must build upcommunity as well as health, we mustbuild up wisdom and knowledge as wellas team-spirit. It is for leisure, endeavour and recreation, to bring ustogether, to encourage achievement. Itmust become a place where selfishness, bitterness, what is mean and petty haveno part.

Even costly buildings like these, are ofno value compared to the value of onehuman person, one student, oneteacher. We want to be more proud ofeach of you than we are of any hall orbuilding. By God’s goodness there is afine spirit in our College; be certainthat you will either build up that spiritor tear it down.

Today, you students become a specialpart of the College history. Rememberthat you were here the first day thisHall was used. And as you grow inrespect for everyone in this family of St.Mary’s, respect this new amenity too.As you become proud of it, continue torespect it also in your use of it.

Become involved in school life, buyinto your education, don’t stand on themargins of school life. Instead, takepart, give something back, helpsomeone else, be active doers and notjust passive takers only. Be fidelis inarduis.

Prayer of Blessing of new Hall and Extension(Fr. Palmer, Provincial – May 2004)

We ask God to bless us and our newHall and School extension. All praise to you, heavenly Father,Lord of all creation. You have gathered us together inthis community today to praise youby our words and works.

Bless + this hall and extension builtfor the education of our youngpeople.Bless + our students and teachers,Bless + our parents, our families, ouremployees and all who promoteChristian education in our society.

Bless your people + as they use thisrecreational facility; Bring your peace and joy into theirlivesAnd fill them with your happiness.May our students grow in wisdom, age and grace before you and allyour people.

May this College always be a homeof truth and wisdom, of faith andgood will towards all.

Through the prayers of St. Mary, your mother and our patroness, may this College help our society and build your kingdom of justice, love and peace.

Loving Father, listen to our prayer, which we offer through Christ ourLord, in your Holy Spirit.

All glory to you, one God, for everand ever. AMEN.
