Fr John Jolliffe’s Message
Dear parishioners of St. Mary Star of the Sea
At long last my very first visit to Gisborne. I am more than ready to join
you all in being the first in NZ to see the rising sun – when the Antarctic
weather passes. Meanwhile, thank you all for the very warm welcome.
While here on locum supply for Mons Frank, I very happily accept his
invitation to add value input to his faith development plan. Unfortunately
Covid-19 lockdown severely shortened my time here to only two weeks.
My first week was spent-+ in our two schools. I appreciate the warm
response to my sessions on “The life of a priest as a chaplain in
Antarctica.” A big thank you to staff and students of both Campion
College and St. Marys School for your invitation and receptiveness.
My second week focusses on the parish. Our original plan is now reduced
to only two topics. Each topic, is presented in the daytime and repeated in
the evening. Each session ends within the hour. The venue is the Parish
centre.
Topic 1. An overview of St Luke’s Gospel (focus, style, themes, purpose…
Wednesday 8th July, 10.15am – 11.15am. Repeated 7pm – 8pm.
Topic 2. Praying through stories by Jesus in Luke’s Gospel
(aligned to Ignatian Contemplation method).
Thursday 9th July, 2pm – 3pm. Repeated 7pm – 8pm.
The Thursday sessions replace the usual sessions by the Prayer Group
and the Scripture Study group.
The two topics are linked and it is best to attend both, but each topic
stands alone in that its worth attending even one if needing to miss the
other.
In these days of real and perceived changes in the Catholic Church it is
easy to forget the real core and true heart of the Church – the person of
Jesus Christ who loves us intimately, suffered and died for us, and rose
from the dead for our salvation so we can be with him forever. Jesus
gathered followers around him (the Church) for a mission of spreading the
Good News to the ends of the earth (including the South Pole !).

Theological college considers new Auckland home. This planet, our home, after Covid-19. The next issue of NZ Catholic will be published on July 12.
As one of our services to the parish, the ladies of the Catholic Women’s League will be serving your morning tea after all Wednesday morning Masses.

..……..We give witness to his message of hope, joy, mercy and for-
giveness. Praying the Gospels is a vital way to know and love Jesus as
our close friend, Saviour and God, the unshakeable foundation of our
lives. The Gospels are a readily accessible recourse for refreshing
guidance and prayer well into our future years. I invite you all to attend
this opportunity to nourish the solid foundation of our faith and lives
and to ensure experiencing a deeper inner
peace and joy. Fr John Jolliffe
