August 08, 2021

From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Mary of the Star Parishioners: As we continue the Month of August, there are a few beautiful Feasts in honor of Our Holy Blessed Mother. She is our Mother, our Guide, and Loyal intercessor before Her Beloved Son, Jesus. She is Mary Star of the Sea, guiding us all to the Heavenly Harbor. Below is a famous homily given by Saint Cyril of Alexandria on the occasion of Declaring Mary the Mother of God at the council of Ephesus. I hope you enjoy it. Have a Blessed week. Fr. Harrigan Pastor In praise of Mary, Mother of God I see here a joyful company of Christian men met together in ready response to the call of Mary, the holy and ever-virgin Mother of God. The great grief that weighed upon me is changed into joy by your presence, venerable Fathers. Now the beautiful saying of David the psalmist: How good and pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity has come true for us. Therefore, holy and incomprehensible Trinity, we salute you at whose summons we have come to-gether to this church of Mary, the Mother of God. Mary, Mother of God, we salute you. Precious vessel, worthy of the whole world’s reverence, you are an ever shining light, the crown of virginity, the symbol of orthodoxy, an indestructible temple, the place that held him whom no place can contain, mother and virgin. Because of you the holy gospels could say: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. We salute you, for in your holy womb he, who is beyond all limitation, was confined. Because of you the holy Trinity is glorified and adored; the cross is called precious and is venerated throughout the world; the heavens exult; the angels and archangels make merry; demons are put to flight; the devil that tempter, is thrust down from heaven; the fallen race of man is taken up on high; all creatures possessed by the madness of idolatry have attained knowledge of the truth; believers receive holy baptism; the oil of gladness is poured out; the Church is established throughout the world; pagans are brought to repentance. What more is there to say? Because of you the light of the only-begotten Son of God has shone up-on those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death; prophets pronounced the word of God; the apostles preached salvation to the Gentiles; the dead are raised to life, and kings rule by the power of the holy Trinity. Who can put Mary’s high honor into words? She is both mother and virgin. I am overwhelmed by the wonder of this miracle. Of course no one could be prevented from living in the house he had built for himself, yet who would invite mockery by asking his own servant to become his mother? Behold then the joy of the whole universe. Let the union of God and man in the Son of the Virgin Mary fill us with awe and adoration. Let us fear and worship the undivided Trinity as we sing the praise of the ever-virgin Mary, the holy temple of God, and of God himself, her Son and spotless Bridegroom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 34:2-9

R/.“Taste and see the goodness of the Lord”.

Second Reading Ephesians 4:30 – 5:2

Gospel Acclamation

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven, says the Lord; whoever eats

this bread will live forever”.

Gospel John 6: 41-51

Gospel John 6:41-51

The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven, ” and they said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

"For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned to-ward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy." -St. Therese of Lisieux (CCC 2558)

Psalm 27:7-9, 13-14 Hear, O Lord, the sound of my call; have pity on me, and answer me. Of you my heart speaks; you my glance seeks; your presence, O Lord, I seek. Hide not your face from me; do not in anger repel your servant. You are my helper: cast me not off; forsake me not, O God my savior. I be-lieve that I shall see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord.

Amen

Evangelio Juan 6: 41-51

August 7-8 DID YOU KNOW? The importance of being a good example Parents often have an easier time enforcing rules if they are setting good examples for their children. When it comes to drinking, drug use, and other risky behaviors, it is not always enough to tell your children these behaviors are forbidden. Parents should model the behavior they want to see. Drinking in moderation and abstaining from drug and nicotine teaches children about boundaries and responsible behaviors and reinforces the message that dangerous substances really are dangerous. For more information, request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Ten prevention practices you may not have considered,” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

“Familiarity may or may not breed contempt, but it does dispose people to cling to preconceived notions about a person and their authority. We

believe we have perfect understanding where we do not, and we resent it when people suggest that we may have missed out on something. We also put people in convenient categories rather than open our hearts to them and at least give them an opportunity to prove themselves. The relationships in Nazareth at that time may not have been closely familial, but this was a small community where everyone would have known each other pretty well at the very least. Jesus had come back to include his neighbors, friends, and family in the great gift of salvation, but they could not see past His previous station in the community in order to recognize that gift. How often do we do that ourselves — inside or outside of family and friends? Jesus offers us the “Bread of Life” “the living bread that came down from heaven,” and calls us to see each other in a new paradigm, as our brothers and sisters through our Father, and bring them into the body of Christ. We need to recognize and encounter that divine spark in each of us and find ways to reach that caritas rather than stick to our comfort zones and divisions. A prophet may be without honor in his own home town, but we are all pilgrims on the road to salvation. Let us honor each other as we go.

Dear Parishioners of Mary Star: Below is an ancient prayer to St. Joseph asking his protection and help in all our need. I encourage you to recite it each day in honor of this Year dedicated to St. Joseph. May God Reward You. Fr. Harrigan

Prayer to St. Joseph

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me all spiritual blessings through your Divine Son, Jesus, so that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me, and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, please pray for me. Amen.
