3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 26, 2020

Pastor’s Corner Greetings! “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” [Matthew 28.18-20] After all the years intervening from this great commission which the Risen Lord gave to the apostles in Galilee until here and now in Whitesville, Kentucky, we are still following Christ’s command. This is the charge given to the Church by which this parish church was established 175 years ago. It is the same charge for which the parish established parochial Catholic schools here 140 years ago. In acting to fulfill the command of our Lord, it is in our Catholic Schools of St. Mary and Trinity that we strive to continue the Gospel charge of teaching the observance of all that the Lord has commanded us. It is in the presence of our Catholic Schools that we see the Lord’s commission being honored and a promise being kept. Our commission as a parish church and our operation of very fine parochial Catholic schools in pursuit of the Gospel’s proclamation have a temporal foundation with potential for continued growth and service. The mission of Catholic schools such as ours is first of all to assist our Catholic parents in their living and sharing their faith with their children in the context of their children’s overall schooling (pre-K through 12th grade). In serving our families, each called to be a “domestic church” in itself, we are a community of families in faith and mission. This is all part of the Church’s responsibility of evangelization, the mission of the gospel itself. We can meet the spiritual and academic needs of our children. Catholic parents and families bear a responsibility before God to provide for the religious and for the overall education of their children. Parishes bear a parallel responsibility before God to assist them. The Catholic school is by most standards the most effective means of this assistance. As pastor of Saint Mary, I thank all our parish families who participate in our parish schools. It is my responsibility to ask all parishioners who could but do not participate, please, to reconsider how our schools might assist them in meeting their responsibilities before God. I likewise respect the decisions which our parents make in this regard. Secondly, the Gospel mission of our parish and schools is to offer the same education in the context of our Catholic Christian faith to other, non-Catholic families, most of whom are Christian. While we help the religious formation of Catholic children, we respect the religious positions and consciences of non-Catholic parents and their children even as they show their respect for our schools. All our teachers and the areas of study are committed to academic integrity. Our instructional programs are presented and taught objectively and authentically. We trust how the light and the moral values of the gospel will shine throughout the curriculum. God’s grace, truth, and light all work toward the fulfillment and the freedom of the human person. Thirdly, the entire community is to be blessed by the presence of our church and our parish schools through the light of the truth and the goodness of the values which we teach and for which we stand. We are far from perfect, being sinners all, but we depend upon the grace and mercy offered us in Jesus Christ and we strive to be witnesses of the power of the reconciliation which our Lord offers. This work will not be accomplished by merely human means. God must provide. I invite all to participate in this effort commanded by the Risen Christ as we move forward in faith with our Catholic schools. May the Lord who has begun this good work in and among us bring it to completion. Amen. I’m looking forward to our celebration of Catholic Schools Week! Peace, joy and love, Fr. Brian J. Roby

School Happenings Help needed! Hey, everyone! Trinity High School will be hosting the regional wrestling tournament on February 7 & 8. We only have two wrestlers this year, so we are short on the help we need to take care of all the work that goes into such a big tournament. There are several ways you can help. 1. Bring in items (soups / pot luck dishes / finger foods) for the hospitality room on Saturday

the 8th. 2. Volunteer to help with parking. 3. Volunteer for a two- or three-hour shift in the concession stand or hospitality room. 4. Volunteer to man the grill. 5. Volunteer to work the gate on one of the dates (sell tickets or work the doors once the gate

closes). Gate open at 4:30 on Friday and 8:00 or 8:30 on Saturday. If you're willing to help in any of these capacities, please contact Christina Rhodes at the

school 270-233-5533 or [email protected]. Let her know how you can contribute. Ex: I will bring in a crock pot of chili on Saturday and work a two-hour shift in concession; just let me know what time you need me. Or: I will work in the hospitality room on Friday night and bring in chicken fingers for the hospitality room on Saturday. Wherever you can help, you will be appreciated! Thank you, in advance, for helping us host a wonderful tournament! We get so many compliments on our building, our food, and our people! Christina Rhodes, Athletic Director

Men’s Group Relaunching! You and I know that we are made for more; for glory, and that God has a mission for our lives. With the constant demands of the world, responsibilities of life and never ending distractions, it is easy for that call to glory to be snuffed out. Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so man sharpens his fellow man.” Next meeting is February 19th from 7:30 till 9 PM. The Men’s Group meets on the third Wednesday of every month at the KC Hall (7812 Hayes Station Road.) This group is open to ALL men of our community.

3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 26, 2020

Greetings from Joe Bland

Drop You Nets and Come After Me

A couple of weeks ago Fr. Brian asked the question; “Can you be a Christian and a non-disciple of Jesus?” Sadly, the answer is yes. It pains me to say that in many churches in many pews there are people that have gone to church their whole life maybe even attended Catholic Schools and are still not a disciple of Jesus. Some national studies have said that as many as 85% of the people sitting in our pews today across the nation have never been evangelized or made a conscious decision to follow Jesus. They have been catechized (taught the faith) and they have the head knowledge of Jesus, but they have never had an encounter with Jesus the risen Lord. They have not made that journey from the head to the heart. These people may even receive the Eucharist and other Sacraments and still not have a relationship with Him. There is an old proverb that says; “Whatever is received is received according to the manner of the receiver.” Or from another proverb: “We receive things not as they are but as we are.” Only the Lord knows what that percentage is for St. Mary of the Woods. The way you judge the success of a parish and their evangelization efforts is the making of disciples.

In the Gospel today Jesus says to Peter and Andrew, “Come after Me.” It’s as if Jesus is walking in another direction and he is telling them to turn around and come after him in a whole new direction. They were the people that were sitting in darkness awaiting the Messiah. We call this metanoia or conversion or literally “turning around”. This was their “drop the nets” moment in their life. One could say this is when everything made sense and they “woke up”. St. Paul says in the letter to the Ephesians 5:14; “Awake O sleeper and rise from the dead and Christ will give you light.”

My question to you today is; “Have you had that encounter with Jesus, have you had that drop your nets moment where you said I’m all in for Jesus?” If you have, I would love to hear that story, someone out there needs to hear your story. My next question is; “If you haven’t had that moment – and it’s okay if you haven’t – would you like to have that moment?” It’s never too late to be all in for Jesus. We are here to help you with that. If you would like to learn more about how to become a disciple of Jesus, I would be glad to help you. Let’s take this parish from a really good parish to an extremely GREAT parish.

Blessings, Joe Bland

Young Adult Discipleship Groups We all long to be known, to be supported, to have an identity. Having authentic community requires those who have encountered

Jesus to drop their nets and eagerly accept His invitation to follow Him. The Young Adults from St Mary of the Woods desire to take this next step and begin creating spaces for intentional communities to form in order for the young adults in this area to grow deeper in our faith and personal relationships. We are excited to partner with ID 9:16 (www.id916.com) this year to help us accomplish that goal. ID 9:16’s mission is to form Young Adult’s into intentional disciples of Jesus by giving them the tools to build, maintain and grow a young adult community. The goal is NOT separate Young Adults from their parish, but to foster an environment of growth and formation that will empower them to be become more active in their parish community. During Lent we will form “Discipleship Groups ”will be small group faith communities who aim to gather twice a month to share life together. This will be a time to grow personally and share your story, struggles and triumphs with other young adults. Each group will also engage a video series on Discipleship to help them begin conversations about what it means to follow Jesus, how to live a life of Discipleship and all the struggles and questions these topics give rise to. These groups are open to all Young Adults–no matter where you are at in your faith life. Will meet whenever and however; customizable for each group. If you are interested in being a part of a Discipleship Group, please contact [email protected].

BULLETIN BITES “Come after me and I will make you

fishers of men.” The Deadliest Catch is a popular “reality” program. It features the men who fish for crabs in the frigid waters of the Bering Sea. The rough seas, cold weather and heavy equipment can be dangerous, and sometimes deadly. Fishing on the Sea of Galilee may not be as deadly but it was difficult and demanding. It may be understandable that when Jesus called Simon (called Peter), Andrew, James and John to leave their nets and become “fishers of men” they jumped at the chance. But they actually did not give up one to accept the other. They continued their livelihood of fishing the sea as they followed Jesus and learned from his words and example how to lead others to a greater awareness of the love of a great and generous God - to be “fishers of men.” Through his call to Peter and the others Jesus calls us to learn from him to use all of the talents, abilities and gifts God has given us to be “fishers of men” - to lead others to Him. In many ways that can be more challenging than fishing for crabs in the Bering Sea.

Parish Grief Ministry Our Parish Grief Ministry will facilitate a once a month gathering on Sat mornings. The sessions will be directed by Martha Crabtree, a retired Counselor, who is from our parish. You may RSVP by calling the parish office at 270-233-4196.

Sunday Connection Today’s Gospel describes the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke (called the Synoptic Gospels), Jesus’ public ministry begins after his baptism by John the Baptist and after his retreat to the desert where he was tempted by the devil. When Jesus returns from the desert, he hears that John has been arrested.

The first part of today’s Gospel places Jesus’ ministry in the context of the writings of the prophet, Isaiah. Matthew wants to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies given to the people of Israel, and he refers to Isaiah to do so. Isaiah says that the Messiah will begin his ministry in Galilee, the land of the Gentiles. When Jesus begins to preach in Galilee, Matthew points to his ministry as a fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, proof that Jesus is the Messiah.

When Jesus called his first disciples, the Gospel tells us that the fishermen (Peter and Andrew, James and John) dropped everything to follow Jesus immediately. Yet this Gospel tells us little about the prior experience that the fishermen had of Jesus. Did they know him? Had they heard him preach? What kind of person must Jesus have been to invoke such a response? We can imagine that Jesus was a powerful presence to elicit a response as immediate and complete as these first disciples gave.

The Gospel concludes with a description of the ministry that Jesus begins in Galilee. Jesus inaugurates the Kingdom of God with his work. He teaches in the synagogue and preaches the kingdom. His ability to cure people’s diseases and illness is a sign of the kingdom. In Jesus’ ministry, we already begin to see the Kingdom of God among us.
