Pastor’s Corner There are some events that we would give anything to attend. Who would not want to go to a presidential inaugural ball, the world series, the super bowl, or the installation of a pope? These are momentous occasions and invitations to them are hard to come by. For some of these events, the tickets are costly. For others, you have to be in the loop, you have to have connections. This week, we celebrate the most important event to which we will be invited, the great gathering of the Saints in heaven- more prestigious than any public event on earth. The invitation to this event has been extended to all women and men from every nation, race, people, and tongue. What kind of ticket does one need in order to get in? One must be marked with the blood of the Lamb. 144,000 is twelve squared multiplied by a thousand indicating completeness, indicating that the number of those saved is impossible to count. The gathering takes place at the throne of God in the presence of the Lamb that was slain and is now glorified. The celebration is one of praise of God, much grander than any ball, more electrifying by victory than any game, and more majestic than any installation.

All are invited but few are chosen? Eligibility for access to God- the psalm says “one whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain.” So everyone can choose to be in the loop, to have a connection as long as we are willing to possess the right disposition. The Beatitudes express the disposition necessary for access to God: to be poor in spirit- a life that depends completely on God; to be pure of heart- full of grace; to be humble; to be merciful; to hunger and thirst for righteousness, for holiness; to work for peace; to dare to love. Those who live in this way have access to God. They make up the multitudes who stand before the throne and before the Lamb. These are the Saints of God.

We all know people who are living examples of this kind of holiness: The ones who stand tall in times of crisis; the ones who step forward in times of need; men of women of principle; members of our families, neighbors among whom we live. They are generous with their time, talent, and treasure. They are patient and kind; they are understanding and forgiving. There is seldom fanfare when they practice virtue, but their virtue leaves its mark on the lives of those whom they touch. The Saints! This is the multitude among whom we want to be numbered. This is the celebration to which we have been invited. Do we accept the invitation? If so, let’s make sure, on a daily basis, that we possess the right disposition.

Please be reminded that we have a Holy Day of Obligation this week, Friday, Nov. 1st, the Solemnity of All Saints- Vigil, Thurs., Oct. 31st at 6pm; Day, Friday, Nov. 1 at 8am, 12:10pm, and 6pm.

All Souls Day, Saturday Nov. 2nd, is a holy day set aside for honoring the dead. The Roman Catholic celebration is associated with the doctrine that the souls of the faithful who at death have not been cleansed from the temporal punishment due to venial sins and from attachment to mortal sins cannot immediately attain the beatific vision in heaven, and that they may be helped to do so by prayer and by the sacrifice of the Mass.

Mass for the day- 8am; Memorial Service at St. Mary Cemetery- 12 Noon Peace, joy and love, Fr. Brian J. Roby In preparation for November, the Month of Remembrance… We are collecting framed photographs of deceased loved ones to display in the Church, during November, for the Month of Remembrance. You may drop off your framed photographs at the office or give them to Fr. Brian before or after Mass in the Sacristy of the Church. We would like to have these framed photographs no later than Tuesday, Oct. 29th by 4pm in preparation for set-up.

Sunday Connection The second parable that Jesus tells in Luke 18 addresses attitude in prayer. In contrasting the prayer of the Pharisee with the prayer of the tax collector, Jesus teaches his disciples to pray in humility before God. Jesus again surprises his listeners by showing the tax collector as the example of faith, rather than the Pharisee. Remember that Pharisees were members of a sect of Judaism active in Jesus' time. They taught an oral interpretation of the Law of Moses as the basis for Jewish piety. If anyone would be a model for prayer, a Pharisee was a likely candidate. In contrast, Jesus offers the tax collector as a model for prayer. Tax collectors were collaborators with the Roman authorities in a system that allowed the tax collectors to line their own pockets by charging in excess of the defined taxes. Yet, in this parable, Jesus offers the humility of the tax collector as a model for the prayer of a disciple. The parable reminds us that when we pray, we must remember our need for God in our lives. If we are too full of ourselves, there is too little room for God's grace to work in us.

BULLETIN BITES “Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.”

The two men did not go into the temple because only priest could go into the temple, and only at certain times of the year. The two men clearly had different attitudes about praying and holiness. The Pharisee studied every word of the law and the prophets, and he observed every minute detail. That was his idea of holiness. And he was in the temple area to brag to God about how well he was doing. And he wanted others to see him in the temple area. To him, holiness was observing every minute detail of the law, even if doing so meant he ignored the needs of neighbor and did not love them as he loved himself. The other man was a hated tax collector. He did not have time to learn every letter of the law, and probably did not want to. He knew he was not perfect and was aware of his offenses against God. Jesus tells us that the tax collector, who humbled himself before God, went home justified, but not the Pharisee, who had exalted himself before others. Jesus is challenging us to consider why we pray, out of pride or humility?
