“Let Us Go Rejoicing to the House of the Lord”“Let Us Go Rejoicing to the House of the Lord”“Let Us Go Rejoicing to the House of the Lord”“Let Us Go Rejoicing to the House of the Lord”

On Thursday our nation celebrated Thanksgiving Day. People gathered in the Church, before joining the families and friends, thanked the good Lord for his benevolent blessing bestowed on this great country. We pray that the Lord will continue to protect this nation for the future generations. May God grant wisdom to the elected leaders to guide this nation to its Christian principles and values. The leaders of this nation remember that they have to give an account of their actions to God. May they God to its cen-tral place. This week begins the liturgical celebration of Advent. Advent means coming. Who is coming? It is Jesus who is coming. How can we celebrate Christmas without Jesus. This first Sunday the readings are filled with hope and expectation. The readings invite us to look forward to Jesus coming. It will be a time of peace and awaking. The first reading speaks of, “Now is the hour to awake from sleep.” The Gospel is taken from St. Matthew. It speaks of, “The Son of Man will come at an hour you least expect.” What does this state-ment mean? If you go a little further it speaks of the time of Noah. What is the story of Noah? This time was a terrible time for hu-manity. People are given into all kinds of things which are contrary to the commandments of God. The commandments bound the people to a covenant with God and Israel. This covenant meant that God is their God and the people are his people. Many people broke this covenant by moving away from God and his command-ments. God sent a prophet to warn the people of their sinfulness and asking them to change their way of living. They refused the warn-ing of the prophet. There was a good man named Noah. He heard the warning of the prophet of impending peril which was awaiting them if they did not change. But Noah listened to the prophet and he wanted to save his family. In order to save the family he needed a boat to escape the flood which was going to come. People ridiculed Noah and his family as he was building the boat. They laughed at him and his family. But they did not pay attention to them. They paid attention to God’s prophet. Because of this, they were saved from the flood. The others were lost. The Lord keeps telling us in the Holy book that he will come when we least expect him. Why does he want us to be in sus-pense? We have seen and heard from false prophets who some-how fixed a date for God’s coming. It never happened. Why at times do we follow such false prophets? Is it because our faith is weak? The Lord will say “Yes”. We, instead of following Jesus, follow human beings who pretend to be God’s messengers. They are truly thieves. Let us not be worried about when the day is go-ing to be. Let us live our daily lives following the footsteps of our fathers in faith and follow the calling of the Church. She calls us to, “Be prepared always for the Lord’s coming.” In the beginning of this Gospel, St. Matthew repeats what we heard last Sunday from the Gospel of Luke. The nations will rise against nations, there will be lots of earthquake and famine will spread, but the end is not yet. What Matthew tells us today is, “Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal; one will be taken and one will be left.” The Gospel speaks to us about ordinary things the ordinary people are doing in their daily lives. There is nothing ex-traordinary happening as it happened at the time of Noah. Why then does the Gospel say that one is taken and the other is left? Is it because the one, who was left, has already left the Lord and the Church? Fr. JohnFr. JohnFr. JohnFr. John
