Church Support Apr 10 - 11
Just a bit from Fr. Schmidt One with Our Ancestors in the Faith
A few years back, I went on a mission trip with a group of college students and FOCUS missionaries (Fellowship of Catholic University Students). We went to a small town near San Luis Potosí in Mexico. Throughout that week, I had the opportunity to celebrate Mass—even to attempt to proclaim the Gospel—in Spanish. However, most of the stu-dents along on the mission trip did not speak Spanish.
It would have made more sense for me to just celebrate Mass in Latin, since Catholics of every language group are supposed to have a familiarity with that. I believe we did at least use the Latin Mass parts like the Sanctus and Agnus Dei. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal mentions this rationale in paragraph 41: “Since the faithful from different countries come together ever more frequently, it is desirable that they know how to sing together at least some parts of the Ordinary of the Mass in Latin, especially the Profession of Faith and the Lord’s Prayer, according to the simpler settings.”
Even beyond uniting Catholics across the world from different language groups, Latin also unites us to other Catho-lics across time. It’s quite amazing to know that St. Augustine in the fourth century in North Africa, St. Anthony of Padua in the 13th century in Portugal and Italy, and Blessed Miguel Pro in the 20th century in Mexico all prayed most of the very same words of the Mass and the Psalms and many other prayers. Even though you might have a hard time understanding much even of English as it was spoken just a few hundred years ago, Latin has not changed much at all in these 2000 years of the Church’s history.
The other thing that unites us to our ancestors in the faith is the rich devotional life of the Church. Next Sunday, April 25, was traditionally held as the Major Rogation Day (from the Latin rogare, “to ask, beg, pray”). Even from the first centuries of Christianity, processions, penance, and prayers were offered on this day especially to beg God’s blessing and protection upon their fields and flocks. As such, we’ll be having a procession around the church block in each parish as we sing the Litany of Saints and rogation prayers next Sunday. We’ll plan on 11:00 am in Bowdle, just after the morning Mass for anyone willing to stick around, and 7:00 pm in Hoven.
Word of Life “Christ invites us to trust in his invisible grace that prompts us to the gen-
erosity of supernatural charity, as we iden$fy with everyone who is ill:
‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of
mine, you did for me’ (Mt 25:40).”
