SCHEDULE The fourth Sunday in December is Advent and also
the 24th of December, Christmas Eve. The fourth Sunday of Advent will be celebrated at
the 8am, 10am and 12 noon Mass. Christmas Eve will be celebrated 4pm, 6pm, 8pm, and midnight
Christmas Day Mass will be 10am and 12 noon.
December 31st Mass will be 8am, 10am and 12 noon. New Years Eve at 9pm
and New Years Day at 12 noon.
RECEPTION OF
HOLY COMMUNION Reception of Holy Communion at Mass is available for Catholics, who are in union with the Pope, not
conscious of grave sin, and normally, have fasted for one hour. Let us all pray for union with the Lord
Jesus, that the Holy Spirit will dispel the sad divisions which separate Christians, and for the
peace and unity of the whole human family.

memory/honor of your loved ones.

The True Spirit of Christmas Christmas is one of the most soulful days of the year. You don’t need to be Christian or a follower of Jesus,
because the roots of Christmas lie in the natural rhythms of the year, and solstice celebrations are universal. Christmas is a solstice festival with a significant overlay of the story and teachings of Jesus. But his teaching is universal and dovetails
beautifully with the spirit of solstice. Jesus offers a vision of utopia, a perfected world. He envisioned a
time when we would get over our neuroses, our demonic tendencies, and live in peaceful
community.
FEATURED MINISTRY Living Waters Bible Study
From its simple origin, rooted in song and prayer, to its call to disciple people with the Word of God, the “Living Waters Bible Study: has unified its members
as “One Body of Christ” not only to study God’s Word but to serve: to distribute bibles to new families in the church community, to provide
needed items to Gower Place residents, and to hold anointing services. When Father Leander
Hartdegen (parish priest from 1958 to 1970) envisioned “The Living Waters Prayer Group” with Mrs. Mildred Dillard, wife of Deacon Henry Dillard,
little did he know that fellowship among friends would become a 21 year dedication to the study of
God’s Word. From 1994 onward, under the guidance of teacher Nicky Jones, the Living Waters Bible Study has completed 16 Old Testament books
and 25 New Testament books. Even more, it has united individuals from up to seven different
denominations to study as one. Second Timothy 2:15 states, “Diligently present ourselves approved to
God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, right dividing the Word of Truth.” Every Tuesday
night from 6:30 to 8pm, the Bible Study invites all to come to the Living Waters. Call for location.

Lord, in this holy season of prayer and song and laughter,
we praise you for the great wonders you have sent us:
for shining star and angel's song, for infant's cry in lowly manger.
We praise you for the Word made flesh in a little Child.
We behold his glory, and are bathed in its radiance.
Be with us as we sing the ironies of Christmas, the incomprehensible comprehended,
the poetry made hard fact, the helpless Babe who cracks the world asunder.
We kneel before you shepherds, innkeepers, wisemen.
Help us to rise bigger than we are. Amen.
LOOK FOR A JOYFUL PEACE
Have you ever been surrounded by a whirlwind of activity, perhaps in the midst of family and friends,
and felt a sudden whoosh of deep contentment? This is what Pope Francis refers to as a “joyful
peace.” It’s the swirling flow of a dance, the soaring notes of a symphony. Too often when we imagine
peace, we think that it needs to be perfect stillness. When we reflect on the life of Jesus in the Gospels,
we realize he was almost always in motion: walking, preaching, teaching, healing, eating, and drinking. Even when he went off to deserted places to pray, one imagines that he was in an active communion

GOSPEL NOTES Fourth Sunday of Advent
You are in on the greatest secret of all time! A mystery hidden for many ages! What is this secret, this mystery?
According to St. Paul, writing to the Romans in today’s second reading, it’s the gospel Paul preaches,
the revelation of Jesus Christ. The Romans, along with Paul’s Jewish kinfolk and
the rest of the world, are now in on this revelation—as we are today. Our other two readings, spanning
the Old and New Testaments, give us that revelation, as God first makes a promise,
then fulfills it. From the Hebrew Scriptures, we hear the promise
made by God to King David. With one of the Bible’s great puns, God takes David’s offer to build an
earthly “house”–a temple for God to live in– and turns it around. God instead, will build a “house” for
David–a family dynasty which will last forever. The promise comes true in the Gospel story of the
Annunciation. The child who will be born of Mary of Nazareth will be the heir of David. In Jesus Christ
the “house” of David continues, and God will dwell forever with the human family. We twenty-first century Christians are so often caught up in our
contemporary reality, and the very real and often-troubling history unfolding around us, that we can
forget that God has intervened in that history. Let’s allow that staggering revelation
to catch us up and give us hope.

SAINT OF THE WEEK The Story of the Solemnity of the Nativity
of the Lord On this day, the Church focuses especially on the
newborn Child, God become human, who embodies for us all the hope and peace we seek. We need no other special saint today to lead us to Christ in the
manger, although his mother Mary and Joseph, caring for his foster-son, help round out the scene.
But if we were to select a patron for today, perhaps it might be appropriate for us to imagine an
anonymous shepherd, summoned to the birthplace by a wondrous and even disturbing vision in the
night, a summons from an angelic choir, promising peace and goodwill. A shepherd willing to seek out something that might just be too unbelievable to chase after, and yet compelling enough to leave behind the flocks in the field and search for a
mystery. On the day of the Lord’s birth, let’s let an unnamed, “non-celebrity” at the edge of the crowd model for us the way to discover Christ in our own hearts—
somewhere between skepticism and wonder, between mystery and faith. And like Mary and the
shepherds, let’s treasure that discovery in our hearts.
REFLECTION The precise dating in the Scripture readings for
today sounds like a textbook on creationism. If we focus on the time frame, however, we miss the
point. It lays out the story of a love affair: creation, the deliverance of the Hebrews from slavery in
Egypt, the rise of Israel under David. It climaxes with the birth of Jesus. Some scholars insist that
from the beginning God intended to enter the world as one of us, the beloved people. Praise God!
