Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 5, 2018

I liked this story I read recently, “Charles Schwab, former president of U.S. Steel, had a mill manager whose men were not producing their quota of work. ‘How is it,’ Schwab asked, ‘that a man as capable as you

cannot make this shift turn out its quota?’

‘I don’t know,’ the manager replied. ‘I have coaxed the men, pushed them, but nothing seems to work. They just will not produce.’

It happened to be the end of the shift, just before the night shift came on. ‘Give me a piece of chalk,’ Schwab said. Then, turning to the nearest worker, he inquired, ‘How many turns of the furnace did your shift produce today?’

‘Six,’ he said.

Without another word Schwab chalked a big figure 6 on the floor, and he walked away.

When the night shift came in, they saw the big 6 and asked what it meant. ‘The boss was here today,’ the day shift said. ‘He asked us how many turns we made, and chalked it on the floor.’

The night crew grumbled among themselves, ‘Those lazy louts on the day shift. Six turns of the furnace? We’ll show them!’

The next morning Schwab walked through the mill again and noticed that the night shift had rubbed out the 6 and replaced it with a big 7. The day shift couldn’t believe those buffoons from the night shift could work that much. So they went about production determined to show the night shift that their work was not that remarkable. When the day shift went home that night they left behind an impressive 10. Shortly, the mill which had been lagging way behind in production was turning out more work than any other company plant.

Without yelling a word or making any threats Schwab had made his point. He said, ‘The way to get things done is to stimulate competition. I don’t mean in a sordid, money-getting way, but in the desire to excel.’”

In today’s second reading St. Paul puts it this way, “I declare and testify in the Lord that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds, that is not how you learned Christ,” but, “be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God’s way in righteousness and holiness of truth.”

In the Gospel Jesus puts it thus, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the One he sent.”

We know that this belief goes far beyond mere words. Our faith, hope and love is to penetrate every aspect of our life and our goal should be to excel in our efforts. Charles Schwab encouraged excellence by using a piece of chalk. Jesus Christ does so by offering us the Bread of Life, “the food that endures for eternal life.”

Of course, Christ offers more than that, even to the point of offering his life on a cross. Surely, that should be enough to motivate us to excel in every part of our faith.

I will be leaving this afternoon for a Trappistine monastery in Iowa, where I will spend the week on retreat. Please pray for my safe travel. Know that I will be praying for you, especially at the altar of God. God bless you always. Father Hambrough

Please note that from Monday, August 6 until Friday, August 10, inclusive, we will have only a 6:30 am Mass. Mass

at 8:00 am will be offered on Saturday, the 11th.

There is an 8:00 am Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. John Paul II (St. George) and an 8:15 am Mass at St. Simon church.

Note, too, that there will not be Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesday, August 7.

Adoration will resume on August 13.

The Gospel tells us, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” By “listening” we are able to live the gospel. Gospel living is something so simple as taking the time to listen to those who need to

spill out their hearts when seeking help. Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you enable the members of the Society to become a “listening heart” to the hungry, the homeless and the struggling poor.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Standing Out—One of the challenges we face in evangelization is connecting with the culture in order to penetrate it and refine it with Gospel values. Many people have fallen prey to the culture in this process and have forgotten their goal. As Christians, we should stand out, especially in the hyper-secularized culture in which we find ourselves in the Western world in 2018. It is important for us to consider where we have come from and where we are going as disciples of Jesus Christ. Paul reminds us in his letter to the Ephesians that we must put away the old self and not live as the Gentiles do. We can certainly meet others on their terms, but we must avoid the trap of forgetting that our task is to help lead them away from a dull and sterile existence, consumed by evanescent pleasures. As baptized Christians, we are called to lead new and transformed lives in the power of the Holy Spirit. Let’s stand out! We do not need to be pompous or attention-seeking, but authentic Christians will be recognized as different in this world. ~archstl.org/dynamic

Widow / Widower’s Support Group—These meetings are held at St. Simon the Apostle Church in the Lower Church Hall in the 'Mary Room'. Our next scheduled

Have you been Baptized but have not received First Holy Communion

or been Confirmed?

Looking for Help!

This is an invitation for 5 or 6 women of the parish who would be interested in getting our cafeteria kitchen in tip-top shape on Thursday, August 9 beginning at 9:00 am for the start of the school year. The floors have been stripped and waxed and closets have been cleaned out. We are now looking for people to wipe down the cabinets, wash dishes and label areas so that everything has a “home”. We would like the kitchen to be in order for the start of school and our Fall Festival. All cleaning supplies will be provided. Please let Diane Little (743-8602) know if you are interested in helping out.

Do you have a copy of the book The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic? Can you pass it along to others who have not read the book? If your answer to these two questions is "yes," please consider donating your book to St. Mark Parish, so, that they may be distributed to other

parishioners. Place your book in the bin in the cry room.

For more information about the book study contact Christina Sanders at 314.743.8604 or

[email protected].
